  1. Just shows how FEMA needs to be totally taken apart and rebuilt. While several websites did say community relations, why send firefighters, highly trained in SAR as well as medics to do PR.
  2. TRUCK6018 you are correct. If called by and employed by FEMA, they cover you, If you go as a FEMA volunteer you are still covered by them. If you go and FEMA did not ask you or your department. You are not covered under the Mutual Aid portion of you fire companies insurance. The only thing you can hope for is under the "good samaritan act" which does not cover much. If your car gets broken into or stolen or you are in an accident, your insurance may not pay or at least give you a hard time. While we all want to go myself included think of the risks involved. Legally nyour department is under no obligation to cover you in any way and the insurance companies won't.
  3. Garrison Fire did one today and another next Saturday.
  4. Today on the radio I heard a something that we all fear. Two words that if the supply starts to dwindle, GAS RATIONING! With a percentage of our refining capabilities out this could be a possibility. Home heating oil prices going through the roof. I called to suppliers local to me today, $2.49 a gallon for 200 gals. My last delivery in March was $1.79. That's 70 cents in 5 months. I see a run on sweat shirts and sweaters this fall.
  5. First X635 your link cannot be found. Second as for what we can do, first and formost they need the things we take for granted, drinking water, toiletries, basic food, a place to sleep, the list goes on. In the coming weeks and months cleanup crews. The list goes on and they don't know where to start. Lets put some ideas together as a group, coordinate and do it.
  6. Smaller cars, conservation, If we use less gas and oil, they sell less. Right now the big oil companies are making record profits and the little guys, the gas stations are not. Small business that have to use vehicles for delivery etc are getting hurt the worst. 2 years ago I got rid of my SUV and bought an AWD car. Went from 10 to 26 MPG. Made my house more energy efficient too. I stopped buying name brand gas if I can find no name cheaper. There is not enough of a difference to pay another 5 to 10 cents a gallon. If we all did saome of these things if would make a difference and when big oil see's we are buying less as a nation they may rethink their stratergy.
  7. Shantz - Chemical Eng #4 is now Engine 6 I believe stationed at 470 E Lincoln, Fire HQ ]
  8. In re-reading this thread I will say as for going on all EMS call? Tom, I agree if you have too many people just standing around doing nothing or getting in the way it makes no sense. Plus it may make the paitient or family nervous. We all know everyone runs to make the rig and not everyone is EMS trained in any way. As for MVA's, the other day we were returning from wires down and GVAC was dispatched for an MVA with minor injuries but we were not. Our chief called Putnam and told them we too were going to respond. Good thing we did. There was smoke coming from the cars electrical system. Had we not gotten there and attended to that we could have ended up with a car fire on a flatbed. I think any time EMS rolls on an MVA it should be a joint EMS/FD response and only to MVA's should it be automatic. Other EMS calls, let the on scene medic deside if he/she needs FD assistance.
  9. Other stations that are now closed, 211 4th Ave, former home to Eng. 3 and 4, 6th Ave. the old Truck 1. Now go back to the old, old books. Where was Eng. 6 before HQ? what about when Truck 2 was at Oak St. Where was Eng 1? What about the Fulton St station, where was Truck 3 or Eng 5?
  10. I think first and formost is more available training. I know we need FF1 and 2 for the newer people coming in but there are dozens of tother classes that need to be given. Plus refresher courses for the members who have been around since things change over the years. In addition more coordination between county training facilities. Sometimes your own county training center is not easy one or closest one to get to. Also the BS with firehouse politics has got to go. We are all here for one reason, or at least I hope we are. Lets just help one another instead of pointing fingers, making acusations etc. How's that for a start?
  11. Great shots .Really worked to get some of those shots of the collapse on Broadway. Love the elevated shotsdown onto the site.
  12. He's a 16 Y.O. kid who's father is a member of Peekskill FD. He does have a website with many pictures from fires MVA's etc. in the Peekskill area. It seems to be legit.
  13. Want home made? Little shop accross from the Peekskill train station next to Sue's Luchenette. Small place but great ice cream, home made, the'll even make home made whip cream if you ask.
  14. Magnesium is becoming more and more popular in autos. Volvo engines, some Jeep engines as well. Another problem is the number of cars with more than just front airbags. We now have side airbags, rear airbags and so on. Some minivans and SUV's advertize as many as 12 airbags. Having to cut a roof off is becoming a hazard as you never know where the cylinder for the airbag is.
  15. Mt Vernon has had a foam unit (until getting the old truck from the airport this year) and has always an engine converted to a foam unit since the late 60's.
  16. If you've never sat in and watched what goes on duing a shift at 60 Control, you cannot and donot have the right to comment. I had the pleasure of spending a few hours there reuniting with an old friend who works there. Watching the process when calls come and to when they are dispatched. There is much involved/ Making sure the right department is notified. how many towns in this county have the same or similar street names, a call comes in for 1234 Main St. What town? Or 1234 Main, is it street, lane, drive etc. When people call they are sometimes not 100% with it, could be stree because whatever call it is they are involved, could be many reasons they are rushing the info. Also lets face it, not everyone in this county speaks perfect english. Many on this board can't spell. Info has to be entered in the system, dispatched, followed up, radio's have to be acknowledged. Then there is the radio trafic. XXFD is out on the road on a drill and talking on the radio and over calls. 2, 3 or 4 calls are going on at the same time on 46.26 and 60 control has to keep everything sorted out. Let me tell you, THEY DO A GREAT JOB. I couldn't do it. I don't have the patience to keep everything straight. ](*,)
  17. I have had one since Christmas. It's great. Set it to record shows and never worry about not having a tape and you're right about season pass. Pick you favorites and just record whenever its on no matter what channel. It holds 120 hours (at least it claims that.) I haven't tried to set it from the computer yet. The only drawback, the delay when changing the channels.
  18. First we need to cut down the amount of beer after these parades and after meetings. There are many who look at meetings and parades as an excuse to drink. I was once a member of a department whose members came back from parades drunk, hit the firehouse bar right after the meeting and drink till midnight. I have even seen open beer cans in the rig. I'm all for a dry fire house. Limit beer to only the very special event and limit the amount one can have.
  19. Hudson 144, In addition to over and around wires I remember conversations that back when it was purchased that it was also had the ability to go below street level in the New Haven Railroad cut as well.
  20. As a minimum, wash and polish every piece of fire apparatus in the county
  21. Just proves if your rich and famous you can get away with just about anything.
  22. Ma. ybe since its on the same grounds, we could get the DES rigs, Engine and Ladder 7. I don't think they respond on the weekends and if they are not used in training the day we choose, I don;t see any reason Comm. Sutton or Jackson would say no.
  23. Continental Village FD has the Dog Mascot suit, Cold Spring PD has a McGruff suit. I'm sure we could get them for this.
  24. Here is the link for the OVERLOOK DRIVE IN http://www.overlookdrivein.com/schedule/
  25. Used to be a time FDMV had 6 engines, 3 ladders plus a foam unit, a spare ladder and a spare engine. Those were the days it was a combo dept.
