Their benefit is to the insurance industry in reducing damages incurred during a fire. Why would anyone but the insurance industry contribute money to their existence for anything more than nostalgia?

Yes there are many more ambulance crashes, but how many are fatal? Cost and risk are both factors we should be taking into account with patient care decisions. You're not going to deny a pt a needed resource because of cost, but you may make sure that its a needed resource.

That entire generation of scopes went bad. Pleasantville's was one of the last 2 remaining in service at one point. There were several design and engineering flaws that doomed them to fail, that have long since been worked out. Last I heard it belonged to Seagrave and was headed to the scrap pile.

People are acting like this is some outrageous burden. Its inconvenient but extremely doable.

No one has doubted their ability as providers, but spending 20 mins in an environment that created 2 serious medical conditions is a mistake in judgement. That and I hope you bought CO rather then CO2 meters.

I provides someone who has no personal ties to people he must supervise. It may also provide someone who is more beholding to the mayor than the men and women serving under them.

Govt agencies and people acting in an official capacity on their behalf have no right to freedom of speech. Individuals and as an extension of an individual corporations have that right.

Maybe they had an increase in improper use of these procedures, or maybe Its just part of their continuing evaluation of their agents knowledge and effectiveness of ongoing training.

Not going to be much help there since your closest vehicles should be blocking the scene and not facing it. Suits due to care provided are very infrequent and would be better prevented with personal recording systems. NYS laws are very clear when it comes to emergency vehicle operations. We are usually at fault since we are to be responding with due reguard. Anyone who gets hit by an emergency vehicle unless grossly culpable will win in civil court. So where's the benefit of the dash cams? I have family all over NYC and I don't want cops, ff, or EMTs slowing down for fear of being disciplined by their commanding officers. What's an acceptable delay? Find a fire and you're still 4.5 minutes from the first apparatus getting on scene. Stop breathing on any street corner and you're looking at an average of more than 5 minutes till someone gets to your address, then they have to find you. I can't hold my breath for long enough to survive either of those. If they're getting into accidents train them better or more frequently. Don't babysit them.

There has been lots of very interesting research in both circadian rhythms and shift work in the past few years. Remember, in the scope of human evolution the ability to deviate from the typical day night patter is extremely new. Increasingly clearly being forced to change from your natural rhythm is potentially very bad for the body and mind. However people who are able to deviate are showing some interesting benefits. One of the more compelling is people wit the ability to stay up longer and sleep less.

This is all media hype. Every couple years there's a new product that is ruining society. It was zima, then hard cider, then redbull, and now this.

Has anyone tried setting up a large scale draft operation like this on the clock simulating actual response times? Curious to see how long it would take.

There's no V8 for 2011 Explorers, but the new stock V6 only makes 10HP less than last year's V8 and the pursuit V6 make more torque and allegedly more usable torque over a nice flat curve (Haven't seen any dyno charts) than last years V8. Sounds like the new V6 will outrun the old V8s.

Residency is not required.

PFD has used the humat and other variants as long as they've had LD hose. First engine lays in from the hydrant and second engine ties into the valve. Slowly start increasing pressure from the pump to the valve. As this pressure starts to equal the pressure flowing from the hydrant the valve begins to open filling the line from the valve to the engine. Once you exceed the hydrant pressure the valve opens fully and all water is diverted through the pump and then on to the supply hose.

Anyone is eligible for the waived application fee. It is income based and handled by DCAS. The rides are handled by the recruitment unit. Talk to them and get a ride.

Outside of agency specific rules regarding photography, there is nothing preventing you from taking photos of anything plainly visible to the public. Body present or not, shoot away if its out in the street. Just be aware of agency rules if you do it on duty. As for any moral issues with the potos, look up Arthur Fellig. One of the great photo journalists and his motives were primarily to make money.

FDNY we have 24 hours after our last shift to have the MI or CVA and we're covered. Infectious disease is a whole different animal and luckily largely untested depending on confirmed or suspected exposure and high risk vs low risk exposure.

Only Fire. While EMS is still hiring (only agency still expanding), they are fast coming up on their allotted head count. Few PD classes, no fire classes and a generally poorer job market has slowed the severe staffing losses to a trickle.

Sorry, I was going from a poorly copied Journal news clip that seemed like The ME's office was disputing the unnamed LE source that leaked the results.

According to the ME, Henry wasn't drunk. Yeah he was under age, but can we be realistic, underage drinking is everywhere. I sure as hell did it, along with almost every cop, firefighter, EMT and medic I've known. Driving under the influence, holy crap thats absolutely pandemic in our jobs. Lets run a DWI checkpoint outside any christmas party and see the field day the Post has with it. The guy who did this had no criminal history, liked by coaches at all his schools, and many of his friends. We're shocked and angered that people are defending him? He may actually have been a good guy and none of these people know the officers involved. Anyone watch the video? How favorable of an impression does it leave on witnesses to have Henry lay in the street bleeding while the officers look on and a couple others chase them off with their guns drawn? I'm not criticizing the officers, just trying to understand how I would feel if I was there. How many of us have jumped to defend on of our own before the facts were in only to find we put our foot in our mouth? Is it that impossible to believe he was startled by an officer with a gun knocking on his window, panicked and ACCIDENTALLY nearly killed an officer resulting in him getting shot. I know Officer Hess. He is a great guy and in my opinion one of the best officers in the dept. One of the last guys you would even expect to see involved in something like this. The papers are despicable, and absolutely sensationalizing this. The witnesses have all been tainted by the media hoopla and I hope the investigators are able to get to the bottom of this mess. In the end, a family lost their child and an officer has to make peace with a decision made in the most stressful and impossible conditions. Everyone loses.

When the brigade meets you for a call especially in the cavernous bowels of GCT it makes it it a breeze. Often they even have the patient headed out to us...when they're there. Other times its the goose chase.

The only laws I know of protect employees from being forced to work more than 16. We're allowed to abuse ourselves as much as we want. As far as your agency implementing said rules you have little recourse to track their hours worked outside. All you're doing is forcing your employees to lie about their hours worked and how tired they are.

If you or anyone you know filed for the last exam using a new card with an expiration date of July 31st 2013 DCAS is going to or already has disqualified you. They wrongly assumed that EMT cards are issued 36 months before the expiration date. You have only 14 days to file a letter of appeal with DCAS. You must do this right away!!! If you're having any trouble, PM me.

Early in this thread Izzy said the tractor trailer crossed over the lanes to strike the engine. I didn't see anything about the driver being cited for impairment. So why is an experienced driver slamming into the back of a well lit fire engine? Luckily the driver saved his crew by placing the rig in the right place. There is enough research and countless anecdotal reports to support the moth to a flame explanation for these accidents. Instead of addressing this we add more and brighter lights. Glad everyone went home, but accidents continue to increase and its time people start asking why.
