  1. ...ICE STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM THURSDAY TO 1 PM EST FRIDAY... AN ICE STORM WARNING FOR SIGNIFICANT ICING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM THURSDAY TO 1 PM EST FRIDAY. SIGNIFICANT ICE ACCUMULATION IS EXPECTED ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST CATSKILLS...THE MID HUDSON VALLEY...CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN TACONICS...BERKSHIRE COUNTY AND LITCHFIELD COUNTY...WITH GENERALLY ONE HALF TO ONE INCH OF ICING. SOME AREAS MAY RECEIVE ONE AND A QUARTER INCH OF ICE ACCUMULATION. THIS AMOUNT OF ICE WOULD RESULT IN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ROAD CONDITIONS...AS WELL AS WIDESPREAD POWER OUTAGES. A MIX OF SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN WILL START THURSDAY MORNING... BECOMING HEAVIER IN INTENSITY THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING. THERE COULD BE SOME PLAIN RAIN MIXED IN DURING THE DAYLIGHT HOURS ON THURSDAY ACROSS SOME OF THE WARMER VALLEY LOCATIONS...ALTHOUGH MOST AREAS WILL EXPERIENCE ENTIRELY FROZEN PRECIPITATION FOR THE DURATION OF THE STORM. FREEZING RAIN...HEAVY AT TIMES...WILL FALL ACROSS THE WARNING AREA THURSDAY NIGHT INTO FRIDAY MORNING. THIS IS THE TIME PERIOD WHEN THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ICING WILL OCCUR. IN NORTHERN AREAS OF THE WARNING...SUCH AS GREENE...COLUMBIA... AND NORTHERN BERKSHIRE COUNTY...SLEET WILL MIX IN AT TIMES. SOME SLEET ACCUMULATION WILL OCCUR...IN ADDITION TO THE SIGNIFICANT ICING DUE TO FREEZING RAIN. MIXED PRECIPITATION WILL CHANGE TO SNOW FRIDAY MORNING BEFORE ENDING...WITH A FEW INCHES OF SNOW POSSIBLE IN ADDITION TO THE SIGNIFICANT ICING. LOW PRESSURE WILL DEVELOP IN THE SOUTHEASTERN U.S. TONIGHT...AND TRACK NORTHEAST ON THURSDAY TO THE MID ATLANTIC REGION...ALONG A STALLED FRONTAL BOUNDARY. THURSDAY NIGHT INTO FRIDAY MORNING... THE LOW WILL TRACK FROM ALONG THE NEW JERSEY COAST TO THE EASTERN TIP OF LONG ISLAND...THEN TO MAINE BY FRIDAY AFTERNOON. THE STORM WILL DRAW PLENTY OF MOISTURE FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO...RESULTING IN A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF WINTRY PRECIPITATION. AN ICE STORM WARNING MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF ICE ACCUMULATIONS WILL MAKE TRAVEL DANGEROUS OR IMPOSSIBLE. TRAVEL IS STRONGLY DISCOURAGED. COMMERCE WILL LIKELY BE SEVERELY IMPACTED. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL...KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT...FOOD...AND WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY. ICE ACCUMULATIONS AND WINDS WILL LIKELY LEAD TO SNAPPED POWER LINES AND FALLING TREE BRANCHES THAT ADD TO THE DANGER.
  2. It is also going to be on at some other times during the days following the original air time. If you go onto the Science Channel website you can see the other times.
  3. .. WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING... THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN ALBANY HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WATCH FOR EAST CENTRAL NEW YORK... SOUTHERN VERMONT... WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS AND NORTHWESTERN CONNECTICUT... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING. POTENTIAL LIQUID EQUIVALENT AMOUNTS OF PRECIPITATION COULD EXCEED 1 TO 2 INCHES. THIS COULD RESULT IN OVER 7 INCHES OF SNOW... OVER A HALF INCH OF ICE... OR MORE THAN AN INCH OF SLEET BY THE TIME THE STORM ENDS FRIDAY MORNING. LOW PRESSURE WILL DEVELOP IN THE SOUTHEASTERN U.S. WEDNESDAY NIGHT... AND TRACK NORTHEAST THURSDAY TO THE MID ATLANTIC REGION... THEN BY THURSDAY NIGHT ACROSS... OR JUST EAST OF NEW ENGLAND... EVENTUALLY INTO SOUTHEASTERN CANADA FRIDAY. THE LOW PRESSURE WILL RAPIDLY STRENGTHEN AS IT TRACKS NORTHEAST... AND DRAWS IN MOISTURE FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO AND GULF STREAM BASED ON THE RANGE OF POSSIBLE TRACKS OF THE STORM... AND THE COLD AIR THAT WILL BE ENTRENCHED THROUGH MUCH OF THE DURATION OF THE STORM... HEAVY PRECIPITATION WILL FALL AS SNOW... SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN. EVEN WITH THE LOW CONFIDENCE IN THE STORM TRACK... THE STORM IS ALREADY BEGINNING TO FORM IN THE SOUTHERN PLAINS AND LOWER MISSISSIPPI RIVER VALLEY. SO... THERE IS HIGH CONFIDENCE THAT A STRONG STORM WILL FORM AND TRACK SOMEWHERE THROUGH OR JUST OFFSHORE THE NORTHEASTERN U.S. AT THIS TIME... THE BEST CHANCE FOR ALL SNOW EXISTS FROM THE ADIRONDACKS... WESTERN MOHAWK VALLEY AND SCHOHARIE VALLEY... THROUGH THE LAKE GEORGE AND SARATOGA REGIONS TO THE SOUTHERN GREEN MOUNTAINS OF VERMONT. THE BEST CHANCES FOR SIGNIFICANT ICE AND SLEET EXISTS FROM THE EASTERN CATSKILLS THROUGH THE MID HUDSON VALLEY... NORTHWESTERN CONNECTICUT AND SOUTHERN BERKSHIRES OF MASSACHUSETTS. THE NORTHERN CATSKILLS... CAPITAL DISTRICT... AND NORTHERN BERKSHIRES COULD SEE A MIX OF SNOW... SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THIS STORM IS STILL VERY EARLY IN ITS DEVELOPMENT STAGES... AND THERE IS STILL A WIDE RANGE OF POSSIBLE STORM TRACKS... THAT COULD CHANGE THE EXPECTED PRECIPITATION TYPES FOR ALL REGIONS AS THE STORM GETS CLOSER. HOWEVER... IT IS IMPORTANT FOR ALL INTERESTS TO STAY UPDATED WITH THE LATEST WEATHER INFORMATION THROUGH THURSDAY. WHATEVER REGIONS DO GET IMPACTED WITH THE SNOW... FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET... THERE WILL LIKELY BE ENOUGH PRECIPITATION TO HAVE A MAJOR IMPACT ON TRAVEL AND POTENTIALLY DAMAGE TREES AND POWER LINES. A WINTER STORM WATCH MEANS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT SNOW... SLEET... OR ICE ACCUMULATIONS THAT MAY IMPACT TRAVEL. CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE LATEST FORECASTS.
  4. If he had just invited his neighbors over for dinner, he wouldn't have been arrested.
  5. Too bad I didn't get to see it but the pictures are great.
  6. A handful a year, one of them being yesterday already.

WEST BRATTLEBORO...BELLOWS FALLS 1021 AM EST SUN NOV 30 2008 ...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 5 AM EST MONDAY... THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN ALBANY HAS ISSUED A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR A MIXTURE OF SNOW...SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN...UNTIL 5 AM EST MONDAY. A MIXTURE OF SNOW...SLEET...AND FREEZING RAIN WILL DEVELOP ACROSS THE SOUTHERN CATSKILLS...CENTRAL MOHAWK VALLEY...UPPER HUDSON VALLEY...AND WINDHAM COUNTY IN VERMONT THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. PRECIPITATION WILL BEGIN FIRST ACROSS THE SOUTHERN CATSKILLS EARLY THIS AFTERNOON...THEN SPREAD ACROSS MOHAWK VALLEY...UPPER HUDSON VALLEY AND WINDHAM COUNTY VERMONT LATER THIS AFTERNOON. INITIALLY...THE MIX WILL BE MAINLY SNOW...BUT WILL TRANSITION TO SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN LATER THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. WARMER TEMPERATURES SPREADING INTO THE AREA WILL CHANGE THE MIXED PRECIPITATION OVER TO RAIN BY EVENING. BEFORE THE CHANGEOVER TO RAIN...A MINOR COATING OF ICE AROUND A TENTH OF AN INCH IS EXPECTED. A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW...SLEET...OR FREEZING RAIN WILL CAUSE TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SLIPPERY ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES...AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING AND ALLOW EXTRA TIME TO REACH YOUR DESTINATION.
  8. Can't wait to see the rest of the photos. It looks to be a great piece of apparatus.
  9. That is taking the mutual aid agreement to the extreme. Good work Yonkers, helping out a neighbor.
  10. This is a nice looking truck. Does anyone know what the prices are compaired to their other lines? Are they more expensive or about the same?
  11. It amazes me that people get killed over some reduced price items. Just wait another few weeks and they will be going out of business and everthing will be really cheap
  12. It only applies to apparatus where the construction date is January 1, 2009 and later. It will not have to be retrofitted to old apparatus, however it may not be a bad idea. Personally I don't care what the truck looks like as long as it keeps me safer. I agree that if it saves one life or prevents a close call, it is more than worth it.
  13. Yesturday in Dave Walsh's fire science class we talked about the test and viewed a powerpoint made by ARA Safety, the company that makes the FIT 5, and on almost ever slide it says that it needs to be in an unventilated area. After watching all of the videos and seeing the pictures of the test burn, you can really tell how much the FIT dampended down the fire. If the chemical was able to stay in the room and didn't escape thought the venting window, I think it would have worked great. The test definately showed that it doesn't work in all situations. Dave also showed us another company that makes a similar device, however it is a lot cheaper. Hopefully the Fire Science Club will perform another burn and try this new device or the FIT 5 and use the knowledge that was learned from this fire to make it better.
  14. I think it is a VW Jetta from the 90's. They stopped making the model year in '98
  15. I guess what I was getting at is the amount of overtime Ulster has and will continue to save KFD will way surpass what they may spend on the automatic response.
  16. Didn't Alamo have a ambulance out of Highland station about a year ago? When I did my ride time we did a back fill there.
  17. I think the automatic responce is good. Also, it isn't for all calls in the area, it is only calls that are built as structure fires. I talked to a deputy chief of Kingston and he said that they will probably only respond a handful of times a year. Also, the amount of SF calls out there that become anything major that KFD will have to call back people on overtime definatly doesn't mach the amount of times the UH #5 goes into the city with their apparatus. I think I read that KFD called MA over 50 times one year and only went out on MA like 5 times so it isn't a bad idea to even out those numbers a little.
  18. I use a Nikon D40. It is a great camera for more everyday use. I am taking the photo class at college also and have learned to appreciate all the abilities a DSLR has over a film or regular digital camera. The D40 is 6.1 MP and it shoots great pictures. Unless you plan on really enlarging the pictures to extreme sizes, I think a 6 or 8 MP camera will do you fine. Who is your photo teacher?
  19. I went and saw it this weekend. I want to say great job to the DCC Fire Science Club for a great job organizing, planning, and implementing the test burn. There was a lot of work that went into every aspect of getting the test done. Now to how the test went. The room was lit with a flare. About 8 minutes later the window on the D side was broken. Shortly after the room flashed the thermal pane double door on the A side broke. The FIT 5 was then thrown in and it activated. While the FIT was deploying its fire suppressant, the fire was knocked down, however as soon as the suppressant ran out the fire grew back to its original intensity. In this test, it was not a real success. I would have to say if it was used in an unventilated room, like its is advertised to be used on, it probably would have worked very well. Hopefully some more tests will be done on this device and similar devices so the fire service will be able to use this new, and other similar, technology to its best capabilities.
