Just finished this book recently. I found it enjoyable and interesting. It was interesting to see how the author came from a background completly opposite of the type of person you would expect to become a firefighter, and how he transforms into a firefighter. This book follows him from the civil service test, through rookie school, his first year, and beyond as a firefigher in the city of Oakland, California.The review below does a good job of summing it up.

I'm too impulsive now for film photography, lol, so I'm 100% Digital. I really enjoy all the benefits that digital has for me over the film, especially when learning how to take photos with such a powerful camera, and considering most of my photos end up on a computer. For people who publish (in print), film is still the best choice I hear. As for the camera, I recently upgraded to a Canon Digitial Rebel,and I still utilize my Canon Digital Elph SD110. I also have a Nikon film SLR, I may dust that off and play with the "old fashioned" method just for kicks.

What are you looking to spend? My opinions: Probaly the best option would be to buy a disposable camera, and when you go to develop the film, get the photos on a CD. That way, if you lose the camera, you only lose 10 bucks. The other option, is to buy a used digital camera off Ebay. Chances are, if you buy from a reputable person, you can get a good camera at a decent price. Many people tend to sell their older cameras there when the upgrade. But it's Ebay, so you have to be very careful about who you buy from. Personally, I think for a good, durable camera thats nice and small, especially when you have to tote it around at work among other equipment, a Canon Digital Elph is your best bet.

OK, So we all know there are some great stories about what we've done to each other in the name of humor and camraderie...(or so we say!)..........Anybody care to share a particularly amusing story? Names can be changed to protect the innocent, lol!

I'm looking foward to it, as well as finding out what this new series will be. I'm hoping they announce one of two things, either the FDNY Rescue set, or a Yonkers REP. Either those or the Super Pumper sysyem, lol. Also I'm suspecting a nice Ahrens-Fox to be there. :-k

Did New 12 cover this event at all? I don't remember seeing it. Definetly a great cause. It's also kind of a reminder of how much we have, sometimes excess in this county, equipmentwise....and how little some departments in rural areas actually have. It's good to see this equipment was put to good use instead of being left in a back room until somebody decides to throw it away. I was interested a few months back in organizing a drive, I am still looking to do something at some point if anyone is interested. I think it would be cool to do something on the EMS side as well. WAS967, lol!

Elmsford used to have a drive in theatre as well. It's where the Sam's Club now stands on Route 9A. I like the movie party/BBQ idea. Now to only find a big white building, lol!

One of the things I like about Gowans-Knight is that they are a small custom local builder. That, to me, offers advantages over the big name "faceless" corporate fire apparatus manufacturers. The use of a small custom local builder has several advantages. You can you be more active in the manufacturing process since you can actually visit the factory more often, which a lot of the time results in increased customization. The smaller guys are often are not concered with quantity, but with quality and have more time to pay attention to detail. Often they take more pride since they are a local company in the apparatus that they build. Some of their more unique appatus designs, such as Kingsbury NY and Pound Ridge Engine 112, are just proof that they can meet the needs of most departments. Bigger....in the case of manufacturers...... isn't always better. Not to mention using "hometown" builders contributes to a local economy and jobs.
