This the second great article I have read this week authored by Ed Rush, the other being in IAFC newsletter about recruitment , you can always tell the writings of a Stepinac man.

Excellent, to-the-point piece on this important matter and why the legislation is direly needed.
This op-ed letter was written to and published by the Journal News/LoHud.com by Chief Ed Rush of the Hartsdale Fire District.

As the primary recruiter here in Stamford I can only say this: I will seek out anyone, anywhere....I don't care where you live, what your race is, what religion you practice or don't or what's between your legs...if you're willing and able to do the work we need you to do, than I'm happy to have you. If a department needs members (and who doesn't) and they don't tap ALL the resources they have available to them, than they're committing suicide...it may be slowly or it may be quickly but the end result will be the same, their organization will end up in the dustbin of history.
OK, that said, let me also add that making our VFDs more diverse does not have to mean we are turning our backs on our history and traditions. Sure, diversity can mean the end of "our culture" as we know it, especially if prejudices and ignorance hold sway, or diversity can enhance, strengthen and reinforce our culture to not only stave off our own extinction, but make it better...the choice is up to us. The responsibility for what our VFDs are now and what they can become rests squarely on our shoulders, no one else. We CAN embrace diversity and still remain who we are, but it takes willingness and work. It is the job of those of us who ARE our organization now to pass along our history, our traditions and our culture, those things that define us, to those who are coming along after us and who WILL BE our organizations in the future, even if they don't look like us or practice our religion or use the same restroom...for if we don't, we won't have a future

Written by Ed Rush, Chief of the Hartsdale Fire District. Local departments are discussed in the article, and this is something I've always wondered about myself, and I agree with the points in this article. Thanks to snotty for the heads up on this piece.

First off, I'd like to say I am NOT "armchair quarterbacking" last night's fire in Briarcliff. The departments were on the run card that responded did so with plenty of manpower on each rig very quickly, as I am told.
I've noticed, over the past several months, there have been a lot of fires in Battalion 12 that Archville and Pocantico Hills haven't been called for, either to the scene or to relocate. In many cases, they were the closer units and not even called.
I know these are tiny departments with very low call volume, do they still, and again this is not a knock at them, have enough interior firefighters? Or is it because their location is kind of strategic and they can cover several fire districts from where they are if another call comes in? Maybe that's the way the run card works?
I know I'm going to be told I'm not owed an explanation here, but granted, I am curious.

Ideally, yes and I agree. On the same token, volunteers are taking time away from their personal lives and families, something that's increasingly difficult to do. Add on top of the fact these facilities give nothing back to the community, yet tax their resources immensely. How's the guy who's lived in that district for 50 years and is a homeowner who's having a legit heart attack going to feel when he has to wait for a mutual aid ambulance because this one facility has called for the 5th time today for a stubbed toe because the facility nurse called in sick or is on vacation so their protocol is to call EMS instead of covering her shift. That's not fair to anyone.

Why fix what isn't broken? Hartsdale guys know what's best for Hartsdale. This isn't a simple decision or something that can be simply and quickly implemented, it takes a lot of work and a lot of trial and error that can cost lives and property. And obviously, they make good stops in part because of great response times. Just look at the photos posted here of their most recent fires and the quick stops that were made.

I see a lot of people talking here and from what i see all are anonymous, Well I am not i am an ex chief past commissioner of the Somers F.D., residents both member and non members of the F.D, felt it was time for a change. Unfortunately the petition time was missed so we had to do a write in which is 100% legal and a voters right. The people who backed the candidate are tired of the way the Somers Fire District is doing things , You can speculate all you want here but unless you are in the department and live it you don't know.To say the upcoming Chief is not qualified is a bunch of crap!!! The person next in line to be chief holds all of the qualifications required by the SFD and then some. He is also a certified fire inspector and holds the qualifications to be a building inspector. He is currently, and no disrespected intended to the other two chiefs, the ONLY qualified INTERIOR firefighter " bailout certified" in the chiefs office. The qualification he lacks is butt kissing 101 as he stands up for the members and what he believes. The fire district has done some very questionable unethical things recently. Which is why it was time to change the board the person elected id the first in a long time non member of the / a fire department. So a different and open minded perspective can be brought in. I wish her the best of luck and will happily support her.

Couldn't that problem be resolved with a Pumper-Tanker like Bedford Hills Tanker 5? Or make it Bedford Hills Station 2 since they seem to be flush with manpower.

They won't send volunteers to an all career department, but they will go to an all-career department and then have the volunteers cover for career staff? That's hypocrisy.
