They also make their telephone poles out of concrete. It is not because of fire, is because they cut down most of their forrests to burn, build ships etc. and how much was destroyed in multiple wars. That is the main reason that 200 years ago they wanted to control No. America...timber.

There have been 1 or 2 dozen calls over the last 30 years along the sound shore that required a dive team.
How about 1st we worry about getting enough trained people on every ambulance and fire truck to the hundreds of thousands of calls over that same time period.

A lot of people seem to forget, even in NYC PD and FD are rarely first on scene to a distress call. The first responders to flight 1549 were the NY Waterways ferries.

Wrong. As with any emergency, as long as you have a plan in place, and that plan is to "Contact X resource for their specialty," then your covered. I'm sure you have sewers and confined spaces in your district. Do you have a confined space rescue team in house, in your department ready to go? If someone is digging a trench, are you required to immediately train and supply them with a technical rescue team specializing in trench rescue out of your department? No.
If the plan in place in your SOG/SOP's is to call for a specialized team, then your department has done their required duty. You can train your members to reach, and throw, but rowing and going is a different skill.
Just as a friendly correction, it's reach, throw, row, go.

Some foam was knocked off the wing tip when a sudden 35 knot gust of wind pushed the Enterprise into a wooden pier as it was towed under a bridge. It was painted to protect the exposed metal and will be repaired at a later date.

There were a lot of problems moving water immediately after 9/11. By buying 2000gpm pumps any engine can be a source or relay pumper. Its relatively cheap compared to adding more satellite engines.

With this type of structural building material you can easily engineer the building to transfer loads in the event of failure. Its no different than using precast concrete or steel. I'm worried about the glue used to build these pieces. Large diameter timber is great because it is a solid contiguous material. This stuff is laminated. Is the glue flammable? Does the glue fail when exposed to heat? If the glue fails under heat then as you heat the material it will separate and no longer be a single solid member (bundle of sticks vs solid log). If the glue is flammable then you have a bundle of sticks coated in gasoline. Since this is the problem plaguing all current engineered lumber products I'm going to assume this stuff is another disaster waiting to happen. These structures are going to need serious sprinkler systems and multiple exits.

HIPAA is often thrown around but it is very often out of context. A fire department that is not a certified FR or EMS agency is usually not a "covered entity" under HIPAA regulation. The hospital is probably a "health care provider" under the definition in HIPAA but they can still participate in a QA/QI program with EMS agencies. Identifying patient information is seldom required to have a useful discussion about a call in the QA/QI setting so HIPAA shouldn't be an issue.
50-65, I would say work with your local EMS agency and participate with them in the QA/QI process and you should be able to get most of your questions answered.
Of course this pre-supposes that your local EMS agency has a bonafide QA/QI program but that's another issue for another thread.
    Good luck!

I think what he asked was if his department responds to an accident and as an example extricates a victim, he wants to know how to get info. No medical director is required for that. In addition your department can respond to EMS assist calls with out being registered as a BLSFR department. Now if your EMT's want to rapid re-cert your department needs to participate in order to get reimbursed or if they want to take an EMT or First Responder class with out paying out of pocket your department needs to be registered with the state.

In reality it shouldn't matter, but it doesn't look good. Would you be bothered if he were on yelp looking up a place to grab something for dinner? Facebook has evolved into more than just social site for keeping up with friends. Does his dept use it for recruiting or some other official purpose?
Personally I wouldn't want the dept knowing what websites I'm looking at so I'm staying off their computer. Otherwise as long as he is doing his job to the standards required does it matter if he takes a few minutes to catch up with his wall posts?

You're right and you're wrong. The majority of fire runs are not EMS, not even close. It's not even 1/3. That said, city island should certainly have a bus. At the very least there should be one there at peak tourist times. Let's not play off each other here. We both need every resource we have and more. No one on our jobs is looking to buy into this "do more with less" B.S.

Most people see EMS as a luxury rather than necessity. Everyone thinks they can control their own medical emergencies. No one is under the illusion that they can control their own house fire. The best example of the average person's priorities is personal finance. People time and again chose to give up their health insurance before forgoing the annual vacation when money gets tight.

You can do it without running hydrants through your entire district or without buying a fleet of tankers. Simple things like automatic mutual aid and equipment standardization can get you the water flow you need to improve your rating.

You're right about racism. There is no such thing as reverse....
Sad you didn't take he test....you're the one who loses there.... There may be some real B.S. at work here, but everyone still has a fair shot....just like they did in 1999 and 2002.

We have blamed the legislature, the courts and the vulcans and while they all have a hand in this....The despirate impact has two solutions; One is the supreme court, the other is NYC has to prove that the educational level being tested for is needed. Chief R. has simply listed why firefighters need basic educational skills to perform the job. It is sad that NYC can not (or has not) shown this to the court, because once they prove it is needed to pass the fire acadamy and perform at the minimum standard in the field, then this issue should go away.

Its ridiculously easy. If you fail the EMS physical you should be loaded into an ambulance and taken to the ER immediately.

Shamefully....yes. However, let's all remember that this is currently before the second circuit court on appeal. No matter who wins, the other side will probably petition the Supreme Court and no one will be getting any money or any seniority for a long time, hopefully never.
