And if you decide to take mass transit (specifically Metro North) please try to behave yourselves as there will be enough amateurs on the trains! St Patty's Day is the one day of the year that I absolutely HATE going to work.

I don't have my contract IFO me, so I will do this from my memory, which has a high failure rate. IF you do at least 24 hours a week in dispatch, you get an about $2.50/hour above what an EMT with the same credentials/Hx would make. Your other hours would be worked on the street. IF you work LESS then 24 hrs a week inside, you only get the extra money for hours actually spent dispatching. Empress sends you to the EMS class.
There is an established system for counting previous years as a paid staff and/or volly, something like 2 or 3 years in another place earns you a one year grade increase at Emnpress. Again, it is in the contract so everyone gets the same deal.
So let's say a new EMT starts at $10.50. Then about $12 after probation, then the $2.50, plus maybe a $1/hr or so for previous experience if you can document/prove it= about $15/hour, plus the benefits, and about a 3% raise, give or take based on what contract is in effect.
I gotta say, it is a VERY demanding job, and most of our dispatchers are VERY GOOD at it.

    http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2012/02/03/nyc-fire-union-looks-to-speaker-quinn-to-block-fdny-closures/
A few days ago the mayor released his fiscal plan for the next few years. In it he included $50 million budget cut for FDNY. The only way they're cutting $50 million is to close houses. For anyone watching the past few years this should sound familiar. He will soon begin ramping up the media support for firehouse closures. In 2 to 3 months a revised budget will come in with an unexpected surplus from increased revenues in yadda yadda yadda. He will still push for the cuts because they are necessary to maintain a balanced budget in the near future. Come June he will submit his budget including the company closures to the city council. A few weeks of political wrangling later, the city council will approve a budget with funding restored for the firehouses. Bloomy gets to come away looking tough on those fat cat firefighters and public servants while the damn liberals in the city council continues to undo his hard work.
I am sick of this BS. I'm tired of giving up sunny afternoons for another rally at city hall. I'm tired of sitting in on long boring city council meetings. I'm tired of e-mailing and calling legislators. Sadly for another year we must continue this fight. This is a war and we have to fight every battle. If you're a teacher, cop, EMT/medic, sanitation worker, transit employee, secretary, or any other city employee this story should sound painfully familiar. He is forecasting another substantial reduction in employees on the city payroll, so look for cuts everywhere. He is also forecasting Billion dollar deficits in the coming years and claims to have exhausted the city's rainy day fund. There will be more pain and it will be wide spread. Please get involved with your union. Its going to be an election year, step up and support your local's political action agenda.
Thank you for indulging my rant.

People died, young kid/adults died. To sit here and have a discussion about, ventilation and whether or not what those good samaritans was right/wrong, good or bad goes beyond words. Those people did what ANY of us in emergency services would do, HELP. Isn't that why we are all in this anyway ? To help people ? You can't fault someone for just trying to help to lives. To even attempt to go into a burning building with out any gear takes more balls than I could ever have, and those people should be given a pat on the back just for trying to get in there to save those people. This discussion makes me sick and im just as guilty to engage in this, nonsense. RIP to the young lives that were lost in this tragic incident.

Are the facts know on if braking down the door had anything to do with the loss of life or are we just making a 1000 replys posts on the subject.
Did the house have working smoke detectors? Was it up to standards? A few years ago my son and his room mates were looking for off campus housing at Marist. I took one look at the structure and found it a death trap in waiting. Needless to say they did not move in. Get the facts let's not Monday morning quarterback. A sad day for Marist and the brothers at FFD.

That certainly may be the case. But I personally won't vilify these bystanders for doing what they thought was right. They followed their instincts and a certain degree of human nature and attempted to help those in need, when no others could. I'm willing to bet that good Samaritans, over time, have done far, far more good than harm.

The new owners are trying very hard to expand the territory they have now. Many changes are comming along. I have also heard a possible bid for the Putnam ALS contract when it comes up. The new owners have been intouch with other companies to get a better working relationship between companies. Considering we are all in the same line of work and are here to help people. I hope my input helps sorry it took so long to respond.

Mine and my family's hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the victims. What a senseless tradgedy. To the guys at SFRD, SPD and SEMS my best wishes to you all as you deal with this horrific fire and it's aftermath. I know a good many of you and have had the good fortune to have worked with many of you at home. I know beyond any doubt that you all did all that could be done, thank you for those efforts. Having worked jobs in which chlidren and families have perished I know how hard that can be, but I cannot in any way fathom having such a thing happen on Christmas. If there is anything I or my family can do please don't hesitate to ask.
For any out there who may be thinking of Monday morning QBing this incident..., back off and be thankful it wasn't you that had to deal with this horror.
God bless all of you who worked the job and thank you.

…Spoken like someone who doesn’t have a clue about Rattlesnakes.

I can’t believe your serious about this. Snakes can be a huge problem out here. Rattlesnakes are dangerous, especially the juveniles.

Have you ever even seen a Rattlesnake bite? …or the subsequent damage it causes? I’ve seen several working in the EMS system here, most require a hospital stay, some require surgery, and almost all create panic in the victim.

I think Seth was smart to avoid the thing. Just leave it alone. Why chance it? Thankfully, the snake ended up on a glue pad and not coiled up in some corner where his wife, kids, or pet could stumble upon it.

I couldn’t care less about how that snake felt. Alert PETA! I am glad no one got hurt.
  20. effd3918 liked a post in a topic by x635 in Rattlesnake Anyone?
Really? What if my 16 month old daughter was in the garage and the snake got to her or my wife? As much as I love animals, including my dog which could have easily been killed, I love my family and dog more. This is a REALLY dangerous animal.
And further FYI, juvenille rattesnakes are the most agressive. They use their venom not matter what, where adult rattlesnakes conserve theirs more and may even "dry bite". This particular variety I spoke with a LEO who is a snake expert and he told me I did the right thing as this was an especially vicous breed. It's also important that the public know what these types of snakes look like. (You never know who up north is keeping them as pets)
If it wasn't on the sticky pad, IF I could capture it safely, I would put it back into the wild far away. But that was not an option. As mentioned, I love my family, and I don't want to possibly be severly injured or die handling this snake.
  21. effd3918 liked a post in a topic by JJB531 in How Do We Get Rid Of Egos In The Fire Service?
Although I am in no way involved in the Fire Service, I think the idea of egos in Westchester is a problem that affects the 3 main emergency service fields (Police, Fire, & EMS) to varying degrees. I think first we have to understand why the egos exist before we can start coming up with feasible ways to eitehr get rid of them or circumvent them.
I think there are two main reasons egos exist. First being that generally people involved in any of the emergency service fields are typically "Type A" personality individuals. True professionals have the ability to remain calm, cool, and collected, even when the world around us may be falling apart, and do what needs to be done to get the job done. Our services are routinely sought upon by those in need; and it's this dependance on us not just as a service, but as individuals that builds our egos. Knowing that we can do certain things that most ordinary people can't, are empowered with certain responsibilities that most people aren't, and knowing that there is a dependance on us and the services we provide all adds to our egos. Where would society be without Police Officers who maintain order, enforce laws, provide society's blanket of security and stand guard to protect those who can't protect themselves? Where would we be without Firefighters to prevent and extinguish fires and provide lifesaving rescue services? Where would be without EMS providers who nowadays utilize an expanded scope of practice to provide emergency medical care to sick and injured persons, and transport these individuals to definitive care? Our professions (whether paid or volunteer)by their very nature are ego-boosters for some and fuels the "Type A" personality individual.
I think the second reason egos exist here in Westchester is because of the dynamics of the emergncy service "system" (if we can even call it that) that we have created for ourselves here. The adage of "too many chiefs and not enough indians" is extremely prevalent here in every service. To simply state it, when you have 70 different agencies across the county (a ficitious number just for sake of my opinion/arguement), each with individuals who have hopefully come up through the ranks and invested time and experience to obtain positions as Officers/Management/Administration, with each bump up the "emergency service food chain" comes the potential for a bump in an individuals ego. When subordinates continually refer to an indivdiual as Lieutenant, or Captain, or Chief, sometimes it goes to people's heads. When individuals are in charge of running an agency and feel that they are the greatest thing to come along to their agency in the past 100 years, the title and position has gone to their head. When people think that their agency can't possibly survive without their "expertise", the position has gone to their head. The truth of the matter is that in reality, any one of us is replaceable. Some may do a better job then others, but no single person is that important that their job can't be just done as well, if not better, by the next guy (or gal). I can even see how the perks of having a Department car can, and does, go to some peoples heads, because, especially in smaller communities, a Fire Chief driving around is his/her marked Chiefs Car becomes a figure head within their community. What can this lead to? A boost in one's ego. So now you want to tell an individual, who may have given 15 years of dedicated service to their local FD and finally made it to a Chief position, to be open to the idea of consolidation and/or regionalization. Of course there's going to be resistance to the idea of it, because this individual is now saying to themselves, wait a minute, I just dedicated 15 years of MY life to MY FD, and now they want ME to consolidate and take away MY Chiefs car, possibly take away MY title, take away MY power and authority that I worked for and deserve, etc (see the pattern there). It doesn't go over so well with a lot of people. But we created this mess ourselves by creating 70 different agencies within one County and adopting an "every man for himself" mentality. Even in EMS in Westchester, you have some individuals who have worked hard to create positions for themselves as EMS administrators overseeing EMS systems that they worked hard to set-up. Will they be willing to give up their system that they worked hard for to now become a part of a regionalized system where they may not have the same perks (i.e. pay, title, take home car, etc)? I don't know, maybe some will, but I have a feeling the majority won't. I don't want any of them who are reading this to take offense, because I know that most did work hard and deserve to get to where they are, and I can't fault them for looking out for themselves and developing a career out of EMS in a County where EMS is so fragmented and dissheveled.
So how do we get rid of, or circumvent, egos in Westchester County? Like a previous poster said, it's gonna take a whole lot of people to put aside their pride, perks, and tradition to start looking to improve the system as a whole county-wide and not just within the borders of their Town. Is it possible, maybe. But it has to start with changing the mindset of our rookie Cops, Firefighters, and Paramedics for things to change. It's hard to change someone's perspectives and thoughts who's been in the same FD for 50 years and is so resistant to change and has fallen into a mindset that is against consolidation and regionalization because it's a concept that takes away from each individuals fiefdom. The newcomers coming on to the emergency service fields are the future of emergency services in Westchester. Whatever mentality they adopt from the time they come in is only going to become more solidified in their minds as the years go on. We can "groom" them to the benefits of consolidation and regionalization and looking at improving the system beyond the borders of their town, and make these individuals more open to the thought of doing such as they move up the ladder, gain more experience, and become more influential. I believe what would really have to happen to see any kind of change in the near future in any way, is pressure from politicians and the public, as well as legislation and more governing powers at the County level to control emergency services. Now I'm not up to the par with the legality of County government being able to control FD or EMS within it's geographic boundaries, so if this is even feasible is beyond my knowledge, I merely stating my opinion.
End of my rant, these are just my personal opinions, some may agree, some may not, but I think the idea of abolishing egos is one that is definitely an uphill battle in a field where egos are as abundant as the stars.

This was an active FDNY member non-LODD funeral recently upstate. The members of this brothers company decided to give him this send-off. The FDNY Pipes & Drums led the procession as a few hundred members stood along the road in their uniforms. Local fire departments were asked to use their tower ladders to hang a large flag for the procession to pass under. This is the way they chose to respect him. Every fire department/company has the right to honor their own the way they see fit, and Mahopac did.

Speak about the timing of some articles, in the November Fire/Rescue magazine is an article about funerals and discusses "an important question when honoring firefighters who have died"
Line of Duty … or Not Line of Duty?

ARE YOU FOR REAL????? MAHOPAC DID AN EXCELLENT JOB GIVING RESPECT TO THEIR PRESIDENT. IT SHOWS THE BROTHERHOOD AND CORDERY THE FIRE SERVICE HAS. CAN ANYONE TELL ME THE DEFINITION OF A LINE OF DUTY FUNERAL?? AS OPPOSED TO A REGULAR ACTIVE FIRE FIGHTERS FUNERAL? NOT TO CHEAPEN ANYTHING THE FUNERAL IS WHAT THE DEPARTMENT DECIDES TO DO FOR THEIR PASSING MEMBERS. IT IS NOT MY INTENTION TO BRING CAREER OR VOLUNTEER INTO THIS BUT!! THIS MAN GAVE OF HIS LIFE AND TIME FOR FREE AND DESIERVES THE RESPECT OF HIS COMRADS AND THE RESIDENTS OF HIS TOWN.
