  1. Horton, Osage, PL Custom, and AEV. The current Horton 2007ish) is one of the worst rigs I've ever ridden in, have had everything happen from having cabinets flying open and launching their contents across the patient compartment, cabinets that lock themselves, electrical system that completely shuts off in the middle of calls and requires a restart of the rig, we even had to send it back to Horton so they could take the box off and reweld the cracking frame. The Horton we are getting rid of though (2001) is perfectly fine, no issues. Can't really anything about the PL custom yet since it's not in service yet, but the demo rig PL brought down when the truck committee was looking at rigs rode beautifully.

  2. I had often wondered why they were there after hearing them go to 3rd and 4th dispatches for most of the calls that I heard. Did they ever look at seperating the fire district and ambulance? I know of a department upstate that did that to some success. That was mostly so they could bill for services though rather than a manpower issue.

Honestly, I don't know why this wasn't ever tried. It was the opinion of high ranking personnel from very well run neighboring agencies that Florida EMS should have tried to separate from fire, but the leadership of Florida EMS never went for it. Also, I think the senior members where afraid to loose their benefits through the FD, and the FD liked that they could tax for EMS and spend only a little on EMS and keep the rest for fire.

Let me ask a couple of questions to fill in the conversation:

First, does anyone here know if there is anything in NYS law that would prevent a fire department from creating a separate class of membership that would not be required to take FF1 and, of course, not required to respond to fire calls? It would be valuable to know if this is strictly an in-house rule, or there is some legal requirement.

And, to take 50-65's question one step further, if they did not try to work around their rule, why not? If this was just an in-house rule, the answer to this is very important.

The first FD I thought of that also does EMS is Somers, and based on the Somers' website you can be either fire or EMS if you choose, but not knowing anything Somers FD, i could be wrong.

I will preface this next statement by saying that i am not, and never have been, a member of Florida FD/EMS, and most of the information I have on the topic comes second hand, from very reliable sources, but I still could be getting it wrong. As I understand it, the Commissioners of Florida FD wanted to be a FD, no interest in EMS at all. So they were a FD first, and then if you wanted to do EMS, that was something you figured out how to do yourself after joining the FD, and the FD was gonna put the bare minimum into the ambulance just to prevent anyone from claiming negligence on their part. Why it took them so long to drop EMS, I don't know, I would have figured they would have done it as soon as these feeling arose. To put this in perspective, they went to the Towns of Warwick and Goshen, and said "we're done with EMS, now you figure it out". Then as one FFD EMS member put it, "they "fired" their employees, and then told them they needed to continue working for the next 6 months and do the job well". I don't know of any job where they fire you but keep you working for any further length of time.

  3. I passed a Chester Ambulance pick up last week in Newburgh, are they back "in business"?

As far as I know cvac owned only one out of three ambulances along with two first response vehicles...the other two larger ambulances were purchased by the town. If they aren't joy riding (which really wouldn't surprise me at all) they may have been doing a medical transport that they were hired to do. From what I heard CVAC (whatever or more specifically whomever is left) received permission from NYS to continue doing so.

He means the Chester VAC pick up truck. The guy driving the Chester VAC pick up truck is an Emstar medic, I'm not really sure what connection he has to Chester Vac. Chester Vac is techinically still around with a 7 digit number, mobile life is still doing the 911 jobs. As I understand it, Chester is doing just enough calls to keep their CON. However, the last real member they had, the Robert Boardman from the article, is now FDNY EMS, and isn't doing any volly work as far as I know, so I think they're kinda screwed.

  4. http://www.recordonline.com/article/20141003/NEWS/410040310/101008/NEWS

If I read the article correctly, it said that one of the problems getting members for the ambulance was that they had to first join the fire department and take fire classes. (presumably FF1?). If that is/was a known barrier, did they try to work around it?

I don't know that they had to go to ff1, but they did have to join the fire side of the department and go through whatever in house training, ffd had, and no, they never dropped that requirement. Another problem they had was that they had new EMTs and who had to be "cleared" to ride by themselves as an EMT, but the senior EMTs weren't showing up for calls, so the new EMTs weren't getting cleared. There were several times when they had a driver and a new EMT, but they'd turn over the call cause they didn't have a "cleard" EMT. Also, about four years ago they brought in Emstar as their BLS backup as well as ALS provider after the surrounding corps got tired of covering all of of florida's calls, so if there was a call they didn't want to go on, they just let the Emstar go and became over reliant on paid crews. It basically comes down to the commissioner's didn't really want anything to do EMS and and didn't work with the ambulance members at all, and it's hard to run a corps when the leadership doesn't want to. And that's just the tip of the ice berg, they've been having issues for years.

  5. 1000 gallons ..... tanker ?

They can call it what ever you want, but that's not enough water to be a tanker.

It's a Rockland County thing, they seem to have a very strange numbering system. All apparatus in the county starts with the department number for Tallman, 20. Then each engine is numbered by the GPM of the pump, in this case 2000. So the rig number should be 20-2000. However, like most departments, Tallman has three engines, each pretty much the same with each having a 2000 GPM pump, so they then start numbering engines as 20-2000, 20-2001, etc. I'm assuming Tallman, like a lot of Rockland County departments, calls this engine 20-tanker to avoid having another 20-2000 series engine and make it clearer on the radio what engine is coming.

  6. I have a question about NYS civil service eligibility tests. I recently took the NYS DMV motor vehicle investigator trainee exam and was looking at the eligibility list still up from the last exam to see if they were hiring and how many they had hired. I found two things odd on the old list. First, it says the list they currently have posted, from 2008 is good till 2016, so does that mean that they exhausted that list so they needed a new list? Secondly, there are only two people listed as appointed on the eligibility list, and everybody else on the exam has a status of active, including the highest score on the exam. Does this mean that all these people got passed over/deferred appointment of the exam? Or is it if they have numerous people with the same score (100) they go to a lottery style drawing to see who processes next?

    Thanks

  7. So lately I've seen a bunch people in my VAC buying and using cheap Chinese multiband portable ham radios (BaoFeng) that can monitor all emergency agencies in our county. Now, as i understand it, these portables should be in violation of NYS VTL section 397, which prevents equipping a vehicle with a device that can receive police signals. As i understood it, this basically means that any device, mobile or hand held that can monitor police frequencies is illegal and can get you in trouble. So, is there something I'm missing here? Is the portable radio okay, because technically it's being used under the license of the VAC? And if it can be covered under the VAC license, why can't a scanner be used under the same license? Thanks in advanced

  10. A) you can't block specific IDs. if the buses are programed into the scanners as a separate group, you can go into the bus group and set a permanent lockout.

B ) Easy fix. Set a quick key (such as "1") for the system. Then if you want to listen to the system, you press "1" and the scanner scans the system. When you're done listening to the system, press "1" again and the scanner stops scanning the system.

  11. While I understand the idea that she doesn't think her next door neighbor should see her in such a position, if her next door neighbor is an EMT then that is part of what he is trained for. Years ago in a RIT class I took with one of our female members. Most of the students could not bring themselves to get close enough in training to do some of the rescue methods on her. The instructors went over that with us and basically said if you can't get over your modesty in an emergency someone may die. If I were part of any of the EMS services that cover that part of Brooklyn I would be somewhat insulted that they thought so little of my ethics.

I guess I'm not sure why you're getting upset over the fact that this is an all female volunteer corps. This is a culture that places much more importance on modesty and separation of male and female than most cultures in the U.S.. Now yes, every EMT, male or female, gets all the same training to handle any emergency we come across, and we all conduct our selves in a professional manner. However, some times people are just comfortable with care providers of the same sex. Think about it this way, your a middle age man, you walk into the urologist's office cause you're experiencing erectile dysfunction, you walk into the exam room, and the doctor's a 29 year old woman. Are you really gonna tell me that you'd feel just as comfortable talking about your ED to a young woman as you would a man? Also, anyone one who is going to call this corps is most likely also going to be calling Hatzalah, who are the same culture, and are going to understand. Plus, isn't making the patient comfortable part of any EMS job? Finally, I don't think they're trying to question anyone's moral, rather they are just looking for someone who understands and follows their wishes based on their religion and culture.

  13. What VAC's have been brought back after being shut down?

I'd be more upset that my loved one may not get an ambulance because of hurt feelings when a professional agency is ready and able to do it. Chester VAC was billing too, this isn't about the billing.

New Windsor. And I completely agree with your point, but honestly, alot of people right now only care about using the cheapest option, until they need an ambulance, and then they get upset.

  14. Who is this guy and more importantly who's advising him !

It sounds to me like this guy's lawyer has no clue about the various state laws that apply in this situation. If he did, he'd never have allowed this lawsuit to get off the ground.

The last time i heard, Chester VAC was being advised through this process by an individual who has already had success at bring back VACs that were shut down. I don't know if this individual is still advising chester, but if he is, I wouldn't be surprised if this is part of some strategy.Secondly , even though the lawsuit might be bs, look at the publicity it generated and how it makes the town of chester and mobile life look. If I were a citizen of chester who was just basing my knowledge of the situation based off what I read in the paper, I'd be pretty upset to think that the town was letting a private company make money off the citizens, rather than use a volunteer corps.
