How is it they find money to hire cops, and not firefighters? Is it because of grants? Or MVPD is even more shorthanded then MVFD?

MOUNT VERNON — Eighteen new city police recruits began their training recently at the Westchester County training facility.

Or does it have to do with a clause in the city charter that limits the size of the FD but not the PD?

10 of the new hires are off of a federal grant, the other 8 are to fill vacanies. One of the stipulations of the grant is that staffing levels must remain the same for the life of the grant, which is three years.

Is there a clause? Why would it limit the size of the FD? (Just curious- is it an antiquated charter?). Is that something that can be changed?

So, if the funding for the grant runs out, does that mean these officers could be out of a job in three years? (given there aren't any vacancies, etc)

In three years they could, but with the turnover rate in Mount Vernon there are bound to be at least 50 people below them in seniority.
