At a recent parade, I sat directly opposite a NYSP Trooper on a traffic post.
EACH and EVERY time, the stars and stripes passed by, he saluted with the most crisp salute I have ever seen. Many of the bystanders commented on it as well...all were impressed by his actions.
    Well Done Trooper, remain safe.

Yes, you are correct, but the man asked a simple question, what is so wrong with that??
Well it also comes down to needing it to be Blue like the rest of their equipment. Mark, maybe you can strike a deal for this apparatus that is already painted blue, and has a pump! It's not that old, although you may have a problem trying to get the department to sell it LOL!!

I am a person with a college diploma and am currently pursuing a fire career and I can honestly say that my college degree is only worth the paper that its printed on. Too many people stress college for everything now-a-days and dont realize that it may not be for everyone.
I got a degree because i felt that it was what was expected of me and honestly, I didn't learn much at all. All of my skills in the business world were taught to me at my current job and were learned on the fly. Very rarely, if ever, do I come across an obsticle in my job and revert back to my schooling.
With that said, I do feel that certain fields, such as Medical, Teaching, and Engineering are very technical and do rely heavily on schooling, but others, such as Business, Trades(electrical, construction, plumbing, ect) and Emergency Services are all about the kind of person you are by nature and on the job trainning and experiance.
Also, Common Sense, a vital skill that many people are lacking, cannot be taught at any college or trade school.
This is only one person's opinion, I apologize if I offended anyone.

Thank you for your opinion however we have specific policies dealing with IA's and they are what are to be followed.
Inappropriate IA's are removed by the staff as they are encountered. If you read an IA and consider it inappropriate, use the "REPORT" button to flag it for a more expeditious staff review.

Bright lights, paeticularly LED create a halo at night around the vehicle..anyone standing in that halo are in immediate danger of not being seen and possibly getting struck, no matter how many reflective vests or chevron decals they have on their gear!
WE NEED TO STOP SPEC'ING, ORDERING, AND BUYING STUFF JUST BECAUSE WE WANT TO HAVE THE BEST IN OUR AREA (or self percieved best)!
Times are tough for all of us, taxpayers especially - we need to respect them (which by the way, is US!) and manage our (their) money more wisely. Streamline the apparatus...skip the useless chrome bell and fancy paint jobs...simplify...

Guys - just remember, that one of the main reasons so many of the local fire photogs stopped posting pics here is for posts like these. Images capture one MILLISECOND in time at an incident that is typically very busy. What you very well may be seeing is a guy putting his helmet down to take safety glasses out of the crown (common place to put them), then popping it right back on...could have been stung by a bee...anythinG!
It is not always perfect, textbook operations on a fire scene, you do what needs to be done to save lives and property. If you have a problem with something in a picture, make a note of it, and make sure YOUR guys don't do it...use it as a learning experience.
It is NOT our place to second guess the members actions in public, well, unless of course you work for Firefighter Close Calls..
I am glad the Chief posted above - clears up some questions. And let me clarify, I was not MMQ'ing the FAST decision, I was adding MY opinion. As a fireman who routinely operates without the added benefit of a deidcated FASTeam, it is something I feel is very important. Someday I hope to work to fix that on our end....
Good to see RM in action to boot!

It is true for the most part, but, not that I agree that their lighting is effective enough, but that it just my opinion.
I am a fan of blinkies, don't get my wrong, but even I think the rear of this vehicle is overkill.
That being said, the install itself does appear clean, and well done, as is usual with SWS!!!

Must be nice to have the money to spend on excessive amounts of lights. Hopefully this department first spent money on equipment and necessary safety equipment first before wasting it on the lights. Correct me if I am wrong but don't Michigan state police have a very simple light package with busy interstates and have very limited emergency vehicle scene crashes. Its too bad joe taxpayer has no idea what a majority of these fire districts waste there money on while departments that are cash deprived cant even staff an adequate amount of fire personnel daily.
  15. xfirefighter484x liked a post in a topic by Dean Wilkinson in Essex-Windsor EMS, 2011 Chev Crestline Fleetmax Ambulances

Essex-Windsor EMS is a third service municipal (county) EMS service providing EMS to the City of Windsor (Ontario), the County of Essex and Pelee Island. Operating 35 ambulances and 15 support vehicles from 12 stations, our 275 medics responded to 48,000 calls (95% 911) in 2010. In addition, since we employ dynamic deployment, we had 37,000 station relocations and street corner postings. We recently took delivery of 3 - 2011 Chev Crestline Fleetmax Ambulances. Features include all exterior and interior Whelen LED lighting, ATSR multiplexed electrical system, ATSR ECORUN, ATSR AVL/GPS and a diesel hot air heater to provide supplemental heat to the patient compartment. These are our first vehicles to be equipped with the ATSR multiplexed electrical system and ECORUN. A study of vehicle idling time showed our vehicles to be idling 38% of their engine operating time. ECORUN manages vehicle idling time by monitoring battery voltage and interior temperatures and shutting down the vehicle engine when voltage and temperature are within preset parameters, while still allowing vehicle emergency and interior lighting, radios, etc to operate. If voltage and/or temperature fall out of preset parameters, ECORUN restarts the engine and runs until voltage and/or temperature return to within parameters. Diesel here is currently around $4.50 per gallon US. It is estimated if we were to put ECORUN on our entire fleet, we would save between $50,000 to $60,000 US annually in fuel costs.

Your comment is foolish, asinine, moronic, and not very thought out. To blame a Department for giving the black eye instead of the individual. That eye has been beaten by so many people over the history of the fire service it is never going away. Who ever blames the Department should look into there own closet and examine there skeletons before blaming the Sleepy Hollow Fire Department for this. I am sure you all have a few things that are in there that never made the news or bought to the attention of the police.

Yes I am a member of Sleepy Hollow Fire Department. Trent if you meet him before this incident was very active here; you never expected this from him. But he has been accused of committing the most heinous crime a firefighter can commit do I feel hurt and betrayed. Yes I do. Do I stand by my Department of course I do and will always. I am proud of my Chiefs and Officers and fellow Firefighters who help keep Sleepy Hollow safe.

Member of Sleepy Hollow Fire Department and Damn Proud of it!!!!

I also agree...driving east on the Arterial in Poughkeepsie the other night leaving work, I spotted chevrons a few blocks away, very noticeable. Once I caught up, it was an ambulance from the Arlington FD. I initially was not a fan of chevrons, but they have grown on me...and now I see just how attention grabbing they really are.

I was reading the 2011 FDNY Medal Day awards book, http://www.nyc.gov/html/fdny/pdf/publications/medal_day/2011/FDNY%20Medal%20Day%202011%20Book%20Final%20June%208%202011.pdf and saw a reoccurring trend, the importance of the Can man in most all of these rescues.
I think it goes without saying that 2.5 gallons of water, in the right hands can have a substantial effect on fires, but for those of us who don't utilize a can regularly, I would love to hear some pointers, tips, and tricks from those of you who do please.
Such as, when holding a fire in a room, where is the best place to direct the stream? Shorts blasts or open it up? Tips on door control, etc.
I know in my area, the can is under utlilized, and I think it is out of fear honestly. Not many IC's or officers are willing to see the can as an effective means of suppression...I usually have a 6 foot hook and a can with me when i go in buildings for alarms, inside smoke, etc...but i KNOW if we roll up on a reported room and contents and I walk up with a PW, I will be told to leave it and take a line...which can create a delay in suppression as I can enter and hold it with the can until a line is stretched by other members.
Don't be afraid to post up, MANY of us do listen and remember, and even sometimes apply.
    Thanks.

    Great images.
What I can't get over is the caviler attitude of the "victims" who put themselves in this position. Only complicated by two additional "victims" adding to the dangers faced by rescuers. It's a shame there is such a lack of personal responsibility and common sense.

I apologize for the long post....... The photos tell the whole story that's why I'm posting so many...........
The New Hackensack Fire Department, Town of Wappinger/TransCare Medics, and the Dutchess County Sheriffs Office were dispatched for a "16yr old female that had fallen with a knee injury and is hemorrhaging on the bank of the Wappingers creek in the rear of 37 Helen Dr". Personnel arrived to find the injured female along with two others, one of which had a foot laceration, perched on a group of rocks in the middle of the creek. They were unable to make it back to shore due to their injuries, the strong currents, and the sharp and slippery rocks that lined their path back to shore.....As crews arrived and assessed the situation, the father of one of the girls as well as another friend of the girls, swam out to be with the original three now leaving firefighters with 5 people stranded in the middle of the creek. Due to the injuries to the two females and their location in the middle of the creek, the decision was made to abandon a simpler rescue and to request the assistance of the Arlington FD and their Swift Water Rescue Team (SWRT) in bringing everybody safely back to shore......

Initial personnel make their way down to the creek.....

The initial three girls in the middle of the creek.....

Suprise..... Without the knowledge or approval of the rescuers, the father of one of the three girls goes into the water......

and with difficulty, makes it to their location.... A short time later, another female would do the same thing leaving 5 individuals that needed to be brought back to shore....

A DCSO Deputy and TransCare Medic discuss the situation.....

With one safety line in place, crews wait for the arrival of AFD's Swift Water Rescue Team.....

    AFD's SWRT makes the scene......

Did you order ten pepperoni pizzas? NKFD Fire Police father and son team Bernie and Doug Roe carry in the SWRT's inflatable raft.

AFD's SWRT members inflate the raft......

Time to move the raft down the narrow and rocky path to the shore...
