Some departments, particularly rural areas, don't have the luxury of waiting until their members reach 21 or 25 or whatever. We all know 18 year olds with more maturity than some 40 year olds. I think you have to deal with it
on a department by department, individual by individual basis depending on its specific needs.
Regardless of the age, training is crucial, especially with tankers as they offer their own particular operating difficulties.
One of our local departments rolled their tanker a few years back and it was being driven by one of their most mature and experienced members. It happens.

I have to respectfully disagree. I drive an ambulance 4 days a week 10 hours a day at my job in New York City and am 19. Prior to driving ambulances I drove pick up trucks/dump trucks with landscaping trailers attatched.I've been driving since I was 16 when I got my permit. I feel that if you can handle the vehicle properly and respect what you're driving than you'll be fine. You have to exercise care when operating bigger vehicles.

At 0746 hours this morning I was signing out at work after working a midnight, when we heard a loud crash, and found this green SUV on top of our LT's personal truck in a cloud of smoke.

The SUV had been traveling northbound on the Bronx River Parkway when the driver lost control and went off the side of the elevated roadway falling approximately 40 feet striking fence, the side of the red pickup, and finally coming to a rest on the hood as seen. Our first fear was that our LT who had just signed out was in his truck. Luckily he was still in the station house. The driver of the SUV was just getting out of the car. A passenger was still in the front seat of vehicle and she was removed due to gas leaking from several punctures in the gas tank. I think our sergeant requested everything as the 49 Pct, ESU and numerous FDNY units quickly arrived on scene. First on scene was Engine 45, who quickly stretched a line. On the top rear of the photo, where the chain link fence is bent is where the SUV left the roadway.

Beginning to stabilize the vehicle to deal with the fuel leak and prepare to move the SUV, since the patients were being treated by FDNY EMS and units from St Barnabus Hospital.

A general overview of the scene after the SUV was placed on the ground. This also gives a rough idea of the height involved

    Rescue 3

Members of R3 and the squads used a grip hoist to remove the SUV from the hood of the pick up. Engine 45's front bumper and a steel post near the building were used as anchors

The 5th man on the back step of Engine 45. A silent protest, or a sense of humor?

Great story nice job on the passersby's part. A year or so back a Mass Trooper got into a scuffle in the middle and right lanes of rte. 84 just into Sturbridge, only a couple miles from my house, 2 off duty S. Carolina troopers stopped to assit the trooper, the suspect was a a very large man from what i can remeber, good thing the passerbys in each story stopped and lended a hand unlike the other people who kept going.

Cool shots, do you have pics of all of Harrison's rigs? And what is the new york state certerfied symbol on? Is it an ambulance?

There is a lot of knowledge here but we need to know more to help. At first Gowens Knight seemed like the logical choice but since then you've supplied some info that leads me to believe that you are looking for more of a second due engine, TL supply rig, and maybe a hose wagon.
    Where are you?
How much of your first due contains hydrants?
How often as you called to establish non hydrant water supply for mutual aid?
What is your environment like... Urban, suburb, rural, BFE?
When your primary attack apparatus is OOS how does this rigs responsibilities change
Will this rig perform any additional services ( brush, extrication, etc)
    What's the budget

    1. You incorrectly asked about a supply engine when you were really asking about a 2nd due.
    2. I don't think anyone but a dealer would be willing to recommend anything to you without knowing more about your district.
    3. You were very vague and unspecific about what you wanted from the truck. If you can fit the requirements of an engine into less than 10 lines of text you should be working for a design firm or something.
    4. If you want opinions on manufactures look in the dozens of past threads on here in the past years, literally all of your answers have been answered there several times.
    5. You asked for this help and assistance was forthcoming, I do not appreciate your tone and I am sure mfc does not either.

    Hey guy,
These firefighters did their best to try and help you out, but the confusion was created by you when you stated you were looking for something, yet upon further questioning, they pointed out to you you might actually be looking for something else (supply engine vs. more versatile pumper).
Don't come back with antagonistic comments and insult the members. A guy with a couple of dozen posts on this board has no right calling out more experienced members here as rookies, and green-horns, etc. If you don't like what they have to say, the best course of action is to ignore it, and move on. Okay?
I'd ask the other members to cease and desist with this guy; don't take the bait.
    Have a nice weekend everybody.

jc, the situation I was mentioning was simple. R-4 was assigned to this bus accident, and R-3 was requested as an additional Rescue company. They were released, and assigned to a 10-75 nearby. I am not sure of the specifics, but I wouldn't doubt it if they got in before, or with the second due companies. I understand your desire to have them up north where they may have to and will save your hide if you get in a jam, but believe it or not, R-4 and R-1 are the primary Rescue Companies to be covered in case it goes to poop out on the street.
Now, as far as your post is concerned about having Firefighters as dispatchers, here's where you and I will politely agree to disagree. You don't have to have crawled down a number of hallways to be good at what I do. Does it help to have a little bit of knowledge of firefighting and fire operations?? Absolutely. I've said this a number of times over the course of my career, you don't have to know anything about what you guys do out on the street to be good at what I do, but it sure does help. Ask some of your brethren in LA City how that's working out for them. I think many of them, and I would fathom a guess that you would much rather be crawling down that hallway than relocating 93 Engine to 37 Engine at 2 in the morning. I have some firefighting experience from my years in the Vols(as we call them at work), and the military. Luckily, most of the guys I work with do as well. I also have the knowledge of geography and firehouse locations that make me good at what I do.
Next time you see a car wreck on the highway in the city, don't call 911, call me. I'll get you what you need, and handle the knuckleheads on the 1st floor of 11MT. bc, I appreciate your candor. I am asking these questions because I think that those in charge have really lost sight of what's right. I try to follow the rulebook as best I can, but there are times when you can throw the book out the window and go seat of your pants.
