  1. 1. The Bee-Line bus shown parked within the fire lines. Was that there to give firefighters a warm dry place to take a breather?

From my understanding, the bus was requested in order to provide temporary shelter for the evacuated (later displaced) residents of 371 South Broadway (the 4-story/48-unit apartment building next to the fire building). I don't know whether it was OEM, FD, or PD who made the request. Once the Red Cross with OEM set up a Reception Center at a nearby church, the Bee-Line bus was released after a few hours of service and cleared the scene. I'm sure the bus could also have been used for firefighters, but I only saw it being utilized by a dozen or so civilians.

I could be mistaken, so feel free to correct me if that's the case.

  2. To go even deeper, to require it in the 9th grade on?

Also, are all teachers and all school personnel in NYS required to have CPR/First Aid?

No, and no. Although, it's not uncommon for school to have CPR training offered one day a year for their staff. I know the American Red Cross has recently come out with a fantastic program for faculty as well as students with the cost in mind.

  6. If you are looking to make an impact on your local and greater community through volunteer emergency/disaster programs, you may be disappointed by the MRC. They are rarely, if ever, activated, and are not that generally active. But, it doesn't hurt to join them anyway. That also goes for WEVR as well. I'm not (yet) a MRC member, but I know people who are in it.

If you still live in Mount Vernon, you may be interested in their Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) or Auxiliary Police program.

Feel free to contact me privately if you have any questions.

  9. For those of you familiar with EmergencyEmail.org (especially great for local NWS hazardous weather alerts and daily weather report links), today they released their 2013 National Flu Situation Page, which is a neat resource. http://www.emergencyemail.org/flu

"your automatically updating information source for flu information from public and private sources to include:

    - Updating CDC Flu Map

    - FLU shot locater

    - Live updating news feeds from CDC

  10. Police costs are in the spotlight more than ever as the nation wrestles with the brutal economy and communities, including those in the Lower Hudson Valley, search for ways to cut spending.

Police services come with a high price tag for specialized staff and include rising costs for health care, retirement benefits and vehicles.
