The Troopers were the first to arrive. Yes, the police often respond to emergencies in the rural parts of the state. This being a Friday afternoon, just before Christmas in a sparsely populated town with a well hidden from road/view structure the fire had a lot of headway before it was discovered. The person who discovered the fire actually drove to the volunteer firehouse to report it, found no one there and used the emergency phone to notify 911. The fire department was finally called, and almost immediately called 3 more departments under mutual aid for assistance. There is not a career fire department within sight of southern Columbia County. Troopers arrived initially and updated 911. The fire department did eventually show up with an engine, a tanker and a rescue each with a driver. With the limited manpower and some more enroute from neighboring departments with extended ETA's, the IC asked the Troopers for assistance to try to keep the fire from extending to the other portion of the house. The Troopers, 3/4 who are volunteer firefighters with chief officer experience and training obliged with permission from their supervisor. When enough fire personnel arrived, the Troopers were relieved and re-assumed their law enforcement roles.
Maybe not the best situation, but it happened, happened safely and they did do some good. Let's face it, this fire was the biggest thing going on in Columbia County at the time and the 2 speeders that got away on the Taconic during the time the Troopers were manning the hoseline will be caught next time.
As someone who takes a lot of fire pics in the Greene & Columbia areas I see the cooperation between law, fire and rescue squads all the time. You look up here at fire scenes and say "What the ....??" and I look at operations in the "Metro" areas and just scratch my head.
And Truck12345 seriously? Bill the FD for the Troopers time?? Maybe we should send bills to the NYSP every time we have to sit at a wire down on a STATE road and wait for NiMo or CH?? Maybe the next time we need the Troopers to help close a road so we can lay supply line across the street, maybe they won't be there.
I'm proud and happy that these Troopers were able to help and were not so disgruntled and screwed up that they just looked crosseyed at the Chief and said "Sorry dude. Not my job."

I can't understand why you are getting so defensive and taking this so personal. The idea of this was to be an intelligent discussion, not a foot stomping tirade. I come to work, do my job, and go home. Thank you for taking care of the ESU injured member, I think anyone, PD or FD would provide these care for eachother in that same situation. We may wear different patches, but we're all human.

What is wrong with you, I hope you don't think you represent every FDNY member on this board, if you do it's a sad day for FDNY (I am NOT FDNY) You are an embarrassment to every FDNY member and every fire fighter EVERYBODYGOES it’s time you followed them and went yourself

You can disagree all you want, that's fine with me. I'm simply expressing my opinion that I think the FD should be there as an extra set of hands to work along side the EMS crews. If you want to do everything on your own and turn down the ability to have extra help to lighten the load, then that's on you.

Sorry but I have to comment. In a VOLUNTEER district when a call comes in for a lift assist it should be first answered by police. They take the call and do the dispatch. There are many more police officers on duty in cars than there are vehicles for ems. When the call comes in IF the caller indicates that there is an injury or medical need then of course dispatch the ambulance. If the call is just to help the party back into a chair or bed then the call can and should be handled by police. Once again...should the called indicate a need for medical treatment fine then send the ambulance but DON'T send them and tie up the only EMS crew in the district for a LIFT unless the first responder requests one.

I do not agree with this at all. I certainly have the Highest Respect for Any State Troopers or City/Town Police officers for that matter.
The fact that if they get hurt, this is Not their job. And who is guarding the hen house while these Troopers fight this fire. If I saw this nd wanted to commit a crime somewhere on their beat, I know there could be a delayed response giving me a better chance to get away with it.
If they were firefighters dressed in civilian clothes doing this, we would be the first to critize them for not wearing the proper gear.
I think Somebody mentioned that they were glad that a State Trooper took the hose line and started to fight the fire. Did I read that right ? A firefighter was glad that a State Trooper took the hose line to fight the fire. Should a firefighter take a gun from the Troopershands and shoot a suspect ? It doesn't make sense to me reading that.
I don't think any State Trooper should be honored for doing this. And personnelly if I was the Chief, I'd be speaking to their supervisor explaining why Firefighters fight fires and not State Troopers.
If I was going for surgury, would I want my electrician who just put in a new fuse panel to open my heart.
I really can not believe some people would agree with this. Maybe they ment well, but should I be pulling cars over for speeding, or should I leave that for the people who are trained (and paid) to do it.

Good idea, but it will never happen.
There are enough scuba teams in the area, the county really doesn't need one. Yes, the response time may be a little on the down side, but thats another story. Somers responded to Mamaroneck with a full scuba team last summer( they dont have too many scuba members at all) and got to the scene within 20 minutes, and thats response time also. And by then, many departments SCUBA were already there.
Do we really need to get into discussion about the county? By the time they have assembled and responded, what, it'd save 5-6 minutes? Really not worth it, on my opinion.

Why do you think they would be called more than already established and highly trained teams?

Foam is only allowed to be used on the property during true emergencies due to the close proximity to wetlands and Rye Lake.
