  2. On July 14, 2012 Orange County held a Full-Scale Exercise to test their Hazard Specific Annex (2011 ed) for Transportation Accidents (Hudson River) contained in their CEMP.  This Full-Scale Exercise was based upon a very challenging boating accident on the Hudson River involving multiple patients requiring search, extrication, and land-based rescue. (SEE LINK) Based upon lessons learned from that exercise and several significant incidents involving multiple jurisdictions on the Hudson River, Orange County improved their Hazard Specific Annex in their CEMP to provide responders with guidance for Transportation Accidents on the Hudson River.  Agencies from Albany to Westchester with  jurisdiction on the Hudson River were invited to observe the exercise and subsequently the final copy of the plan was distributed to hopefully help stimulate improvement of emergency response on the Hudson River.

This comprehensive plan addresses many issues and operational challenges that frequently present with incidents on the Hudson River.  Orange County has designated (with USCG Approval) Marine Channel 81A for interoperability with all units operating on the Hudson River.  Motorola APX Dual Band VHF/UHF radios were purchased and issued to every agency with jurisdiction on the Hudson River and programmed with Marine Channels for Interoperability.

It would be beneficial if there was a Hudson River Emergency Response Consortium spearheaded by NY DHSES and the USCG...

  4. Wow....if a remount is that expensive now, I wonder what the price point is nowadays for a brand new 'Scope built from scratch. I know many of the departments that went that route did so to save a ton of money and in many cases, that was approx. the cost they were trying to avoid to begin with. In any event, I am glad to hear the Mack will apparently remain intact. Hope it goes to a collector who will continue to preserve it for many years to come.

We traded in the scope unfortunately and it is already sold to another department who wants to remount it. We purchased it in 1995 for $60K from Cocoa Beach Florida FD. Seagrave offered us a new 75' scope for $1.3, FDNY Spec. Our operating budget is about $80K and we are a Village so our funds are very tight compared to all the Fire Districts who are flush with cash.Cornwall will take delivery of their 100ft rearmount Pierce Quint this fall...our 1973 Aerialscope worked 28hours straight at the Mill Fire last year, a true workhorse! Here are photos of the new ride http://commandfireapparatus.com/used-fire-trucks-for-sale/?2000-ALF-LTI-75-Midmount-Aerial-Platform-288 Former Deer Park, Long Island.

  5. if you are on facebook, like Forensic Weather Consultants (Meteorologist Howard Altschule)...he was spot on with Irene and the Halloween storm of last year...he certainly has my attention on this one!

Quoted from Forensic Weather Consultants Facebook page 10/23/12

"The overnight computer models should be quite interesting. My gut feeling is that more model ensembles and solutions will trend closer to the Northeast Coastline. Why? The ECMWF and many of the GEFS ensembles are suggesting a massive storm affecting the Northeast (direct impacts in NJ, NYC, LI and CT). The Operational GFS model seems out to lunch still...but even it has trended a little further west. So, I'll have an update tomorrow morning, but I would not be surprised if more computer models indicate a major storm landfalling in the Northeast next week as a Super-Storm."

"UPDATE: While there is still some chance that this super-storm could go oout to sea, the specialists at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) agree that the Euro is the most reliable and beliveable scenario with this storm. It should most likely be a monstrous Post-Tropical system but with the equivalent strength of a powerful hurricane (just minus the warm core). I suspect that boats and ships will have to completely shut down any traffic from the Carolinas to the Northeast from Sunday through Wednesday as the thought of potential 25-40 Foot Waves is nauseating enough. In addition and highly troubling, is the fact that astronomical high tide and a full moon will occur Sunday Night. This will likely add a couple of feet to the ocean heights along the coast, thus creating a significant and potentially damaging storm surge and erosion in Long Island, CT and MA. Stay tuned."

  9. Apparatus of Westchester County Department of Emergency Services

Engine 7, Ladder 7 and Utility 3 are part of the Fire Brigade that responds

to alarms at Westchester Medical Center and a few surrounding facilities.

Engine 8 is a backup to Engine 7 in the event that this is Out of Service.

Otherwise Engine 8 is used for training.

Can anyone tell me what the purpose the Special Operations Scene Support Unit is? It is HUGE!

  10. It is very scary how easy it is for people to purchase used fire apparatus and emergency vehicles. I notice that many out of service equipment in ny have no plates. This past Saturday I was admiring two used aerials at a 9/11 car show and I asked the private owners if they had plates...of course not! The police just wave when we pass by.

Imagine what could happen if a terrorist got the same treatment from police. Not good!

Well worth it to refurb and keep a Single Axle!...you can't kill one!

  16. Many try to copy but none match up to the quality and performance of an Aerialscope. Don't forget that a true Truck doesn't have a pump on it. Our 1973 75' Aerialscope is a true workhorse and once you have used one, you'll never consider any other manufacturer. Save your money and buy a Scope! We hope to remount ours on a new Pierce cab and chassis for about $575K.

You can find a used one in the 1973+ range for about $18K. Check out www.advantageapparatus.com for cost effective remount option or www.birdsborofd.org for one completed through the Pierce Aerialscope remount program. Many departments that own Aerialscopes will never get rid of them. The Aerialscope is the only Truck that you can truly rely on for unmatched performance and durability.

Who truly needs a 95'+ Truck anyway. The Truck always belongs in front of the fire building. Most of these GINORMOUS trucks that departments are buying fall short of practicality...seems like many are simply bought for "the extra inch syndrome" rather than true need. Check out Mechanicstown's KME Tower at www.mechanicstownfd.com - at just under 1.5 million - whats the point? more isn't always better - how many streets in your district will actually support the weight of rigs like this?

It helps to contract with an apparatus architect when you are going to make an investment in any new rig. I recommend that you consult with Mike Wilbur and Tom Shand of Emergency Vehicle Response (www.emergencyvehicleresponse.com) before you make any purchase. It is time that districts incorporate Architects into apparatus purchase just like we do with a typical construction project. There are too many peoples lives riding on our decisions not to do our homework.

  17. Our 75' Aerialscope has been out of service at Seagrave in East Brunswick for a month now.  This news doesn't look promising for our situation either.  They have been stroking us "waiting for a part" but they say it will be ready next week...oh but they said that last week too.  We only have 1 Aerialscope compared to FDNY...makes me wonder now where we are on their priority list.  There is NO TRUCK LIKE AN AERIALSCOPE!!!

      ;)

After only 8-Weeks, our Aerialscope is finally fixed! We are picking it up on Monday Oct 17. After some phone tag with top administrators at Seagrave, they have admitted some difficulties at their E.Brunswick shop and they are making good on it with us.

I have heard rumors that Pierce may be acquiring Seagrave for the Aerialscope division...time will tell.
