    None of us need that extra crap. We still have to get there, so you can add all of that along the way. "Pt mle 60 yrs can't breeth" is all I need to start going. If along the way you want to tell me he's 'coofing flem, 'wheezeling', 'dissy', 'has the sugar', or whatever else can be gleaned from the caller and scrambled by the CRO, thats great. I'd still rather have someone with zero medical training but 8th grade reading level following the EMD cards and updating me.

    Yeah. Like radioreference, there isn't one frequency for the city of Yonkers FD or the city of Camden FD, just Southern Westchester Fire and Camden County Fire, but you might get lucky and pick of a job here and there from both.
    I would assume the same app as for the iPhone(5-0 Radio Police Scanner).

    5-0 is the best is what I have found to be the best app out there for the IPhone world. I have heard about the paid version which allows you to record hours worth of chatter on the radio, also has some more gadgets to it. The free version is good enough for me, I can listen to NYPD, FDNY, Putnam 911, Dutchess, etc. without a problem. Just a few seconds delay but it does not screw up as badly as some of those other ones do.
    So all in all, 5-0 looks like your best choice for the IPhone. Don't ask me about any others for any other phones because I haven't a clue!

    Same here. I finally got out of the stone age and bought an iPhone. Before that, I had a go-phone from Best Buy.
    Anyhow, I was in the same boat, and found a really great scanner ap called 5-0 Radio Police Scanner(The one that says "Utilities" under it).
    You can hear pretty much anything that's on radioreference.com. FDNY comes in great, and you can listen to any FD anywhere.

    OK...so i JUST entered the modern world and got an iPhone...and I want one of those cool, buffy scanner aps..
    Looking to be able to get Dutchess County frequencies....and on occasion, if I am REALLY buffy...FDNY, Yonkers, etc...
    What is the best ap out there for said buffing?

    Some more info for you.. The ani-ali, which is the location info from calls received gives the nearest cell site that the signal is transmitted from if you use a cell phone.. If we are lucky to get what is called a phase 2 ani-ali, then we get a latitude and longitude.. So when you call 911 from a cell phone, alot of the time, all we have for location is the closest antenna that you hit.. Landlines give the exact address...

    wheres the trike from? maybe (as their excuse) they're from florida or conneticut and always drive it without one. it is still against the law and unneccesary in front of NEW YORKERS WHO NEED HELMETS to represent such a thing. when i was in florida i would always wear a helmet when i was riding my harley, always a supporter of that
    when i was chief back in 2011, our department did not give uniforms to younger members. we had juniors and we had explorers. those females seem to be awfully young, i dont believe they are trained firefighters, if they werent in our dept they didnt get a uniform. yes they could of dressed up more, but i have seen them dress like that many times. its still unprofessional and embarrasing to the department but it is what it is
    the guys on the rigs are as they say "tools" and "showoffs" how about get off your lazy a$$ and represent your department professionally. who knows they probably texting to ha ha

    Even if the calltaker was unfamilar with the location of the 79th St Boat Basin, The reporting party called on a cell phone. Doesn't the calltaker have the ability to locate the phone? Not necessarily the calltaker himself, but at least someone with something on a supervisor screen?

    While doing a swimming event on the Hudson today with 25 other folks, one of the swimmers had a problem, she couldn't see. Now it may sound stupid, but it seriously wasn't. At first she just thought she got lots of sunblock in her eyes and tried rinsing it. But after 15 minutes of trying to see again, it was time to get advanced help. I went over with one of the boats and carefully pulled her onto the vessel. I was with another guy. He said "Ok, i'll call 911" and I said "Ok, tell then we will meet at the 79TH STREET BOAT ACCESS. He called and said it not only once, but 4 different times. Each time with more and more information describing exactly where it was. The dispatcher replied the following.
    1st: "Ok, so the boat is in distress?" He replied "No ----"
    2nd: "Please hold"
    3rd: "So you have an assault victim AT the Boat Area on 89th street?" at this point he was fed up. He said "give me an ambulance to 79th street boat access area, we have a bad situation"
    4th: "Ok" and then we told them our phone number and if they need anything call. and then hung up..
    After 10 minutes, he recieved another call from them. This time it was a different dispatcher, and they said " your requesting an ambulance to what location?" and he told them AGAIN. So then that one requested an ambulance to the scene, and within 4-5 minutes units were o/s
    This just annoyed me because NYC spent loads of money getting the system as best as can be, and this is how it works? I thought it'd be much better than this.
    I know some of you FDNY folks, (or not) are gonna say "oh it was one person" yeah it may have been but look at the bill it cost NYC to get the new system, they should be highly trained and ready to get a report and dispatch the appropiate unit.
    Any thoughts? This is not meant to bash on the FDNY or NYPD about their dispatchers, it's just sad and more dangerous to have oblivious people answering emergency phone calls. If somebody was in a cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest, and happened to deal with someone like this, the person would most likely be dead or close to it.

    I don't have an issue with career firefighters. I have an issue with you.
    I, and so many more people, have grown tired of you only speaking up on these forums to beat your drum and stand atop your soapbox to deem all volunteer fire departments as incapable, lying, deceitful organizations. You think because you use big words and generally have ample grammar in your posts, that all of us are blind to your obvious dismay for the majority of us.
    The issues ongoing in the Irvington FD are being beaten to death here with no true resolve. I agree with you that it's noble of the gentleman involved to stand for what he believes in. Just as I think anyone who stands up for what they believe in is honorable, because let's face it, too many people would rather not take a position on something and join the majority (drink the Kool-Aid, if you will).
    Anyone that doesn't see you for who you really are and for the views you have of us evil volunteers is either naive or blind. We aren't perfect, not a single one of us is, but do you really, honestly think that coming on here and playing your game is solving anything? And am I alone on these forums to think that this story in Irvington is going to have little or no impact on anything?
    There's so many more things in this world and in what we do that need our attention. And for me, those issues are ensuring we all are offering the best fire prevention training, fire safety education, strict code enforcement and adequate response to any emergency we're called upon - regardless of the community, department and whether or not those sworn to do these tasks is paid, period.
    You're an intelligent man from what I can tell, with a wealth of knowledge and experience that could help better the fire service. Do you really think spending your time trying to dissect and disassemble the volunteer fire service is helping ANYONE?

    Sorry but NYS doesn't decide who does and doesn't take training. Each individual volunteer fire department establishes its minimum training requirements and decides if they're going to enforce them. Do you have any idea how many times I heard officers saying "well, he's not meeting the training requirements but he's a nice guy (or) he shows up at calls". So they let a substandard member skate based on popularity. And without training what good is he showing up anyway!
    Career departments have a state mandated training program that every firefighter must complete before being called a firefighter.
    This disparity and the ongoing opposition to any minimum training standard for volunteer FF's in NYS is what fuels this stupid us vs. them BS. So long as there are two different training standards and absolutely no enforcement of the one on the volunteer side of the house there will be this argument. You know why paid and volunteer guys get along so easily in other places? Because they all have the same training!
    If you don't have the time to get the training, you shouldn't be responding to emergencies. Do you go to an auto mechanic who doesn't have any training or do you want your car fixed by someone that actually knows what's wrong with it. Untrained people on the fireground are hazards to us all but we don't do anything about it. In fact we support organizations that fight against common standards, common training, and a single definition of FF.
    So what you get up when the tones drop? That's what you signed up for. Do the job but do it right whether you collect a paycheck or not!
    People are merely pointing out that the excursions to Lake George and extravagant parties at the Ritz and other similar places are what make people suspicious of the use of funds. Some of these parties are over the top and wildly expensive. That's a tough one to sell to the public in this economy. That's the point.
    How much was spent on these parties over the five year span. If it's a 100K that's a lot of training, equipment or reductions in tax subsidies.
    And don't forget the additional "tax" we all pay that gets squandered - the 2% monies!
