  3. Having the pleasure of growing up in brooklyn during the 70's, I remember two major fires in my area. First being the Colonial Masion (this was a humungous catering hall it had about 3 levels all cathrdel type cielings) located on Bath ave across from the 62nd pct. This place burned for almost 2 days stright. I went to school behind the place. They had to evacute the school due to smoke. I remeber having to crawl down the stair case with two firefighters leading use out. That was how bad the smoke was. WHen my friends and I went back to watch a few hours later I remember seeing the old super pumper from tillery st there, and watching it actually tear the brick siding of the upper wall down. The second major fire i saw was a few weeks later. It was on the corner of Bay 26th st and bath ave. There was a big apartment bldg. on the corner. 4 stories and about 12 familes living on each floor. it was an L shaped building. The part that went first was the side street side not sure where it staretd but almost that whole side went up. The the following weak the side on the avenue went up. Out of both fires there where 4 deaths all were dogs. These two fires were determined to be arson. The amazing thing was the both happend early afternoon on a busy avenue in brooklyn. The arsonist was caught red handed about two weeks later trying to set fire to a drug store a few blocks away from the above fires. Thier is alot more to these two stories but will keep it short for reading sake
  4. EMSJunkie thanks for setting me stright, I was not sure
  5. From my understanding is that when the Career Brothers and Sisters are working the Vollies do not respond. In other words if the Career peopel are working 9-5 the Vollies cover after that. I could be wrong but that is how it was explained to me. lets just saythank God no one was hurt during this incident and hopefully it wont happen again.
  6. I was leaving the Pan AM parking lot at JFK going to work when we heard about it. sad sad sad day.

  10. I went to the County a few months ago and asked for a list of classes took, in other words a transcript of classes and was told there is no such thing as this. They said that i should go to the State and get it that they keep those records. Well when i called the State they said they have not recivied any of my County training for the last two years only thing on the state transcript is the 3 classes i took at camp smith. The state has not recived any thing from westchester. So I hope you have better luck then I.
  11. Americn BBQ is really good
  12. As an ex officer of my VAC I happen to like to see our members hanging out at the building playing cards, watching movies, playing X-box, taking care of the rigs, training each other, etc. This forms friendships and lets the people of your Corp get to know each other and form bonds. As far as a member sleeping off a rough night in the building I myself have no problem with that. That person will not be going on calls and I rather have that person walk down from the bar and sleep it off then drive and end up being my next call. Also about Corps not gettting out, yes it is geting harder out there. Less memebers joining, people having less time to volunter. But you have to do what you have to do. The polticans in these areas shoud start looking at ways to improve that issue. Find out why people are not coming out, start memebership drives, etc. I happen to belong to aVAC that is enjoying the benifits of being able to get both rigs out on calls at the same time within 3-4 minutes. Thier has been times were we could man a third or fourth rig but we only have 2.
  13. Since my moms cancer scare is over, My wife and I and my Sister are planning a family trip to Disney with my family my sisters family and mom. 14. like it or not this is only one of four moviesdue out this year about 9/11
  15. I think this is a good idea, I have taken many on line courses from FEMA, DHS, SEMO, and many other aganices. Some are harder then a classroom setting, and many cover what you dont learn in a classroom. There are some faults such as asking questions and missing your fellow brothers and sisters in class and sharing expriences, but overall I think it is a good learning exprience. Of course you can not give all classes on line espically ones that have a pratical end.
  16. not sure about Jersey i am sure there is but i dont know who they are, but if your interested in staten island let me know i know a few there
  17. wow the whole city will be out on strike soon it seems
  18. Good topic Capt. Me myself i am going to take more classes attend more drills. help train our new probies. and most of all get myself into better shape.
  19. The TWU should be ashamed of there selves, how can you do this. Just walk out yoursleves why have an ohter union walk out for you while your workerscollect a pay check. This is not going to do anything, these twobus companies only serve 25000 people between them, It would be different to have them walk in sympthay, but to have them go before TWU 100 even goes is really stupid. I just lost all respect fot them. If your gonna walk then walk, crap or get off the pot
  20. not to start a big career vs vollie arguemnt but, why dont vollies drill with career? I have never heard of any drills like this before. Is there a reason why the vollies and career depts dont drill with each other?
  21. Our department is actually looking into this from the last time i heard. When they build up the GM property and we get our new fire house they were talking about putting in quaters for living in. Not sure where thios stands now if SHAC7301 has more info maybe he can post it.
  22. Let me clear this up right now. This is not to start a battle, or question other departments training procdures. I was just curious why we dont train at drills with each other. Such as the Drill last year at shaft 18 i think its called from my understanding there were no career depts there I could be wrong, and the drill at yonkers race track last week there were no vollies there. Is it a labour issue or is it an insurence issue, or is it that we just dont like each other so you cant come to my party issue. Myself would like to attend some of those drills with other departments but was wondering why vollies and careers do not invite each other to big drills like those mentioned above.
  23. The NIOSH Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program is contacting organizations representing firefighters and rescue workers to tell them that exposure to high temperature environments may cause the loudness of Personal Alert Safety Systems (PASS) alarm signals to be reduced, causing the alarm signal to become indistinguishable from background noise at the incident scene. NIOSH contacted the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Technical Correlating Committee on Fire and Emergency Services Protective Clothing and Equipment and the NFPA Technical Committee on Electronic Safety Equipment to report that during the investigation of four fire fighter fatalities that occurred from 2001 to 2004, PASS alarms were not heard or were barely audible. The PASS alarms had been certified as compliant to NFPA 1982, 1998 Edition, and involved both stand-alone PASS and SCBA-integrated PASS. Initial laboratory testing of PASS by the National Institute for Standards and Technology's (NIST) Fire Research Division has shown this sound reduction to occur at temperatures as low as 300F (150C) and could affect all PASS. However, additional work is required to better characterize the thermal conditions (temperatures and exposure durations) that contribute to alarm signal degradation. While the NFPA Technical Committee on Electronic Safety Equipment has been working to develop appropriate revisions to NFPA 1982 to address this issue, adequate solutions have not yet been presented. The committee, in cooperation with NIOSH and NIST, will continue to study the issue and will incorporate revisions into NFPA 1982 as solutions are developed and consensus around addressing the issue is achieved. PASS has always been a "last resort call for help" for emergency services personnel who are unable to otherwise notify others that they are in distress. The IAFF is advising fire fighters to continue to activate and wear PASS when in hazardous areas of any incident, but to be aware that high temperatures could cause degradation of the alarm signal. Incident commanders should continue to apply all personnel accountability measures at all incidents to assure the safe entrance and exit of personnel from hazardous areas. Direct supervision of operating companies or teams should provide for the safe operating locations of personnel and ensure that members do not "freelance" on the incident scene. IAFF affiliates should report any PASS malfunctions and other problems with PASS functioning to the IAFF Department of Occupational Health and Safety by email at safety@iaff.org or by phone at (202) 824-9304. The IAFF will maintain this information, as well as notify NIOSH and NFPA. Non-IAFF firefighters should have their Chief/Chiefs Office notify NIOSH as well as their State Fire Marshals/Administrators/Commissioners Office of any related issues. For further information regarding the NIOSH Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program (FFFIPP), as well as NIOSH FFFIPP investigation reports go to www.cdc.gov/niosh/firehome.html. Thanks to Homeland Response and the IAFF for these details. This also reminds all of us to RESPECT PASS alarms (and applicable SOP's) and to never allow false activation by "laying" SCBA's/PASS alarms down after operating without disabling the system. How many times have any of us arrived on a scene-and witnessed SCBA's/PASS alarms sounding while simply "laying" there after the user went to rehab...and when that happens-how do we know if a firefighter is in trouble?
