  4. Fire lieutenant files for retirement after probePosted: Jan 31, 2014 11:53 AM ESTUpdated: Jan 31, 2014 6:02 PM EST

WASHINGTON (AP) - A District of Columbia fire lieutenant who commanded a station where a man collapsed across the street and didn't receive care has submitted her retirement papers.

A spokesman for the city's deputy mayor for public safety said Friday that Lt. Kellene Davis has filed for retirement.

Davis and another firefighter had been placed on administrative leave as city officials investigate the station's response to the death of Medric Mills. Relatives say Mills went into cardiac arrest on Saturday afternoon in a shopping center parking lot and later died. They say several people went across the street to the station, but no firefighters or emergency medical workers walked over to help.

Mayor Vincent Gray has called the incident "an outrage." He said those involved failed to show "common decency."

Some from the article - please read for full description...

Now FOX 5 has learned the lieutenant in charge of that firehouse appears to be throwing one of her own under the bus.

The lieutenant’s name is Kellene Davis. She has been removed from command.

She wrote a letter (letter within article) to Fire Chief Kenneth Ellerbe. In it, she is blaming the whole thing on a firefighter who she says disobeyed her command. (which has come into question)

(CNN) - Marie Mills held her 77-year-old father, who had collapsed outside in a Washington street. She screamed for help.

A passerby rushed across the street to bang on the door of a fire station, knowing that firefighters are trained to provide emergency medical help.

But they wouldn't leave the station.

The same thing happened when two more people tried to summon the firefighters for assistance, Mills says.

"We looked across the street at the fire station. There was a firefighter that was actually standing against the fire apparatus," she told CNN affiliate WJLA. "Everybody started trying to wave him over." But the firefighter said he had to be dispatched first.

"I even ran to the curb and said, 'Are you going to help me or let my dad die?'" said Mills.......

  8. Are you kidding?

If its someone not from the dispatch to this incident, it does not matter who it is, they are not in charge.

If their role is NTSB, than that's their role. NTSB is not in charge of an incident, they are in charge of the investigation.

  9. 1) then their is no issue with the federal law

    2) Then he should not be chief, new or otherwise. The biggest requirement is that ALL firefighters must have the training BEFORE they respond to any call, even as a probie.

what if the 1st person on the scene is a Past Volly Chief and taxpayer in the neighboring town, village etc.. and works for NTSB By day THEN WHAT????:D

  10. Multiple people injured in Minneapolis building fire

    Posted: Jan 01, 2014 9:58 AM ESTUpdated: Jan 01, 2014 12:06 PM EST

  11. the Most recent MTA posting was for a chief level, in the most recent case and a "inspector/Fire Marshall" @ Grand central a few months Ago as I recall.. My specific terminology might not be spot on .. sorry... I would suggest you google MTA/LIRR....jobs and watch the site like a hawk

  12. I know a few guys who've done this gig. Overall they liked it as a one time experience. The biggest gripe is the pay is not so great for being isolated for months at a time. Some of the scientists also tend to have a rather dismissive attitude towards the "blue collars" at McMurdo, but that's to be expected. Not much in the way of work either, unless fire prevention/inspection is your thing. One of the key points to remember is that once winter sets in, that's it...your there for the duration in 24 hour night until spring rolls in, stuck inside with the same people hour after hour, day after day, week after week in very close quarters. One of my colleagues who's done it likens it to being on a submarine at sea. For all that though there are plus sides for those looking to do something different. Anyone interested PM me and I'll see if I can't get you in contact with someone at PAE directly.

    Stay safe and good luck

But on the positive side room and board for your period and transportation at "least" are not coming out of your pocket, and sure Isolation is tough but YOU should be able to save some pretty good money... as far as the scientists go, its not much differant then in Many walks of life... might be great life experiance for the right person who's Interested in such a quest, some might see it as a awesome item on one's resume. Maybe If I was 19 or 20 again ,.... oh right never mind we didnt have any nets Much less an Inter one...

  13. I just happened across this announcement, I realize this isnt for everyone, but

  14. Its a sad situation to be sure, That folks in Greenport can't see ANY potential...I wasn't aware that the Firefighter had been purchased in this manner, Knowing The Harvey has sailed into New London, Mystic and a few Suffolk ports itself obviously makes Keeping both of them, Harder since Both groups are required to raise funds JUST to Maintain rusting....It'd be awesome to Be able to Maintain BOTH of these historical Vessels

  15. NFPA might have a thing to suggest about using nonapproved devices....

    1) the "opening strainer" a) can't restrict water flow and B) needs to be kept clear of long term veggie growth..

    2) head pressure (not having a clue where this is to be located) may be a significant concern when closing non approved valves (such as PVC BALL VALVES) limiting ability to close the valve fully, and also draining/freeze prevention issues

typically PVC style "Dry Hydrants" are used for drafting so these issues are lessened, The idea of Placing a Ball valve in line, to close the gravity flow is possible of course, as would be setting up some Manner of "BLEEDER" Valve placed Close enough to help reduce Back pressure on the pump* as well as draining the Barrel and LIne so that it doesnt freeze.... keeping in mind that the general piping should be below the frost like... typically PVC valves ( 1/4 turn Ball valves) can be blocked with Ice as can a "gate" style valve....

    * a few years ago I had My career company out we were having a Pump Operator/engineer's test coming up so we were out drills doing some spotting and hooking up and flowing some water etc, the Boss was aware that we were involved possibly delayed.. with 3 trainees and mysel, the guy who was actually drivning hooked up front suction began the senerio ended up with a portable "stinger" and 2 1/2 and 1 3/4 ''s set up flowing when a 1st due box came in, Knowing that 2nd & 3rd due had been moved up making us 3rd, it gave me the ability to actually teach a very important lesson.... One of the fellas shut the plug down, but the valve didnt close fully because of water pressure.....I let everyone jerk around a minute and only when they all freaked out, I cracked a side cap on the plug and 2 1/2 discharge cap on the pump the valve on the plug closed and we were able to respond.... MY point is while the PIV might seem good It doesnt Have a drain, If the source creates a fair HEAD pressure and you get "STUCK" then what are you going to do? that being said Using some small "BLEEDER: pressure relief valve" may need an area of significant crushed stone to keep from "undermining" the area IF the valve breaks or freezes open or partly open....you might end up with a nice big HOLE.....

    ultimately? standard is easier
