High-rise growth creates firefighter challenges

2 posts in this topic

Great article shared by a friend. About the growth in Charlotte NC, but kind of applicable to White Plains and New Rochelle.

Towering above Charlotte’s recent apartment boom are several high-rise projects in or near uptown that mark a rebounding economy and a desire by young professionals to live in the center city. But with the growth, firefighters see challenges.

New Ro and White Plains put a lot of planning and consideration into the safety of the high rises in their districts, However things happen and my favorite saying is " If things didn't happen that couldn't happen I would not have had a job "

Despite safeguards things happen, sprinkler failures, black outs. fire pump problems, explosions, high winids and remember the former Yankee pitcher learning to fly an airplane all of these things are unexpected and are just a couple that come to mind that could negate all the best plans, That is why a prepared fire department is paramount.

As 635 points out these structures exist here and both fore mentioned Departments would be hard pressed to place 30 men on the scene in a timely fashion, while the same fire in NYC would put about 164 members on the fire at it's onset, when first declared a high rise fire(1077),

These building would be a tough mutual aid problem .
