It's a damn shame this thread is getting so little attention.  This should be a big wake-up call for every department to take a few minutes and do an honest, objective self-assessment to answer "can this happen to us?"

For younger FF coming up, this should be a heads-up that if someone is telling you to do something that doesn't seem right you should confirm it.  And if you don't have the training, don't do it!

The old attitude "new guys / young ones need to keep the eyes open and mouths shut" has no business in today's fire service.  Have a questioning attitude.  Not to be obnoxious but to learn and make sure you're doing it right.

Sadly we can't assume that the senior guys - or even all the officers - are leading by example.

Before everyone jumps on me, I'm not saying that we all do it wrong, I'm saying we can always do it better!  Be smart, be safe, and live to fight another day!

This has nothing to do with volunteer vs. career or anything other than someone being an ASS!!!

Bad analogy.  The best analogy would be the volunteer EMT compared to the "career" "paid" EMT.  Both receive the same training and hold the same certification.  All security guards in NYS receive the same training and certification from NYS as do police officers but they are not the same.  That's unfortunately not the case with firefighter training in NYS!

So the county has 58 departments.  We can debate the logic and necessity of that for days without ever resolving it.  Does it need 58?  Does the number of departments have some significance to fire growth?  I think not.

Population drives demand so dismissing population considerations is flawed reasoning.

Yes the majority of departments are volunteer.

5 are career or if they have volunteers, they no longer respond to calls.
9 are combination with the majority of responders being career ( in some cases the volunteers are exterior only and only have a handful left)
4 are combination with the majority of responders being volunteer.
    and Port Chester.

So their are more volunteer departments. But what do they protect?

the population of Westchester County is 972,634

434,622 people live in communities with the 5 career depts. (approximately 45%).

177,397 people live in communities with the combination depts. with mostly career response (approximately 18%).

    Thats 612,019 people (63%)

The communities with the majority being volunteer are hard to calculate as they include fire districts that do not have census data, but it is totaled at no more than 360,615. (37%).

Responsible crime scene units typically do not respond with lights and sirens. Buffy crime scene units, well that's another story. Much risk, little benefit.

Locally we've lost a few.  Brewster (though it's been reincarnated), Putnam Valley, Cortlandt, Town of Ossining, Village of Haverstraw, to name a few.

NJ has been under the gun a lot recently and have done away with some big jobs like Camden.

No public service agencies are safe.  Everyone is a potential political target.

None of the airport is in the Village of Port Chester.  Part of it may be in Rye Brook but the majority is in Harrison and North Castle.

Not a policy.  Civil service law covers this.  Don't know the particulars anymore though.

If you're in emergency services and you're complaining about actually helping someone who needs help - you might need to rethink what you're doing with your life.  If you don't like waking up and going to a call that isn't "juicy" or "salty" enough for you, cry me a river. It's what you signed up for.

Problem is they're saying that the eight victims of this "supplemented" the volunteer force.  So they're claiming that there's no substantial change in coverage by eliminating the eight career guys.

It is amazing how we criticize everyone about calls at assisted living facilities while we don't cover all our own calls and have our own system problems.

    Glass houses!
If it is a tax-paying facility in your community, you have to go there when they call. Even when it is often and for what you consider minor or unwarranted calls.

Can anyone provide information (facts) as to why  the board made this decision, and what, if any, plan they have for fire coverage moving forward.
