Seagrave Awarded Bid For New FDNY Field Com Units?

15 posts in this topic

I've heard through various sources that Seagrave had been awarded the bid for 4 new Field Com units.

Does anyone know anything more? What kind of chasis will they be on?

I don't believe I've seen or heard of Seagrave building something like a Field Com, which is a complicated thing different then the ordinary fire truck or engine.

Thanks guys for the info.

It's interesting to see them putting it on a Marauder II chassis, definitely a departure from the Freightliner and Mack MR of previous generations. To my knowledge, Seagrave really hasn't built many of these type of units with the complexity of the interior?

BTW, who staffs the Field Coms, and where are they quartered?

3 million for one truck. WOW

Most likely Seagrave will build the body and sends it to another company for installation of the interior. Depending on what communications/electronics equipment is specified, the 3 mil price tag may not be far off.

3.4 million for one vehicle? No way! Aerialscopes are only 1.2. It has to be for more than one vehicle.

Well, the city has 2 mobile command centers which were donated by the Dennis Leary foundation. They are mobile home style rigs. Then there is the command tactical rig which is housed at metrotech. And FINALLYthe field comm rig, which as previously stated is housed in Brooklyn, and there is only one field comm. Excluding a spare. So unless the fdny is creating new field comm units ie/ one in each borough, then that is the price of a new one.

233 276 all the same nonsense lol And the MCC 2 was donated by the old Bronx Boro President and is ironically housed in Manhattan.

My bad brother, I know one of the mcc's were donated by Dennis Leary, I assumed both. Thanks for correcting that.

You'd be amazed how quick the cost adds up when dealing with communications related equipment and the installation of same. Especially if it is being designed for interoperability with other agencies whom all have different comm equipment.

I'd like to see this thing in person when it's done - being the comm geek that I am.

I have seen single COMMAND units from SVI, Pierce, ETC cost easily 4m. There are "Tellular" networks, mobile repeater, microwave comm, extensive mobile and portable equipment, various cameras - fixed and mobile, and the list goes on. It will be impressive to say the least. The cost does not come from the steel and wheels as much, as it is the technology inside of the box. As we all know, MOTOROLA is not a cheap word.
