All I can say to this is timing is everything. Saturday morning and not much else happening in the Bronx. I would sure hope FDNY could get all of those resources to that location. The only thing that your run down doesn't show is the on scene time of ALL of the units. How long does it take to get ALL of the apparatus and manpower on the scene. It was almost at the farthest Northeast point of the Bronx.
You mentioned Pelham Manor FD and what can they do. Back in the early 1980's on a hot Sunday afternoon around 4 PM of the 4th of July weekend, there was a 2 car MCI at almost that exact spot. Actually it was at the turn-a-round about 100 yards east of the bus crash site. There was 9 total patients, of which 4-5 were critical with the remaining patients, none were walking wounded. All patient were boarded. 2 of the critical were in respiratory arrest on the scene. Both from blocked airways. NYSP and NYPD were on scene. New Rochelle Amb 1 was dispatched and was the first unit other than the 1 NYSP unit and the Hwy 1 unit on the scene. Because the accident was in the Bronx, The Hwy 1 unit was advised to have FDNY, and NYC EMS respond to the scene. The HWY 1 unit had already called for emergency services and he advised that NYC had no EMS units available in the Bronx that could respond. A triage unit out of Jacobi was en route. At this point NR Amb 1 requested through NRPD dispatcher that 4-5 additional ambulances were needed. 3 additional ambulances from Westchester were on scene in 10 minutes and while waiting for an update of the ETA of the 4th ambulance, a BLS unit from Misericordia Hospital showed up. All of the Westchester ambulances (4) were ALS. The Bronx unit advised that if they weren't needed they were to become available because there were no other in service units for the entire Bronx.
At this point fire units started to arrive. 2 engines from Pelham Manor. They were asked if FDNY was on the way. They stated that FDNY called them and requested that they respond because no fire units available in the Bronx. Units from Queens were responding.
The triage unit from NYC EMS had the Misericordia unit take the 2 least injured to Jacobi. The triage unit then advised the remaining on scene ambulances that Jacobi can not handle any other patients and to transport the remaining patients to Westchester hospitals. The remaining 7 patients were transported to New Rochelle Hospital.
The total on scene time was less than 25 minutes from arrival of the 1st ambulance till the last patient was transported. At the time that the last patient was removed from the scene, no FDNY fire units were on scene. It is not know if they were still en route from Queens or they were told to go in service.
As I said at the beginning of my comments....."timing is everything"

The old NRFD Station 1, like many of the old houses, had a coal burning furnace. Part of the duties of the man on watch or the probie was to make sure the furnace was stoked. It was the duty of the man with the all night watch to make sure the guys were kept warm all night. This may have been the beginning of 'don't ask, don't tell' !

Sounds like they were responding with a 'scene support truck' and look what happened to the crew. Maybe this is why WCDES scene trailers are such a mystery and no manpower to man it. The county is protecting the mental health of it's firefighters.

Thanks....the initial report I heard was for the TL-6 to respond to the scene. This was on the first request for MA to the fire for 1 engine and 1 TL. The company was dispatched, but not with the tower ladder.

In re: to the 5th alarm. 2301 notified 60-control that he was declaring a 5th alarm due to the apparatus that was on the scene. There was no additional apparatus dispatched at that time. It doesn't sound like there was a 1-2-3-4-5 alarm progression of dispatched apparatus. There was a second alarm called on arrival. Very soon after the second alarm a request for 1 and 1 to the scene with a TL requested for the truck.
re: water. Around 4:30 AM there was a report of water entering houses on the top end of Webster Ave. Just south of the Twin Lakes. I believe this is one of the major water main entry areas into N.R. Covering companies dispatched to that location found a large water main break in the middle of the road. Later there was a second water main break located on Webster south of the original break.

Good questions. Re the water problem. I stopped by the scene today and found out that there were two major water leaks in the nortwest section of the city. They both were in a 24 inch main, Both located on Webster Ave. One was near the Rosedale Nursery and the other near the the Hutchinson River Pkwy Wester Ave. northbound exit. Webster Ave was closed at both locations. I also heard that the NRFD asked for increased water capacity and pressure at the incident. This might have caused undue stress on those sections of pipe. Boy just what u don't need in a incident like that. Great job by all.

Can a New Rochelle Brother explain the alarm order....The I.A. states 2nd alarm on arrival, and 5th alarm with fire showing through the roof. Was this a progressive alarm increase, or were all NRFD units committed upon the 2nd, and as M.A. Companies began arriving in the city, were they special called to the scene; did this constitute technically a 3rd and 4th alarm? As NRFD spare units activated were they treated as an alarm increase?
    Just curious.
Looks like a tough night, the fire commanders and firefighters had their hands full from the beginning; keep in mind NRFD rolls with only two firefighters and an officer, or three firefighters (or has that changed) and from the company officers, chauffers, firefighters to 2302 to 2301 I'm sure their full professional experience was called into play in making some very important choices to prevent this fire from becoming a conflagration in the 2-3 exposures. Is it true there was a water company issue on the other side of the city? And you guys managed to get big water on a big fire, let's here it for straight tip streams...ALL of Westchester should take a look....
Congratulations to the FD's involved, with an apparent lack of serious injuries....sorry to the Church members, I'm sure there are many broken faith-tested souls out there today. May they find Peace with the Lord after this test.

There may not be snow as we have seen so far this year, but the storm map show an icy mix for the lower Hudson Valley. AccuWeather goes on to say that we may get rain from the storm. That can cause more of a problem then a foot of snow.

    May I say, what we have here is a "culture clash" of sorts. Most of us know the following, but for the edification of the member who asked the question;
There is no such thing as a career chief's turnout coat that says "Ex Chief." The only way a career chief would still be wearing a turnout coat and not be a chief anymore, would be through a demotion (voluntary or involuntary) and the new coat he would be wearing would display his current rank, or through a move from being a career Chief to a career Commissioner.
In volunteer fire departments, the selection of chiefs is a different process than in the career civil service system (which is primarily based on testing). The election of a chief does carry a significance to the members of those departments. Words like "honor" carry a lot of weight in both systems. But, a member would probably say he was honored to have been selected to serve as chief, and therefore might chose to wear a turnout coat that displays "Ex Chief", as a way of showing his gratitude to the department for that honor as they see it. Additionally, the other members of the department will probably recognize that "Ex Chief" simply by leaving the "Ex" out of the title. It's a way for other members to show their respect; especially if they believe that "Ex Chief" was a good chief while in title.
In this particular instance, there is no way to lump the two different systems together, or for that matter to even try and compare them. They are distinctly different, so maybe we should just note those differences.....maybe not judge them....and just say.....

Being chased is not an excuse to run!! So the driver was vindicated because he thought he was being chased by a cop? How much sense does that make? The driver of the fleeing car should pay the 14 million for injuring his passenger, and the volunteer FF should get a ticket for improper use of a blue light.
  24. LTNRFD liked a post in a topic by abaduck in Very expensive Blue Light
I'm going to open my big mouth and bite on this... a few random points:
    1. Blue light. Big mistake. That's not what it's for. And as a wise man once said to me, if you drive like an a$$hole, people say 'there goes another a$$hole'. If you drive like an a$$hole with a blue light, it's 'there goes another one of those a$$hole firemen'.
    2. Aside from that, on the limited information available, I disagree totally with this judgement. It's ridiculous.
    3. The word 'chase' is used freely. Was he chasing? Or following? What's the difference in law? I've 'followed' an obvious drunk driver and called them into the cops, and had the satisfaction of a 'thank you' call back for telling them exactly where to find the guy.
    4. So the idiot driver wrapped it round a tree and half-killed their passenger. How is anyone other than the driver liable, unless they were literally forced off the road? If they had stopped at the accident, it wouldn't have happened. If they hadn't driven like an idiot, it wouldn't have happened. Why didn't he sue the bloody driver?
    5. I can't remotely see how the town can be liable for this. Way too far remote from the cause of the injury. Unless the report is totally incomplete and the damages were actually awarded because... he crashed into a dangerous tree which the town should have cut down or something. I'd tell him to go whistle for the money, and I can't see this surviving an appeal.
    6. If you have confidence in the standard of your driving, do what I've done for the last three years or so - install a 'spy in the cab' camera. Activates automatically when you start the car, runs all the time. No arguments about who's to blame after an incident with video evidence available.
    7. If you're in the habit of driving like an a$$hole, ignore 6. above!
