When I used to volunteer upstate I got pulled over by a sheriff deputy while responding to an apartment fire with people trapped:
Officer (as he approaches my window): "I hear you got a scanner in there."
    Me: "It's my pager."
    Officer: "What are you doing?"
Me: "I'm going to a fire."
    Officer: "Where is the fire?"
Me (pointing to the orange glow in the sky): "There."

Often, the when and where the plasma cutter or petrogen (similar to oxycetelyne in its properties) are used is more often than not dictated by the situation. Neither would be used for ordinary extrications.
What is dismaying is that you said it looks like it has never been used. That to me means that no one has trained on it. If that is the case, it Shouldn't be used at an actual incident!!!
What is the plan? Are you going to assign one member to be the cutter and another to read the instruction book?
Get yourselves some training by someone in the Fire Service that is well trained and ask him to give you a few lessons. Then get some scrap metal and practice...practice...practice.
    Or sell your equipment.

Read it again guys, I said allow members access to gas at the price the AHJ pays for it, not give it to them for free. Allow them to pay the 60 cents less a gallon for gas/fuel so they don't get murdered as much responding.

  15. fireboyny liked a post in a topic by JohnnyOV in How well is F.A.S.T. working in Westchester F.D.s?
Chief, I'd like to completely ditto this post. verbatim. We work exactly the same way, only with a designated time we allow for us to get on the road with the minimum manpower.
Calling FAST early has reduced their response times to our district, and I strongly urge other departments to implement policies like this as well. It is probably one of the most proactive, and smart moves we've made in a long time.
  16. fireboyny liked a post in a topic by sjc317 in How well is F.A.S.T. working in Westchester F.D.s?
The one thing that I don't think is a great idea is when a department calls for a fast for a working fire and then puts them to work. I think thatafter a fast is on the scene and is established, they should remain as the fast. If you need more manpower, then go m/a for manpower and not another fast. There is no sence in putting them to work after they are there and then waiting for another fast to show up. Kinda defeaats the purpose.

I gotta start bitc****portable radios DONT save lives what saves lives is knowledgable people on scene that do good work fast. We got a problem in our county that everyone is fast to talk on the radio and not get what needs to be done, done. Chiefs cars provide people on scene quickly Furthermore ALL the departments that i know of, the chiefs are at the majority of calls, and when not on a run handle operations at the firehouse. As a chief they are dedicating there lives to making sure the firehouse runs smoothely so whats the problem with providing them nice and new cars to do there jobs.
  20. fireboyny liked a post in a topic by JohnnyOV in Ladder Safety Class Goes Wrong
This is simple physics, and a dumb idea. The point at which your center of gravity passes over the moment (the feet of the ladder acting as the pivot point) the object is going to tip in that direction. Any idiot could have realized this, and these guys obviously are mo-rons.
If this were to be bought by a company, and an employee were to actually violently fall off the ladder, it would have never stood a chance of holding him up. The momentum of the employee would pendulum swing him out and away from the moment, causing the ladder to fall even harder then it did in the video. Although, it would probably be a little bit softer then just free falling to the ground.
A majority of ladder accidents come from over extending the person out and away from the moment of the ladder. This device is completely useless since it works best in a vertical fall, directly down the center of the ladder, and not to the side.
