The new Engine 58 2010 Pierce Puc has now been in service just over one year. We [truck comm] took a big gamble with this type of pump and body but the rig has performed great with only one half day out of service with a leaking front wheel bearing. It has been very busy with 5 jobs just this last few weeks and the guys like working off of it

In my opinion you shouldn't be trying so hard to have elaborate gas schemes to keep members. A volunteer does it because they like to. Telling someone that they are going to get 40 cents off their gas isn't going to keep that person around. Sometimes all it takes is a thanks for the good job, a couple of t-shirts, maybe a dinner? Just a little bit of recognition and thanks for all the work they do can go along way.

Has anyone looked in to the possibility of providing gas for members cars for volunteering? It seems like a no brainer to me as a retention tool. I would think the only hard part is managing the distribution. This program would give members gas or diesel at the price the AHJ pays for it, allowing members to have a nice savings over gas at the local pump. With prices not going any lower and the economic outlook not any better this would be a great program, kind of like that health care program that never materialized.

Thank you for all those kind words. I sure do appreciate it.
On Monday October 17th I went to a doctor in New London, Ct. I thought that he'd check me out and send me home with a few pills. Instead I was transported to the Lawrence & Memorial Hospital by the New London Fire Dept ambulance. The two fire fighters who transported me each had less than a year on the job. But they sure were Great.
Word spread that a retired firefighter from nearby Norwich, Ct was taken to the hospital. Those New London, Ct firefighters made it a point to get my car from the doctors office to the more safer firehouse parking lot. One brought in a scanner for me to listen to. They visited me Everyday to check on how I was doing, and offer any assistance they could. Everything from driving me home when the time comes, to helping me with grocery shopping. What a Great Group of Guys. Exactly what this Brotherhood thing is all about.
My Brothers a little farther to the north from Norwich did the same thing. I had visitors from the dept both Active and Retired. One guy visited me almost Every day. In fact there were two guys that came on the job afer I retired that came down to visit.
I had a Retired FDNY Captain and his wife stop by to visit. He had worked some of the busiest companies in the FDNY during their busiest so called War Years. A "War Years Warrior". That certainly was an honor.
My point is that this Brotherhood thing is Alive and Well. From the newest probie to the oldest retiree. Or from city to city. The Brotherhood is Alive and Well. The nurses could not believe the number of firefighters that showed up. I explained to them about this Brotherhood thing.
And I certainly can Not begin to say how very Greatful I am to those dedicated and highly skilled nurses and aides that cared for me during my eight day stay. We ride by hospitals everyday and in every city in America. From the outside we never really give much thought to it as to the care and compassion that goes on behind those walls around the clock, everyday of the year. I saw those nurses working on a poor guy who was in pain and apparently had a serious speech problem. Those nurses worked on him for a long time and finally he was able to rest. Their skills and knowledge are helping us in our time of need and saving lives everyday. They really are Our Guardian Angels.
For myself, it is a bit of a kidney issue and a well needed "tune up". I need to go back again for a few test and have a few things taken care of. But I think its just a matter of time when I'll be back in the streets buffing the Bronx again.

    Joe,
    I truly appreciate your input.
However, I just want to reiterate we have tried strategy after strategy for 8 years now to keep this site civil. It's a fine balance. No matter what we do, it's wrong to some people (not you) and they throw unfair accusations our way. I've probaly been labeled everything in the book.
As staff, we basically just enforce policy, and if members were respectful towards one another and kept things positive and constructive, then we wouldn't have problems. And sometimes, I behave like some of the members, and I get called on it by another staff member.
We have a really strong team of staff on this forum that basically works 24/7 handling everything that goes on in this forum. Every one of our staff members has a lot of responsiblity and a high workload, and this site wouldn't be here if it wasn't for them. We all work together on everything that goes on with this site, as there is a LOT of behind the scenes phone calls, emails, reported content, etc that goes on. We try to be as accesible as possible to our members and their concerns.
And, it really bothers me that more members don't show appreciation towards our staff, regardess, for the above reasons.
As for me, yes, I can make the final decisions and overide certain things, but I rarely do (like below). The all-volunteer staff of this site does a good job with operations and policy. If I have an idea, I will present it for discussion. I spend A LOT of time keeping this site funded, and doing the technical work on the forums, maintaining the server, etc. I also handle a lot of other administrative things which keep me quite busy. I also have a busy life beyond this site. That's why having such a great staff on the same level with moderation policy and supports me and this site is crucial.
I love a lot of the good that this site has done, and believe we can always improve and be better, and I still spend every free minute that I can thinking about and working on this webite. Keeps me up for hours some nights. Sometimes, I will hire a babysitter so I can get the work on the site I need done, whether it is fixing a bug, helping members with log in problems or name changes, keeping up with advertisers invoices, trying to get new advertisers, some which I have to design ads for. I also just launched a site which I am very proud of that I have a lot of ideas for the concept that allows people who don't or can't use this forum to still be "in the know".
Now, I usually discuss this with the staff before making this kind of decision.....but I would like to offer you a spot as a Moderator on these forums. I handpick staff based on what I see would be right for the site, and I think you'd be a great addition, as do the 22 people and probaly more who repped you. That way, you can see what goes on behind the scenes, and help to influence the policy on this forum from your viewpoint. Email me to seth@emtbravo.com if you want to take me up on this and help out this site. It's rare that a member comes along and cares enough about this site to make a resepectful post like yours, and I hope you will step up and accept the offer. You have also been a longtime member of this site and have demonstrated your ability to offer guidances in a productive manner.
    Seth G.
    Founder, EMTBravo
P.S.: Please, anyone interested in becoming a staff member now or in the past can contact me VIA EMAIL at seth@emtbravo.com . I can't "overstaff" any more right now, but I will build a list for consideration based on what I feel the strengths of the kind of member that I need for a certain roles. It's nothing personal, and many of you I have considered but I can't make every great member a staff member....then we'd have no members!
(BTW-wraftery I really liked your post as well!)

Description: Bicyclist w/o brakes failure to yield to WPFR E62

Man on bike that didn't have brakes attempted to pass E62 while it was turning and was killed. 51 year old fire vet not charged. Many witnesses walking, biking, commuting.
May the man on the bike and his family have peace. May the chauffeur of E62 (which is first due to my home) press on in light of this terrible accident. He has been on the job for many years and is a valuable asset to WPFR.

1st picture is Bridge City Vol. Fire & Rescue Brush 5. Same picture featured.....figured I'd add it just cause It's one I have at the moment, took it the other day out of boredom .
The next set of pictures is BCFR's new Marine 1. 1st few are from delivery day. All pictures from my Droid X. It's a custom built aluminum boat with twin 150's counter rotating, a radar / sonar system. 2 remote spot lights. and 4 roof vent fans. We just got it in a few months ago. Great boat. It was built by Lobell's Custom Boats in Louisiana. It's the first boat they've ever built for an emergency service. It also has two 6 foot wide doors on each side that drop down for a dive / rescue platform.
From order to delivery took about 6-8 weeks.
We also just got in a Ford f-450 that will be used mainly for towing the boat. It was delivered yesterday. As soon as we get the striping done and emergency lighting installed I'll have pictures for it.
