While a Quint certainly costs more to purchase than an Engine, it's hardly a noticeable line item on a city budget. The cost of a piece of apparatus can be averaged out over it's 10-15 year lifespan and when you break it down that way, it's pretty cheap. What costs money is men, unfortunately for the bean counters, manpower is the only thing that can effect a rescue or put a fire out. Going to a Quint, as opposed to a traditional Engine/Truck model, saves money while sacrificing capabilities. This isn't to say that Quints are a bad idea. They're appropriate for certain situations, such as a volunteer organization.
The piece of apparatus that a company rides in does not define that company. What defines them is the job that they perform at the fire or other emergency. When you have a Quint, you have a rig that's sort of an engine and sort of a ladder, but what will it be when it arrives? Are it's members going to search for survivors and vent or are they going to extinguish the fire?
A quint is a way to cut staff thus cutting the budget and create some illusion of continued firefighting capabilities. In reality, you've cut the number of men and exchanged two precise tools for one half-assed hybrid. Your firefighting abilities are considerably hampered and, sadly, the public is non-the-wiser.

How about, what are the roles of a VAC officer? If it is just to push paper then there is no reason for the training. PCR review can easily be delegated to an EMT. Now if your VAC officer is going to functioning like a counterpart in fire or PD then an EMT card is just the beginning of what they should be required to have. Which agencies require more than just an EMT card? If you're going to be managing the medical branch of an MCI, your EMT card and few years of teching are not going to cut it.

Army Specialist David R. Fahey, Jr. was killed on February 28, 2011 at the age of 23 while serving in Afghanistan. Fahey was assigned to the 170th Military Police Company, 504th Military Police Battalion, 42nd Military Police Brigade, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.
One Monday, March 7, 2011, his body was brought by motorcade to his hometown of Yorktown, NY. The Pleasantville FD, Hawthrone FD, Valhalla FD, and Thornwood FD, payed tribute to the fallen hero by using TFD TL1 and PFD TL5 to hoist a flag over the Taconic State Parkway.

Interesting article about the responders. I posted it in the thread about the crash, but felt it worthy of it's own discussion.

*Disclaimer: These are questions, do not read into them. They are not meant to offend or insult anyone. Kleenex will not be provided.*
Since I moved to Texas three years ago, I've lost touch with some things.
With people mentioning Pelham as a Westchester location near the bus crash, it led me to thinking I have no idea what the EMS situation is anymore.
I worked 38-A-1 in Pelham around 1998'ish, and we were stationed out of the Pelham firehouse. We had radios for all emergency agencies in Pelham, and were dispatched by 60 Control and Empress Central communications.
Last I knew, EMS was provided via single medic flycar, which was a 200? Chevrolet/614 Custom. It was owned by Pelham, but staffed by Empress EMS. They were stationed at the DPW yard in Pelham Manor. They would respond to a call and start care, and depend on an ambulance from Empress's SSM system. I'm not sure how or who dispatched.
So, that's the last I knew. What is the current EMS delivery model in Pelham?
Also, Rescue 45 would respond on all Pelham Village EMS calls, and was designed to take wear and tear off Pelham's at the time hurting fleet. Has Rescue 45 been replaced, or is the same car still running? Same question for the 38-M-1 vehicle?

Ive read this post many times and I still fail to see the reason for posting it but it most certainly requires a response.
From what I know of you, you have no background in Law Enforcement so your ideas of how cops should feel about being cops and what they should do on duty may be how it is in a perfect world but in reality thats not how it works. This would be like me who knows nothing of fire fighting making critical observations about the fire service and putting all over the post " No offense guys" and " this is not a knock to firefighters".
As far as I've seen, you're the only member on here from texas so you are the only one who could answer your own question of " why are police officers down here so different ?"
I've been a cop for 12 years and I go balls to the wall every day I go into work as do most cops I know. Would it be nice to follow up with every crime victim we deal with ? Yes but we don't have the time or the manpower to do that stuff. How do you know that cops up here don't know their post as well as cops in Texas ?
Cops are in a unique situation to be cross trained in rescue, where as FD's can't be trained in law enforcement specific things... thats just the way it is.
You ask why is there competition ? There always has and always will be competiton in the emergency services and it's healthy to a degree.
You ask why are there not more hudson river patrols ? There are in the summer but not so much in the winter but what does one thing have to do with the other ?
The bottom line is that expanding the scope of your working capabilities means more job security and possibly more state and federal funding.
The biggest difference between cops up here and cops in texas is that maybe cops in texas enjoy a lot more community support than cops in the north east get.

No, he was off. Ironically, he and R1's Captain looked at the scaffold the other day and pre-planned it. But neither were working. The man who went down on the rope, FF Mike Giroux is one of the best. He has trained extensively with the YFD, the FDNY Rescue and others and is well thought of by our members.

First off, my prayers for a speed recovery for the injured Paramedic.
Saw this article today and found it interesting. This is a problem that can happen in any downtown area where skyscrapers are. My question is this...Who is liable for injuries/damages caused from ice? I would assume that it would fall onto the owner of the skyscraper but that is just an assumption. I mean is it possible that the building owner is responsible for having the ice cleaned off the side of the buildings? How could this be done without the ice falling to the ground?
Leads me to believe he is worried about the buildings owner being held liable...

A few shots from the exposure.... exposure.... which side would you call this?
These shots don't do the LDH lays justice. There's a LOT of hose out there to be picked up. Glad everyone is OK!

They should have fixed spelling...rookie mistake!
I like how it says "We will not stop until Mr Hess is held accountable for killing our beloved DJ." Shut up...your beloved DJ tried to use his car as a weapon and kill or injury our beloved cops (and good friends)!
I understand that this is a hard time for the family and friends of DJ and his death is a tragedy since he is just a kid, but the family and friends of DJ need to move on...cops eliminate deadly force with deadly force. They will not just stand around while their lives or their fellow Officers lives are at risk.
Instead of putting all blame on the cops, blame DJ and his terrible decision to drink and drive while not intoxicate but s***faced.
Smart people make stupid decisions, but so do stupid people. From what I heard about DJ's grades...he is not the genius, his friends and family made him out to be.
It is a shame that this all happened and that DJ's family lost a son, but now it is time to continue on with this nightmare journey and get to the end of it.
RIP DJ...thankfully because you are doing so, our Police Officers are not.

I think this soldier deserves more consideration from our membership, so I just want to point out here on the board, that Mr. Buckles was THE LAST American left on this earth to have served in World War I. Maybe we'll get more clicks on the article and more comments.
We as a nation have gone so far from the dark days of the early twentieth century when our countrymen experienced so much hardship. From incomprehensible casualties and the cruelty of chemical weapons and trench warfare that was the horror of World War I, to terrible times back here in the Motherland of a collapsed economy, and people migrating all over through "The Grapes of Wrath", homeless and hungry until they reached a soup kitchen.
110 years for Mr. Buckles. He witnessed all of the twentieth century, served our country, and became a symbol of the gallant and brave young men America sent overseas to fight and die for a better world.
Rest in Peace Sir, you earned it many many decades ago.

I have something that is worth posting here and is something I want all of you to read and really think about. This was forwarded to me by a friend. This was written by Meriden, CT, Battalion Chief Burdick.
These are words that I whole heartily beleive in and held true in my profession being a firefighter, from the time I started volunteering my service to my present career in the fire services. Next time when you use the term "Brotherhood" stop and think about it for a second and ask yourself how you use the term, live up to your actions, consider your self part of the Brotherhood. I see the term used often here, but are you truly in the brotherhood?
    Just think.

One of the guys e-mailed this to me separately earlier today. I found them funny and amusing and having served in a number of volunteer departments over the years, I could, and I'm sure most everyone could, find a corresponding member(s) in their own department to compare this crew to.
