  1. The UFA and FASNY both have plates but they are found under the organizations list on the DMV site.
  2. "NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1219. Putting glass or other injurious substances on highway prohibited. A.) C.) Any person removing a wrecked or damaged vehicle from a highway shall remove any glass or other injurious substance dropped upon the highway from such vehicle." It is not always the responsiblity of the tow truck operator. If you drive your car away it is your responsibility to clean up after your accident.

  7. As you can see from the attached quotes taken today from OSHA's website the numbers you hear thrown around come from their requirements for intial training. The awareness level does not state any hours but as the last poster put up, FF's can not be trained to awareness. The big thing most people do not realize is that you do not have to take a refresher course. OSHA allows you to demonstrate your competency BUT, you better be ready to DOCUMENT!, DOCUMENT!!, DOCUMENT!!! It can not just be a simple sheet the the dept. training officer/chief signs and says you did it. So the easiest thing to do is take the classes. The other issue with haz mat training is alot of individuals who ride the front right seat do not have enough initial haz mat training to meet the requirements to be a incident commander at a haz mat incident.
  8. Remember 585, Are you saying to allow the meter to clear before turning off or actually zeroing the meter by fresh calibration?
  9. My experience with text messaging for calls has not been the greatest. I have had experiences where my VHF low-band pager has gone off twenty minutes prior to my cell phone receiving the text message. Now with that said, most cases I receive the text message one to two minutes after the page and in one or two cases prior to receiving the tone on the VHF pager. There have been more than enough calls though where I have not gotten immediate notification that I do NOT rely on my text messages.

  12. Correct, it doesn't cite the Law as to the PO having jurisdiction to turn the FD around. I believe though that this is the law that NWFDmedic was referring to in post #20

  14. Hey, Does any one know who transmits on 453.000?? Some one is broadcasting on this frequency like as if they are a NYC Citywide channel. The only thing is they cover both FD and PD major incidents in the tri-state area. I heard them covering the 5 alarm fire tonight in union city and the white plains fire last night. most times it sounds like they are listening to scanners and other times they have guys on scene giving updates. Some other incidents have included shootings, stabbings, and Pin jobs. Just curious. Thanks in advance.

  16. Firebuff31, IYO rockland has better fire facilities than westchesters and that may be the case when it comes to certain props. There is always room for getting better. The thing is here in westchester we are very lucky to have the facilities that we have. I do alot of teaching around the state and get to see alot of facilities. Westchester's has one of the best facilites around the state. A lot of counties have no facilities at all. A lot of the times I am teaching in firehouses on the apparatus floor b/c that is all they have. I am not trying to put you down but you need to realize how good we really have it.
  17. IMO - It is always better to talk about things than to bottle them up. Talking to fellow first responders who understand where it is that you are coming from and also seeing other responders talking about the issues that they feel helps. My only concern would be that whoever ends up moderating the forum really needs to have training in Critical Incident Stress Management. The problem comes in that people mean well but sometimes more damage can occur than help if someone is not properly trained in helping these people.
  18. If you are interested the test to work for OFPC opened today.
  19. Mamaroneck village - 5 engines(1 spare), 2 ladders, 1 utility staffing is all volunteer and is dependant on who is in town. manpower will try to get to the houses but if rigs are out they respond to the scene. average response is approx 10-15 personnel.
  20. Students who are taking their first class will use their SS# to complete the card. They must also completely fill out the card as to the information on the back so that they have an address to mail the new number to. Once you have been issued the new number you are supposed to use the number instead of your SS#. If for some reason you have lost your card you may still use your SS#. On top of this you will start to see new Green cards instead of the old orange cards. The new cards collect more information than the old. Example those of you who belong to two different fire organizations will be able to put both departments on the card. Second the new number eventlually allow you to access over the web your personal training record on file at OFPC.
  21. On Wednesday Gov. Spitzer signed into law a new section of Executive Law. Section 156-g Formally creates NY-TF2 in statute and gives power to OFPC to coordinate it's activities. This new section also allows OFPC to create additional task force teams across the state along with technical support teams. It also gives power to OFPC to provide an accreditation system to evaluate exisiting and future capabilities in regions and localities. OFPC will be creating rules and regulation over the next few months. The new law took effect immediately. Executive_Law_156g.pdf
  22. One thing to keep in mind about these teams compared to NY-TF1 is that they are IN-STATE teams. They will follow the FEMA Styling but are for in state incidents. They are not meant to go out of state like TF1.

  25. Here in mamaroneck we were using multiple boats to rescue trapped people for awhile but we switched to the nat. guard units. This was done for a couple of reasons. One small boats only hold a couple of victims at a time and sometimes the rescuers were having to walk along side the boat. second for those boats with outdrives, obstacles such as guardrails and changes in elevations such as curbs caused navigation issues. We had two boats who lost lower units in their outboards due to this. third it is one thing to lose your outboard in calm water but there were large portions of town that had swift water. It was much safer to use the trucks and front loaders to transport people. We could also transport larger numbers in each trip.
