  1. Our new Utility 324, to replace our early 1960's Chevy Stepvan (think "bread truck"), should be in this week or next. I believe it is to be a Ford 550 crew cab, walk around body with roll up doors. To carry our portable generators and pumps, etc.
  2. In honor of my dad, Bernard W. Decker (1925-2011). WW2, Luzon and Corregidor(Phillipines), Honshu (Japan), and Austria. Starting school late because of moving around alot at the beginning of the Depression, he was drafted out of high school. In 2009, he received his high school diploma from his school. At ease, soldier. Til we meet again.
  3. I'll retract the part about "them" killing an EMT. Having worked there for a time prior to that incident, I firmly believe that actions and inactions by the administration at the time directly contributed to the incident that occurred.
  4. Lets not forget Empire State Ambulance. That was before they changed their name to Hudson valley Paramedic Services.
  5. Where should I park my truck? I could use a new tailgate.
  6. Just a guess that maybe NFD IC was busy with a few other things and that's why? I really don't know. There were about 75 FF's on scene. NFD, New Windsor, Vails Gate, Cornwall, Good Will, Air Guard, plus stand-by companies. MLSS also had 2 ALS units and rehab unit on scene.
  7. From what I saw last night, definitely NOT MSMC students living there.
  8. Spending our way to prosperity. Wish I could do that. Instead, I have to live with what I make.
  9. This is why there should be some type of hose restraint. (Oh yeah, the 2.5 seconds to remove it might make a significant difference in saving someone or something and the $2.50 bungie cord will put us over budget). A few years ago, a young girl was killed when struck in the head by the nozzle on a hose that had fallen and was being dragged. (10 y/o Coraopolis, Pa).
  10. It serves us well. We have the ability to operate 5 extrication tools at the same time as well as air tools and air bags. There is also a 4 position 9000lb winch, 6 head light tower, etc., etc. Covering I-84, I-87, and the 17K/Rt300 corridors gives us many opportunities to use these tools. Planning on it being at the County Parade on Saturday. Anyone is welcome to stop by our house to check out our other apparatus (2 Engines, 95' Tower)
  11. just going to make sure the generator starts, and get fresh gas for it. pick up some stuff in the basement just in case. other than that, nothing really special. Looks like it might make it here as a category 2... we'll see. picked up some extra hours that night 6-mid.
  12. Been there, done that. Drove to Myrtle Beach the night I got the cast off my leg (which had been on for 10 weeks). After driving all night and setting up camp, went down to the beach where I promptly fell asleep for a couple hrs. Woke up with 2nd and even some 3rd degree burns from below my knee to my ankle. Spent a couple hrs at the ER, and the rest of my "vacation" in the shade. Even the wind blowing hurt.
  13. see here for info http://www.winonalakefd.org/
  14. Just some minor corrections/additions to the original IA. The tractor trailer did not go down the embankment. The pickup truck he hit after he crossed the median did. Challenging extrication with significant passenger compartment intrusion from the initial collision as well as the subsequent roll down the embankment. Truck came to rest on the driver's side approximately 75 feet below. Access was made from the Southbound Thruway. Units on scene were: Winona Lake Car 1, Car 2, R323 (Heavy Rescue), E320 (Engine), Car 10 (Support Van with additional personnel for traffic control), Orange Lake Car 1, R329 (Rescue-Pumper), Orange Co. Coordinator 36-13, T/Newburgh EMS (BLS), MLSS (ALS), T/New Windsor EMS, State Police, T/Newburgh PD, NYS Police CVE, NYS DOT Enforcement, HELP Truck. Additionally, Good-Will FD set up the LZ which was terminated without pt transport and provided stand-by coverage.
  15. In the case of the Broome County incident, the person was swept from the vehicle after it left the roadway and landed in the river which was running high and fast due to recent heavy rains. Two bodies were recovered from the vehicle. Only the driver managed to make it out alive. Searches were conducted for several days following the accident. http://www.pressconnects.com/article/20110605/NEWS01/110605003/Body-found-along-Chenango-River?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRO
  16. Our dept physicals are almost as useless as my D.O.T. physical. Blood pressure, pulse, vision and hearing test. EKG's and fit testing. But this is all done at a resting rate. My resting BP of 120/60 and pulse of 64 means nothing if a little exercise sends me through the roof. A state fire instructor I had for a class recently, said that we are killing ourselves and each other with heart attacks. We need to be more selective in membership and have the nerve to tell some people that they CANNOT be active members. just because someone really really wants to be a firefighter does not mean they can be one. As he said, he really really wants to be a NY Ranger. Just because he can't skate does that mean they shouldn't accept him?
  17. Therein is a problem. According to what I was told by HVREMSCO, in order to have/keep your EMS Agency code, the state requires, among other things, that you respond to ALL medical calls, not just priority calls. You can't pick and choose which calls to respond to. We used to do just that. We will still respond if EMS requests us, but we have fewer and fewer members who are trained/certified providers now because we don't run EMS calls anymore.
  18. http://www.pressconnects.com/article/20110504/NEWS01/105040408/Endicott-pulls-plug-EMS-program?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE Another link to the story from the Binghamton Press, the local newspaper there. Unfortunatly, the state doesn't allow a fire dept to say we will only respond to x-type calls and still keep an EMS agency number. In their opinion, it's all or nothing.
  19. I would recommend this to all who can attend. I set one of these up last year for Orange County Battalion 3. The guys from LifeNet did an awesome job, even going as far as bringing in another helicopter when the one that was to come was sent on a call.
  20. In NYS, the EMT-I curriculum follows the 1985 standard whereas most other states follow the 1999 standard. A big difference. Here in the Hudson Valley, the regional protocols require simutaneous dispatch of a medic to any ALS call. At least in Westchester, there is the option for a two-tiered response. In many upstate regions, the EMT-I is the main provider of pre-hospital care. I think this is due to the lack of paramedics and the longer transport times to definitive care. I wouldn't consider my time spent in the "I" class a waste, however, opportunities to utilize my skills are very limited. Additionally, because of the regional protocols requiring the simutaneous dispatch of a medic, I don't know of any paying EMS agency that will pay more for an EMT-I. I doubt I will renew my "I" when it expires next year.
  21. I believe that the MLSS agreement with the city is informal and they do not get paid by the city. It is, in general, a money losing agreement. As someone already pointed out, most are under/uninsured. My own opinion is that the previous attempt by NFD to run an EMS division was a way for them to justify jobs. They assumed in their numbers to city counsel that they would actually get paid for some of the EMS calls. Their recent agreement with the city saved the 12 positions that were to be cut through layoffs by taking paycuts for a defined period of time. I believe 5% for 2 years.
  22. I didn't make this job, but saw the guys last night. Everyone is ok.
  23. Unfortunatly, we only have one AED, left over from the days when we used to run EMS calls. It is on our rescue. Some in our current administration are anti-EMS and opposed requests to get even one more to put on our first due engine as well as getting most, if not all active members CPR/AED trained. My belief is that it will be needed for one of our own rather than someone else and more than likely at a scene other than an MVA. Our rescue is first due at MVA's but fourth due at structure fires/AFA's.
  24. Along with the "expedite" request, usually from a unit alreasdy on scene, is the info received from dispatch. In Orange Co, they frequently will say something like "XX Fire Dept, respond for a 2 car mva, unknown injuries, children in the car". Ok. so there are children in the car. I don't care if it's granny and her dog in the car. The response should still be the same. All this does is up the adrenaline for some responders, maybe making them a little less cautious in response than they would normally be. Ultimately, the safe and efficient response is the responsibilty of the driver. But don't think that the officer won't be held responsible as well.
