  1. Can someone please check NFPA 1971 and see if structural helmets are rated to protect your brains against being eaten by Zombies?
  2. It was an explosion of flavor that confused the taste buds. Note: This was after a few frosty adult beverages. ...basically an interesting novelty, but not something I would eat more than once every... year? if ever again.
  3. My friend who is a prepared foods manager at a high-end grocery store is making one of these on Saturday. I will not say what store, so that he isn't over-run by hungry firefighters/medics/officers! While we are on the topic of gluttony, I made "Luther Burgers" last Friday night. In case you don't know... A Luther Burger is a hamburger or cheeseburger, with bacon, with a sliced Krispy Kreme glazed donut in place of a bun. Goes great with a Lipitor, straight up.
  4. There have been a few previous discussions about this... but to answer your basic question: A true Quint has a pump, water tank, fire hose, aerial device, and ground ladders. (Five things... Quint... get it?) Then you get into what NFPA says is a Quint, what your county says is a Quint, what your department... you get the idea. Quint can also refer to:
  5. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&amp...264702&z=12 Check it out... shows drink specials, and also which bars are Steelers- or Cardinals-friendly.
  6. The house looks kinda T-shaped... and now that I look at it more and am more awake I am changing my estimate to 150x75 , but yes there are some huge houses "north of the parkway".
  7. From some photos I saw, it was a large private dwelling, I would estimate 150x75 (changed from original gargantuan estimate of 100x200) but the pics might be deceiving, appeared to be a Tudor style, stucco/wood frame. Long/narrow shared driveway put the fire building about 1000 feet from the main road (not that there are any wet hydrants nearby) Stay tuned to www.stamfordfirepix.com for photos from EMTBravo member psd8109 who was O/S.
  8. Tankers operating: Long Ridge 73 (Pumper/Tanker) Long Ridge 78 Turn of River 68 Pound Ridge 3 (Westchester County, NY) Banksville 7 (Westchester County, NY) New Canaan 8 Greenwich (Round Hill) 6 Noroton Heights 22 Belltown Engine 41 covering Long Ridge Station 1, and responded to MVA (Car over guard-rail) on Long Ridge Road around 0645.
  9. Having worked on Huntington Ave just down the street from E37/L26/D5, and being associated with another "L26" this incident really hits home and makes me feel even worse than I already do when I hear of a LODD. Condolences to all who were affected. I wish a full and speedy recovery to the injured FF's.
  10. Got my quarter sleeve done by Dave Wallin at Tattoo Culture in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He is a truly talented artist- did a totally custom one-of-a-kind design for me and I completely love it. I am definitely returning to him for the next piece(s).
  11. Stamford 9-1-1 Worked from 1500 yesterday till 0300 this morning. Curled up in my sleeping bag for a bit. Back since 0700 till 1500. ...still have not had a cup of coffee in my life! (Double-bagging the Lipton, though!) Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and All the Best to Everyone! 242steve a.k.a. 22026
  12. As I have done in years past, just wanted to send out an extra special holiday "shout-out" to everyone who is working tonight/tomorrow! Hope everyone has an easy shift.
  13. I have generally stayed out of these types of topics... but... why is "BS" which is short for "bull[feces]" any better than "WTF" which is arguably short for various things? Quite frankly if someone told me my post was "BS" I would be just as offended as if they asked "WTF are you talking about?" I pose this as an academic question, and not to incite a virtual riot.
  14. I am not going to beat a badly bleeding horse, nor do I wish to contribute to this thread veering off topic, but do some searching of old threads and you will find multiple valid answers to your latter question.
  15. Full Story: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081218/ap_on_...itan_protection "Due Care", "Due Regard", "Negligence", etc. have all been discussed in various training classes that I have attended, and I was always under the impression that in a situation like the one mentioned in the article, civilians that come to the aid of other civilians are not considered to have a "duty" of any kind. In this case, the Court seems to be saying that pulling someone from a car wreck does not qualify as "administering emergency medical care". While WE (EmergServ Workers) know when it is appropriate to pull someone from a car without full patient stabilization (Car fire, car on train tracks, etc.), how was this woman supposed to know whether or not her fear of an explosion was valid? I just hope that, if the suit progresses, the "jury of peers" will consider what they would do if they came across a friend in a mangled car and they strongly felt that pulling that friend from the car would increase said friend's chanced of survival. Edit: Just watched an ABC News video clip about this story also, and the victim is quoted as saying "I would have been better off if you had not tried to help me." While that might technically be true, hindsight is always 20/20.

  17. PCFD HQ is on Westchester Ave at Poningo St From Right to Left, as you look at the front of the building, there is a single bay with E-58 (Career Engine) in front of E-60 (Reliance). Then there is a double bay with TL-2 and L-31 (Harry Howard). Then another single bay houses R-40 (Fire Patrol& Rescue) Watching them back R-40 into that bay is like watching James Bond defusing the nuke in Goldfinger, or playing the game "Operation"... don't touch the sides! Edit: Didn't see Jared's post before I posted.
  18. Interesting concept... sort of like going with a totally custom built fire apparatus instead of one built on a commercial cab/chassis. I guess the theory is sort of "Why retro-fit a large RWD sedan when you can buy something made from the wheels up for the specific purpose?" ...of course there are the questions of availability of parts, qualified mechanics, etc. that will need to be easily answered if Carbon wants to make this work. I wonder if Ford (and to a lesser degree Dodge and Chevy) will have any official reaction to this? With the "Big 3" money problems (to put it mildly) I would think that they will see this as yet another threat to their financial well-being... I would also be curious to see how much money Crown Vic police fleet sales contribute to Ford's bottom line every year.
  19. Ok, well I was wondering what route Ladder 19 might take if the Pelham and Hutch bridges were both open... Slight detour into Westchester County!! <--- Click there.
  20. Full Story: http://www.stamfordadvocate.com/ci_11135080 Kudos to all involved!
  21. Which machines are going to carry these? I would think E7, E8 and E9 at least, since they respond first-due to "non-hydrant" areas... Anyone have the official word?
  22. I guess that wasn't a case of arriving at the box and wondering where the fire is!
  23. I thought Class A/B/C/etc. was decided by school population? Does the current 8th grade class at RMS have an unusual amount of kids?
