  1. Well, keep in mind that this was a demo rig... But you're right, Stamford's HME's don't usually have a Q. Currently SFRD has 3 Sutphens in their fleet, and they each have a Q... (Tower 1, Truck 3 and Truck 4). Also Engine 12 and Rescue 2 (Mack) have a Q and Rescue 1 has an EQ2B.
  2. Portable Band-Saw (Milwaukee makes the best, Porter Cable's is ok too...) I have used this tool in non-emergency settings more times than I can remember. It makes very clean cuts, and doesn't shake the heck out of the work-piece like a Sawzall or throw off sparks like a cutting wheel. The only thing to keep in mind is that this tool does have a "throat", so you can only cut materials around 4" deep and the cut material can then become "trapped" inside the tool if there is pressure on the area that you just cut. I can definitely see how this tool would be an excellent addition to the cutting tools usually found on a Heavy Rescue. Many tool rental places have them for rent, if you ever want to try one out before committing to buy.
  3. I was also at the FTC on Sunday, walked by a group around 1230 and there was a woman among them
  4. Being that I was a junior at Boston University and had no classes till 10 or 11 that morning, I was fast asleep in my dorm room at 0846. My mom called and told me to turn on the TV, that a plane had struck one of the Towers... I immediately woke up my room-mate Doug and we turned on the TV only to see the second tower get struck. Seemingly within minutes a convoy of black Suburbans and Crown Vics went racing past our window heading down Storrow Drive to Logan Airport, while soon after on the other side of the building the flow of people evacuating the Prudential Tower and John Hancock buildings became evident. I'm not sure exactly what time I found out about Chris Mello, the first Rye resident that I heard about having perished that day, but thats when the reality really set in. The phrase "Never Forget" is tossed around a lot, and for good reason. Much like our parents and grandparents remember where they were when they heard about JFK, it will not be possible for us to forget that Tuesday morning when the whole world changed.

For those who forgot/don't know: New Ladder truck for the City of Rye Fire Dept. 100-foot Seagrave Rearmount, no pump, no water. Expected delivery by end of summer '07. New Truck will become L25 when it goes in service, and the current L25 will become L26. 9. I've been to Mavis in both Port Chester and Mt. Kisco with no problems. As far as the pads, unless you are seriously upgrading your whole brake system, any "name brand" will do you fine.
  10. Update! Rye FD personnel have just returned from Seagrave in Wisconsin and the new Ladder 25 should be at Excelsior next week... CLICK HERE FOR STORY AND PICS Note: The aerial tip is being re-painted a brighter orange and the lense on the flashing light on the tip will be changed to blue... other than that not too many major changes have to be made before delivery! Stay tuned for pictures of the new rig fully striped and lettered some time next month.
  11. If there's no warranty, or if you don't want to be on the phone with India for 3 hours, send it to these guys: http://www.laptopguy.com/ Very reasonable rates and good customer service/shipping... I used them and was very satisfied. They had been running a promotion in connection with Sirius/Howard Stern but I forget what the promo code was...
  12. Good thing Art's not the lead singer, every verse would end with "648 at [time]" ... ok maybe dispatcher humor isn't for everyone ...but seriously I imagine your drum kit is decked out in LED's?

  15. Date: 8/1/07 Time: 1220 (Time Rye FD dispatched) Location: Mead Pond (Click here for satellite image) Units Operating City of Rye: E191, L25, RPD Port Chester/Rye/Rye Brook EMS WCDES Car 2001 WCHD Spill Response Stiloski's Automotive Heavy Recovery Writer: 242steve (O/S) CLICK HERE FOR PHOTOS AND VIDEO (The pics are in reverse order, so start at the end of Page 3 ) Click here for preliminary Journal News article (x2321 was on scene, so keep an eye out for his photos) At 1220 on August 1, 2007, Engine 191 and Ladder 25 were dispatched to a reported car into the water in Mead Pond, off of Mead Pond Road. Upon arrival, units found that the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, had already been removed to dry land by two contractors who witnessed his car plunge into the murky water. The driver was evaluated by Port Chester/Rye/Rye Brook EMS. Knowing that the driver was safe, Ladder 25 quickly returned to service while Engine 191 and additional volunteer personnel remained on scene to monitor the water around the half-submerged Volvo and ensure that no gasoline, oil or other potentially hazardous fluids were leaking into the pond. Peter Pitocco (Car 2001), Chief of Special Operations of the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services, also responded to the scene along with representatives from the Westchester County Health Department Spill Response Team. While there was no leakage or any other significant ecological damage, this incident proved particularly tricky when it came to physically removing the vehicle from the pond. The car was about 8 feet from the shore and there was a stone wall with a 2-foot drop between the nearest driveway and the backyard area adjacent to the car. Stiloski's Automotive, from Tarrytown, NY, was called to the scene with their 75-ton Heavy Recovery Crane, while a contractor who was already working at the car-owner's home used a skid-steer loader to build a dirt ramp from the driveway area to the base of the stone wall. After several hours, the water-logged station wagon was recovered from the pond, and all units cleared the scene around 1730.
  16. Yes, for several years that is exactly what happened. Now we don't have a tiller anymore, and we are completely dispatched by 60-Control.
  17. City of Rye: 1 Career LT/Fire Inspector, Monday-Friday schedule 16 Career Firefighters, 4 Workgroups, 24-on/72-off schedule Minimum staffing at any time under normal conditions is 3 men on duty. (There are no female Career FF's at this time) When at minimum staffing E-191, E-192 and L-25 each have one man assigned, and respond upon dispatch (Volunteer members and the 3 volunteer chiefs respond to the scene.) 20. 0 dollars, Bob. Oh, wrong show... August 31, 2007 @ 2359
  21. Was he stupid/wrong... yes. But so is that woman for suing. If she "Didn't know about the sirens" then she should be going after the real estate agent. Arnold Diaz should do a "Shame On You" piece on himself for the way he treats his neighbors. Trust me, I did a lot of work on the house right next to his, no thanks to him and his influence on the Architectural Board of Review  What a sleaze-bag.
  22. I hope the Maxim collectors out there know that behind the 1985 Spartan cab is a 1955 Maxim Aerial... Hopefully whoever buys the old 26 will know how many fires that aerial has seen and all the history that is there. This makes me miss the tiller, but also makes me more anxious for the new truck!
  23. Alligator sighting in Ossining draws DEC By SHAWN COHEN THE JOURNAL NEWS (Original Publication: July 24, 2007) OSSINING - An alligator in Ossining? Wildlife experts from the state Department of Environmental Conservation were headed to the scene, expected to arrive about 3 p.m. That's after a Consolidated Edison worker called police about 11 a.m. today after reportedly seeing the head of a 3-foot gator poking out of a private pond off Somerstown Road. "He was sitting beside a tree and he ran into the water," said Aaron McDuffie, a flagger. "They (other workers) didn't want to believe me at first, this being Westchester, but they walked over and saw him in the water." He said even he's in disbelief. "With the cold climate, to see an alligator in the water? I didn't want to believe it when I first saw it." Ossining police are at the site, searching for the reptile, but so far haven't seen anything, Officer William Thomas said shortly after noon. This may be a case of mistaken identity, but no one knows for sure at this time. Jim Horton of Qualitypro Test and Wildlife Services in Hawthorne was in a rowboat, searching for the alligator, poking the bottom of the algae-covered pond with a pole. He said he thinks its a Cayman alligator. "They were legal to buy a few years ago," he said. "They grow too big and people let them go." He said he's not scared that the reptile will bite if he finds it. "He's more afraid of us than we are of him," he said. "That's why he took off and he's hiding on us." Mario Velardo, standing on the shore of the pond, threw a giant hook attached to a rope into the water, using raw chicken as bait. "I have some chicken. I don't know, if the alligator is hungry, hopefully he'll eat it," said Velardo, with the Ossining Town Parks Department. Check LoHud for updates.
  24. I believe the $1 ticket at the City Center is only for movies that have been playing for at least 2 weekends prior to the day that you go...
  25. Went by American Gun and Uniform in Elmsford today only to find a hand-written "CLOSED" sign on the door, and the shelves that are visible from street level were empty... Postal carrier who was passing by said they've been shut for a while... Anyone know if its for good or have they just relocated?
