  2. I understand all sides in this. I personally am on the fence about it. I do not think it is something that should be left in public eye and advertised but with that said, the Chief using Facebook is probably harmless. The same can be said for departments that issue smartphones...a Chief can access Facebook on that. I don't think it is a huge issue, but it is best to close the computer or at minimum minimize the window. Like NY10570 said, I would not use the computers for personal things since I would not want the department following my every step.

  4. Actually the reason is extremely important. As a society we've long established mitigating circumstances and intent are pertinent. Clearly the act of dealing drugs is not justification for shooting someone. Its a big difference if she bought that gun to kill him and was lying in wait or if she had the gun, reached her wits end and snapped. The result is the same but the penalty is going to be much different.

What would be the penalty if she purchased the gun to kill him? Why would the penalty be if she snapped and killed him?

  6. BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A 74-year-old Michigan grandmother was charged with shooting dead her 17-year-old grandson as he made a frantic call to 911.
Police said that when they arrived at her home in Bloomfield Township, she answered the door still holding the weapon and told officers she had just "murdered her grandson."

Malone, Saranac Lake and Brasher-Winthrop fire departments sent aerial trucks to the scene. A State of emergency was declared due to the fires central location and proximity to adjacent structures including a NYSP headquarter and a Post Office. Firefighters took a defensive approach to keep the fire from spreading to the rest of the block and surrounding buildings. 8. Since the statewide spring ban on residential brush burning in smaller communities went into effect in 2010, there has been a 60 percent reduction in wildfires

    http://northcountrynow.com/news/state-reports-60-percent-decline-wildfires-brush-burning-ban-started-2010-058247

I wonder how much the percentage would rise if farmers were not allowed to burn brush for farming needs.

  9. Potsdam Fire Department and Potsdam Rescue Squad held a mock DWI drill at the Potsdam Central School campus for students to watch. Story and pictures found on Potsdamfire.org.

On May 23, 2012 at approximately 0845hrs. the Potsdam Volunteer Fire Department and Potsdam Rescue Squad responded to a reported 2 vehicle head-on motor vehicle accident with serious injuries and entrapment. Units arrived on scene and found one person ejected from a vehicle, and two additional persons trapped in the wreckage.

I think that these are a great tool and send a powerful message to kids, more of these should be conducted at local school. Even if they stop one person from driving while intoxicated, it is a big success.

  10. To add to this, be sure to retire the colors properly. DO NOT just dispose of them when they become torn and or tattered. I know at least Boy Scout Troop 49 in Ossining and your local VFW's, etc. are always willing to accept flags in need of retirement. I know the BSA Troop 49 will for sure host a retirement ceremony at some point or another. I can't tell you how many times I've approached random people flying flags that are torn half to shreds. I find it to be disrespectful.

The Post Office in Pleasantville has a flag drop box out front.

  11. How are the tip up lights going to save money?

No one said the tip up light is going to save money... What was said is that the warning light on the center console that lets the operator know that the tip up light is erect will. If the light serves its purpose then no one will drive under the sunnyside ave bridge with the tip up lights up.

  13. This may sound like a "newbe" or rather "Probie" question, but what is the purpose of the tip up light bars?

The tip up light bars are fairly new and still quite uncommon in this area. Actually, I would feel safe saying that the new 2371 is the only FD vehicle in the county that has one.... if I'm wrong then...sorry. The tip up light bars are now widely used in the city. They help with visibility in traffic since they can be seen over most any vehicle (exception if box trucks).

  14. Id have to assume this replaced that 90's suburban they had running around

We have two of the old suburban. One is U74 and one is (was) 2373. The old 2373 is now the "new" U74. The new 2371 did not replace a vehicle, it just shifted them down a number.

  15. Pleasantville Rescue 47 took the place of Patrol 7. The truck is maintained and manned by the Pleasantville Fire Patrol company. The county disbanded the designation of patrol and the new truck was given the designation as Rescue 47. It is a rescue pumper but there is no such county designation for such a truck. There is talk of trying to switch to squad but, like Helicopper said, this had staffing/training requirements and may not be possible.

I agree with the idea of redoing designations so that they are more accurate. This is an issue state-wide...probably even country-wide. For example, some places use tanker to designate trucks that are actually tenders and have a pump or don't have a pump. Other counties use pumper tanker for tenders with pumps and tanker for tenders without pumps. Some counties use Rescue as the designation for a utility suburban or CFR response vehicle. Organizing and unifying it a bit would definitely be nice.
