  1. There were two incidents that have stuck in my mind. First was Christmas Eve of 2005 at my residence. I heard yelling from downstairs so I ran down my stairs to find that my father had partially amputated his five fingers on his left hand by the table saw. FD and EMS was called while I bandaged the hand. Asst. Chief came on scene requested medevac. 1 hour and 15mins later he was in surgery at Westchester Medical Center. 6 hours of surgery later his fingers were reattached. It was a bit of a Christmas miracle because the hand specialist was supposed to go on vacation the day prior but a similar injury came in the day before. The second incident was when I was on vacation in North Carolina. My family and I were driving down the highway when we came up on a 5 vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer and a car on fire. It was on the opposite side of a 6 lane highway. No emergency services were on the scene yet. We stopped and I ran across the highway where someone directed me to a car where a women was trapped in the car in cardiac arrest. I broke the window and climbed in and began CPR the best I could to then have the paramedics come and tell me to stop because they don't do traumatic arrests. It was later determined that two people were killed (the one in the car I worked on and one in the car that burned) and the cause of the accident was the tractor trailer driver who was drunk.
  2. On Thursday July 11, Paramedic Bill Spadafora came home. Bill was critically injured in an ambulance accident on May 28th. After almost two months at Albany Medical Center, Bill not only came home but he came home in style. Many EMS, Fire, and Police agencies came together to participate in his homecoming. The following is a video of his homecoming. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=_L74QsLeO4g Welcome Home Bill!!
  3. Here's a video I found of a rescue being made at a single story residence. Unknown of where this was. http://www.godvine.c...-Ever-1378.html
  4. Rhinebeck High School has AEDs in the building. They had one there and put more in after the one was put to use when one of my classmates, a triple varsity athlete, was playing gym softball and went into sudden cardiac arrest. She was revived by the gym teacher and the school nurse. The AED was used and good thing they had one in the building. Soon after they were installed throughout the building.
  5. Thank you for all the replies. I am not interested in nor do i have the money for a leather so my decision is between the 1010 and the 1044.
  6. I am looking to buy a new helmet. I currently have a department issued Ben 2. I am looking for a lightweight helmet. I narrowed my search down to the Cairns 1010, Cairns 1044, and Bullard USTM6. After to talking to others they suggested the 1010 or 1044. I am now looking to decide which one is better (comfort, durability, etc.). Also, what is the difference between the two? What helmet would you recomend and why? Also,do you know any information on both? Thank you in advance Brendan
  7. Here is a video i put together of pictures from the Hurley Fire Department
  8. Well i think its time to introduce myself. My name is Brendan Nugent. I am a firefighter and EMT-B with the Hurley Fire Department in Ulster County. i have been in the department for 6 years including three years as a cadet.. I Graduated from Dutchess Community College from the Fire Science program with an Associated in Fire and Occupational Safety and currently am in my senior year at the University of New Haven studying Fire/Arson investigation. I find this website to be very informational. I like seeing whats going on in the area and the amazing photos that are taken
  9. For my department, it is procedure to atleast diconnect the battery, if not cut it. If there is significant damage, especially to the front of the car, we will cut the cables using the method mentioned above by cutting a section out of the cable to prevent them from touching again. If there is only minor damage and we have the time and manpower, we will take the time to disconnect the cables using sockets. Another thing to remember is not to become satisfied when you have only disabled one battery, there are some vehicles out there that have more than one battery and not always in the same place. So there always has to be a thought that there may be a 2nd battery.
  10. Here are some photos from the St. Peters School Fire in Kingston that occured on 12/21/10 around 9:00pm. 11. ]My department has dealt with this many times. For pump-outs we have a truck equipped with and assortment of pumps including two trash pumps. If there are multiple pump-outs we set up a command center in our firehouse and have crews at the firehouse equip multiple trucks as needed and dispatch the trucks from the firehouse by radio. We then prioritize which house is pumped out first. It depends on water height and if it endangers any utilites or furnace. We also have the issue of having a creek run through the middle of our town. As in 2005 and 2007 it sometimes floods and evacuations and road closures need to be done. We go door to door and advise the residents the necessity to evacuate and once they leave we mark the houses and have the utility company cut power to the street. We have apparatus on either side of the creek and set up East and West command and have a central command at our firehouse. Unfortuately we have gotten alot of practice at this and keep updated with weather and water levels throughout. This was the command board at our 2007 flood. It has who was on each apparatus and where they were and water levels at certain times on the left
