  1. I think we saw in Katrina and possibly other disasters that people are not going to abandon their pets. They stay in their residence with their pets until the "oh s***" hour in which case lots of times its too late to call emergency services. It makes totaly logical sense that the law was passed so that if people know they can bring Fido with them to a dry safe place they will be more inclinded to do so before that "oh s***" hour. It will save ememgrency services a lot of time and resources and be safer for the public and the first responders. As far as the whole pet rescue squad vs EMS debate one has nothing to do with the other. I do not know all that much about the EMS service except the fact that every time me or my family have called for a bus they have arrived and been extremly professional and life saving...literaly! Thank you to all of our VAC's and career companies who do a bang up job in Westchester and throughout! Also, I dont see why the county can't have volunteer special opeation's squads. I am sure the members are professional, knowlegable and dedicated as mentioned above in Croton and other incidents throughout the area. Thank you for your service. It's also great that we have Yonkers and Greenburg career guys in SOC as well. Just makes the county's emergency service that much better. And on a side note I dont see FDNY RES3CUE Big Blue responding into Westchester any time soon!

Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act of 2006 - Amends the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act to require the Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to ensure that state and local emergency preparedness operational plans address the needs of individuals with household pets and service animals prior to, during, and following a major disaster or emergency. Authorizes the Director to: (1) study and develop plans that take into account the needs of individuals with pets and service animals prior to, during, and following a major disaster or emergency; and (2) make financial contributions, on the basis of programs or projects approved by the Director, to the states and local authorities for animal emergency preparedness purposes, including the procurement, construction, leasing, or renovating of emergency shelter facilities and materials that will accommodate people with pets and service animals.   3. I wonder how many people/agencies know this. I had no idea of the mandate till it was posted here. It would be good to get that word out to the general public so they can plan more accordingly in case they need to evacuate. With the recent hurricane none of the news agencies reported that every shelter by Fed. mandate had to accept your pets. With the mandate, shelters now need a game plan to provide for these pets. In my opinion it's a great mandate that I think will save lives. Pets are a big part of the family and have huge emotional attachment. I don't know how many people could honestly just walk out on their pets to fend for themselves. I know I couldn't with my two Dalmatians.

  6. There was a topic on here about a month or so ago from a member of a dept who said that their dept was in high need of "new" apparatus because there fleet was something like 30 years old. My question is how does FDNY depose of the there old apparatus and are they in any condition to continue to serve? If so might be nice for them to sell them at a big discount to dept's who fleet is crappier then the used FDNY rigs.

  8. Fire District tax. That was the 1969 Mack Engine 28 no longer part of the fleet. Eastchester bought and old rig from Hartsdale I think about 3 years ago. Its the only yellow rig in the fleet!
  9. Engine 28 is also housed with Ladder 16 at Eastchester station 2 in Tuckahoe. It was taken out of day to day service about 8 or so years ago and is now the reserve engine
  10. Horrible senerio you would be faced with. I wonder if the high winds and the large amount of rain would supress the fire enough that it would not spread or would it be the reverse and the wind helps it jump. With those high winds I would think you would be limited in some of your resourses. I would think that you would not put a stick or a bucket up in the exteme high winds. Also, would your water stream be hampered by the wind and a good percentage if it just blow away? Another thing I think of if it's an interior attack would the wind put the crews at a greater danger in that a window could blow out at any moment thus possibly pushing the fire back on them? It would be an incredibly hard job and the IC would need to think outside the box.
  11. I have many models including most of the Diamond Plate's. I hade a feeling things were not right when they did not release a new Diamond plate in over two years. I agree that a Towel Ladder and a Rescue as welll would have been cool in the Diamond Plate series. I thought that they should have contunued with the firehouses as well! Also when they had massive problems with the second Philly SQURT you got an idea that things were not well in Code 3 land. I agree that all the FDNY rigs were becoming very repiticious though they had some wicked cool rigs like the Super Pumper system. Not looking forward to the jacked prices pepole will sell Code 3 on E-bay.
  12. Hope PO Hess sues the hell out of him for defamation of character. Leave well alone already. I mean Mr. Sharpton never got involved in this case. I have always been curious as to why. I beleive the answer is that he knew Henery was in the wrong and had to case to flaunt around. Can't wait to hearwhat Snooze 12 has to chime in with.
  13. If you wore your cover like that in the military I am just about certain there would be some sort of charges brought against you. Since the FD is a para military institution and the FD uniform is modeled after those of the Navy maybe it should be the same with charges. It's so disrespectful to wear it like that. Its not a grungy old baseball cap on a hot summer day as you mow the lawn. It's the a symbol that you are a firefighter and it should be worn with respect and distinction or dont wear it at all and stand on the side walk as a spectator.
  14. THe way i look at it the volunteer firefighter can get the same amout of hours as a career academy. It is just broken up into classes that usualy run for a few weeks two night per week. I think that it is up to each department to make sure that all of its members get registered for these courses. We all know that problem is/was that the classes are filled almost instantaniously and signing up for them can be quite challenging. There is a quota for each dept as well. I think the state and the county needs to offer these course more then once a week. Also I think that there should be a downstate academy as well. It was great when some trainning was being done at Camp Smith it is a lot more local then Montour Falls. We should thank the career brothers for choosing this as there career and we should help the volunteers get as much training as they can get in the most convienent way possible.

  18. Sorry if I came across a little strong..... just dont want to see a registered landmark be lost. I know the boat had a major renovation a few years ago. I just think it would make a great part of the Intrepid Air and Sea museum or something like that. If I had the $$$ I would love to buy it....lol
  19. Ahhhh so we take a piece of American firefighting history and what cut her up for scrap? Thank God for people like those who run the John J. Harvey and treasure American history not people who want to get rid of it. So I am guessing your not a big fan of history and preserving our past so we can learn from it to teach our future. If you really read what I wrote I said it would be nice to see it go a museum like institution.
  20. I hope that something good will happen with the original Firefighter. She is a national historic landmark. She started her tour of duty in 1932! I think it would be cool if she became part of the Intrepid museum or something like that. There is a lot of history in her.
