It is with regret to announce the passing of Josephine Harris. Josephine was confined to a wheel chair trapped on the upper floors of one of the Towers on 9/11. The FDNY Members of Ladder 6 were coming down the many flights of stairs when they came upon Josephine who was unable to go down those stairs. As the members of Ladder 6 approached her, she said for them to leave her, and just save themselves. Of course the members of Ladder 6 did NOT do that. Instead they all took turns carrying her down the many flights of stairs. Then with only a few more flights to go, the entire 110 Story Tower came down on them. Trapping Josephine and those Ladder 6 Members. Later they were all rescued and of course Josephine was very Thankful to those FDNY Members.
The History Channel did a story on those FDNY Members and Josephine, along with a few others that survived that day. That story is called "Countdown to Ground Zero". It is now on DVD featuring Josephines story. She was certainly a hero that day and offered herself to stay back for the safety of others.
May you Rest in Peace Josephine Harris. You were a Hero as far as I am concerned, along with those Firefighters from Ladder 6 who carried you down those many flights of stairs to safety.

  3. eric12401 liked a post in a topic by cman473 in Specing out New Turnout Gear
The best advice I can give you is build your gear to YOUR needs. Don't let some pushy sales person come in and tell you that you "Need" PBI because its the best outer shell material. Yes, the test show that the PBI's are among the best for heat loss and heat protection...but remember it is ONLY an outer shell. PBI that Morning Pride uses is the SAME PBI that Cairns, Globe, Sperian ETC Uses. Just Because something has a PBI Outer shell does not mean it is going to be ergonomically correct for your body movements or shape. You want to find the best "fitting" gear prior to deciding on where you want your name or what padded knees you think you want.
Do not purchase gear because your neighbors use it. They may a certain brand for some irrelevant reasons to the actual performance of the the gear therefore not having a fair review of view on particular turn out gear. They may have purchased the gear for such reasons as they are close to a particular sales person or my favorite line, "What they got for free" In my opinion if your choice came down because of what you were "given", then you do not deserve to be in the position on making the decision on peoples safety equipment only because the free pair of gloves of received does not make that the best gear for you. At that point you might as well been put in a burlap sack and some salad bowls. If a vendor chooses to give you something free after you have done your research and you placed an order then fine.
Call Volume is very important, types of calls are just as important though. You could do 1000 calls a year, most of them being EMS and MVA's and very few fires, then PBI is not for you. Stick to the Nomex/Kevlar blends such as Advance, Advance Ultra or Crusaders out shells. Be sure to research your thermal liners and moisture barriers as well and make them part of the comfort process.
I have worn Globe GX7, Xtreme, Cairns Agis and Sperian Ultramotion and Sperian Vectra through out the years. I have found that believe it or not the Sperian has been the best fitting gear I have worn and I am not saying this because I sell the line but because I wore it BEFORE I sold the line.
Remember to keep your safety in mind, your current gear issues in mind and what you would like to see in the future of your choices. Just because some thing "Looks" Cool does not mean it is or in fact that it will even work for you. Add your personal touch and TELL your sales person what YOU want and not what he would like to see.
I hope this helps. Be safe and Good Luck!

Congratulations on a well run, very informative web site. At times it can be frustrating to listen to some of the rants on here-- some even by me . But a whole lot of very important information to the fire service has passed through here. The wealth of firefighting knowledge that some of you have is absoultly amazing... and some need to have a thicker skin.
Every firefighter should make EMTBravo part of their daily firefighter reading, if they do they will become better firefighters for their community and the people that they have sworn to protect.

We received a post- arrest the other night in the local ER. She (a dialysis pt who missed her rx due to the winter storm) called 911 saying she couldn't breathe and "was probably having a heart attack." 2 minutes later PD broke down her door and found her asystolic-- started CPR. 2 more minutes later ALS arrived and loaded a few rounds of Epi and Atropine into her. Got a pulse. Gave 1 more of Epi and 1 more of Atropine. Scrambled her to me in the local ER with a pulse of 40 (mostly ectopic, med-based beats). We immediatley began the hypothermia protocol (AKA Code Cool).
    Fast forward: 2 days.
She was warmed back up in our ICU from 93 degrees to 98 degrees and was extubated the day after. 2 days later she was extubated and asked ME, the one who received her and wrote her off as non-viable, ""What the Hell was I thinking bothering you people with my medical problems??? I'm so sorry I bothered you all!"
WE broke her ribs, tore her lip tubing her, and jammed lines and tubes all over the place in her tiny body, and she's apologizing to ME. This is why I do this. Beyond words. Seriously. There's so rarely a save post-arrest, and if the person survives, he/she rarely comes out of it as much more than a plant on a window sill. And she thanked ME.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, all. NEVER forget why you do what you do and NEVER assume your efforts are fruitless. This woman was proof to me to always the assume the outcome is going to be a GOOD ONE.

Isn't it amazing how when it comes to firefighting everyone is a friggin' expert! "You're not supposed to put water on that..." What then should they use Mr. 9 - 5 desk jockey, orange juice, milk, urine ??? God bless the Brothers, I'm glad they weren't injured. They really had their hands full with the storm and the lack of resources thanks to Mayor Bloomberg and his immediate staff of CEO losers...

These are photos of Rombout Fire Departments structure fire that occurred at 226 Windsor Rd just before midnight on Sunday. Firefighters arrived to find fire through the roof of a ~ 4500 sq ft residence with high winds, heavy snow, white-out conditions, and near zero wind chill ...... Perfect weather for firefighting....... Firefighters apparently attempted an interior attack but were forced to retreat due to insufficent water and rapid fire spread due to the high winds...... I arrived as Command advised that they were going defensive....... I had a tough time keeping my lens free of snow and debris due to the high winds and only shot with one of two cameras I normally shoot with as a result...... This was clearly a frustrating fire for all who were there.....

A shot from the front...... Hughsonvilles FAST Team and Village of Fishkill......

It was snowing heavily and very windy.......

Hey, I found a hot spot........

A shot from the rear..... These guys were inside under the fire but had to pull out due to rapidly deteriorating conditions......

    Insurmountable odds.....

With the wind fanning the fire and water issues.... Crews were ordered to pull back their lines and were clearly frustrated that they were defeated .....

This is shot of the Central Hudson gas man..... He had just retrieved the power meter but said "I killed the power but It's up to guys to turn off the gas.... It's too damn hot!"

While a tanker shuttle was being initiated, Rombout's Tower gets set up......

Village of Fishkill firefighters watch as 62-45 hits the fire......

    The end.....

The law also states the driver of any emergency vehicle will drive "WITH DUE REGARD". Any lawyer will argue that an emergency vehicle going past a red light or other negative traffic control device and involved in an accident even if not the operators fault was not operated with due regard since we should all expect the other drivers to be idiots and not paying any attention.
All that really matters in this accident is that every one walked away.

Here are a couple of instructor quotes from actual pump operator courses. One is the New York version, the other is the Virginia Beach version. They are quite similar. I would like to hear the Califoirnia version.
    FROM THE SOUTH:
What should you flow that nozzle at? 40psi, right? Sure you could flow it at 50 or 80. Can you hold on to it? I don't know. What's the worst that could happen? Slide around on your back on the floor for a bit 'til you hit a wall and that's where you fight fire from...it's just that simple yall
    FROM THE NORTH"
To determine correct Pump Pressure, simply throttle up slowly until the nozzleman just leaves the ground. Then throttle back 1/2 turn (on digitals, quickly tap the "Decrease" button twice).
If the nozzleman is in the building or otherwise out of sight, this can also be done audibly.

Many many FD's in Westchester have very little regard for OSHA regulations. This year I can think of over 35 violations issued in Westchester (and thats just 3 depts). How many depts. respond to "fire calls" with fewer than 6 firefighters (at least 4 being interior)? I can think of about 20% of Westchester FD's (I know there are many more from reading the IA's) that violate the respiratory protection program by lack of manpower on at least a portion of there calls.
And the wrath from PESH is not strong enough to convince depts to change thier ways. I hope that the litigation that is coming will hurt enough to convince many depts that they need to follow the rules. Its sad to think that firefighters and officers don't fight for this because its the right thing to do and it will protect us.
Deputy Chief Billy Goldfeder has a great line, he asks: "WHO IS IN YOUR WALLET"? If you do not care for the people whos photos you carry in your wallet then dont follow the rules, they are there so that at the end of the day you go home to them.

Where I live, which is pretty far away from everyone else on this forum, County 911 always tones out FD for all MVA's, whether its a Code 2 (MVA w/o injuries) or Code 4 (MVA w/ injuries). On Code 2's FD responds for traffic control without lights or sirens. On Code 4's EMS and FD respond. At my FD when we get paged out for a Code 2 we send our utility truck for TC and for a Code 4 we send a rescue (1st) and usually engine depending on how many people show up. Just a little info on how things go down here.

If we are dispatched, we will come. If the PD gets there first and it's minor and dispatch tells us so, we would slow down our response. We wont return to quarters unless told by the FD IC on scene, or we get there and evaluate. We trust our PD agencies, but belive in the "trust, but verify" motto.

Figured I'd get this thing going again since I haven't introduced myself.
Most of you have seen my IA's for Ulster County, which is where I reside. I'm a member of the Lomontville Fire Department, which is pretty much in between Hurley and Stone Ridge. We are a rural fire department, 15 square miles or so (I think 10 of those alone are cornfields ), and we get less than 150 calls a year. I'm hoping one day to get into dispatching, as I love knowing what's going on at all times. I've taken a couple tours at the Ulster County Communications Center in Kingston, and absolutely loved it.
