IF the FDNY battalions are anything like the the NYPD RMPs, then it depends where it the city they are assigned. When I worked in Manhattan, we regularly had older RMPs with lower mileage due to the density of population in a smaller area. Our cars would go 5 to 6 years before replacement, depending on conditions. Where I am at now it the Bronx we rack up the miles pretty quick. Our newest van put 41,000 in its first year with us, and now as it is approaching its second year is around 79,000 miles. I have been there for 2 and half years, we have gotten 1 new van and 2 new cars in that time period. From what I have heard, that is normal. Overall the conditions of the cars at those mileages are the same, tired, prone to breakdowns, doors and windows leak, need greater maintenance, etc, the only difference is age.
Yonkers has 2 to cover the city. They probably run nonstop. As was mentioned, what condition are the spares in, if there are any? NYPD spare RMPs are a crap shoot.

I caught these when I had my car serviced at the city garage today. This is spare engine 216, a 1977 Mack CF. This is the twin to ex-engine 217 that was sold earlier this year. (See thread I started 05/17/2012.). The pics are a bit dark due to low lighting.
These pictures were taken by me on 12/12/12.
If someone could size the pics so they fit better I'd appreciate it .

I have just one question for those that are supporting this group as a "right to free speech". Before you make your statement think, put yourself in the place of these families, parent for the most part of 6 year olds. Would you still support their free speech if it was your loved ones funeral that was being protested? A child that was innocently gunned down or teacher protecting a child. How would you feel if you were meet by people saying "God Hates America" and spewing hateful words while you were grieving and trying to spend your last moments with your child or loved one. Is this the memory you would want or does this just add "icing to the cake" of pain that these families are already feeling. It is easy to quote scripture, the Constitution and law but one needs to step back and think before speaking and ponder what if this were me. What would I do? What would I want done? I don't think one person here will say they want the last memories of their loved ones funeral service to be marred with controversy. Just my opinion.

Engine 69 and 91 were staged on E151 St and Concord while their manpower were at work

Engine 82 hit the hydrant on E151 St between Concord and Jackson. I believe they were feeding Tower Ladder 31

Tower Ladders 31 and 17 working the front of the fire building and exposure 4

Here are some photos I took at yesterday's 4th alarm fire at 603 Jackson Avenue in the Bronx. These photos are about an hour into the incident. There was no visible fire at this time, but still heavy smoke. Mostly tower ladders performing hydraulic overhaul, and apparatus on scene. Enjoy!
Across the street from the fire is a school playground, and a large crowd had gathered to watch. Air recon (NYPD Aviation) can be seen above the fire buildings.

Engine 96 took another hydrant the next block over on Concord, and hand stretched a 3 inch line through the playground in case it was needed

Exactly. So to blame it on a lack of religious conviction as Mike Hukabee did (and you endorsed) is pointless. Guess what. This is America. Not everyone believes in the same God or in some cases any God at all. So to imply you must do so to be free from bodily harm, is to me, insane.
Everyone should be safe in school, whether you believe in God or not!

How quickly the ignorant and judgmental in our society come out after something like this. Does anyone else remember the accusation that the "goth" kids were responsible for Columbine? If anyone actually paid attention after the fact, it was quite clear they were not. Nor were they bullied. In fact, they WERE the bullies in their school..
When I was in high school I went to LAN parties and played violent video games. What the hell does that have to do with anything?
Stop trying to find a reason why. There isn't one. There is NO way anyone is going to give you a valid reason WHY someone killed children, BABIES, in their school. An act like that is so atrocious, there's no such explanation out there, you're just going to be disappointed.
The fact is, unless you're a cop involved in this investigation, you don't know a damned thing about what happened here, neither does Mike Huckabee, neither do I. So how about shutting your mouth until the facts come out? "Better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

No, even if it turns out to be true, he has no point.
But if you believe he does, you must also agree with ALL of the following:
-9/11 was the fault of the ACLU, feminisists and gays (Rev. Jerry Falwell)
-Hurricane Katrina was the fault of gays (Pastor John Hagee)
-2010 Haiti earthquakes the reuslt of a "pact with the devil" (Rev. Pat Robertson)
    Shall I go on?

Locked doors may slow someone down or limit their access to large numbers of people. Instead of having everyone running around in the halls creating a (excuse the term) shooting gallery environment, the locked doors and limited numbers in each room reduce the exposure of innocent people and make it easier for the police to secure the environment too. I wouldn't call that cowering in the corner. Unarmed, untrained civilians should seek shelter during something like this. What else would you have them do?
In this case, the suspect seems to have been targeting a very specific person and unfortunately the kids that were with her.
Overall, I think lockdowns work but this guy was intent on completing his mission so the locked door didn't stop him. Unfortunately.

From the same article about the incidents in China...

The simple fact is you can kill multiple people with a knife if that is your intent.
If this lunatic in CT had driven his car onto the playground at recess and run over multiple people would you be calling for a ban on cars next?
We simply don't know how many times guns save the lives of innocent people but I'm reminded of one story about a year ago where a single mom defended herself and her baby by shooting and killing an intruder who broke into her home. There's probably a thread on that story too since the 911 tapes were broadcast on the news and the story got a lot of attention at the time.
Banning LEGAL guns won't stop gun related violence.

The firearms used, 2 handguns, were legally purchased, owned and REGISTERED to a LICENSED person. They were stolen after that person was murdered.
Like most politicians, several people will have knee jerk reactions to this senseless act carried out by a mentally disturbed individual. They will call for all kinds of new laws and regulations when the ones we have still mean nothing the criminal. So China should ban knives. We should make it illegal to own and drive cars because some people choose to drink and drive and kill others.
What would you have us do, ban all private ownership of firearms? Have the government confiscate them? The ONLY thing that is keeping what is left of our constitution intact is the Second Amendment. Without it, and what it provides, the rest of the amendments and the rest of the Constituton stand no chance of surviving for long.
Gov Huckabee said it correctly as have many others in the past. We, as a nation, have pushed God from our schools, work, politics, sports, and just about every aspect of our lives. And then we wonder where He is when something like this happens.
"For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts,....murders....: All these evil things come from within... ." Mark 7:21,23.
My condolances to the many who have suffered loss this tragic day. You will be in my prayers.
