  1. Am I dreaming or is this 1973 all over again ?
  2. Would you please pass the Dunkin Dounuts.
  3. This is a good thing. NIMS creates creates an emergency management structure that all can use. It is logical then that we all need to speak the same language. Plain English does that...no more misunderstandings, no more miscommunications....JUST PLAIN ENGLISH. BTW - 10-75 = Working Fire
  4. Can you say SUPERMAN ? No other matches up.
  5. Ice Cream "Parlors" from the past that were the bomb, but, sadly, RIP: - Beehive Restaurant on 4th Ave in Mt. Vernon. Can taste the hot fudge now. - Jahn's on the Post Rd. in Eastchester across from Lord & Taylors. Anybody for a "kitchen Sink ?" - Huntley Farms in Eastchester below Mill Rd. They would lace the ice cream dish with hot fudge or caramel BEFORE they scopped the ice cream in. - And last, but not least, Dairy Bar on E. Sandford Blvd. & S. Fulton Ave. in Mt. Vernon. A cone there could make any Little League game loss a memory !
  6. Lets think about this now....... Single PSAP Central Dispatch Consolidation of PD's Consoliditaion OF FD's Countywide Medic services..... Hhhhhmmmmmm.....save $$ and improve delivery of services ?????? I think we're on to something here.
  7. The first photo is a '47 or '51 Seagrave that was a retired engine. The booster tank would be filled with foam with numerous 5 gallon cans of 3% foam in the hose bed. I beluieve that this was the foam truck that was dispatched to Brooklyn in the late '70's M/A to FDNY in Brooklyn for a ship fire. The second photo is of Truck 4, a spare truck. It was originally Truck 3. Note that it is a '73 tractor with a '60 trailer. Truck 3 and Engine 3 collided in the early '70's at Sandford Blvd. & S. 4th Ave. while responding to a box. Engine 3 was repaired but Truck 3's tractor was totaled. This tractor, built by American LaFrance, was purchased (a 2 speed transmission - UGH !) and never worked out well. The tractor was actually flooded while at the American LaFrance factory in Elmira, NY. The third photo is of a refurbed Truck 2 and is parked opposite Station 1 on East Lincoln Ave. The refurb project was a mess in that the contractor went "belly up" during the contract and the truck was held hostage. This is the truck that tipped over at a job on N. Columbus Ave and was totaled. Finally, thge last photo is of Engine 5, a 1958 Mack, parked in front of the firehouse at 211 S. 4th Ave. The house house be torn down now and is a vacant lot.
  8. You tell them Jimmy ! Oh, by the way....one more point for dispatching.... ANTICIPATE NEEDS....Try to put yourself at the scene and in the shoes of the IC. View the big picture based upon the sizeup that the IC is relaying to you. How large is the fire building; what are the exposures; is it a wekday or weekend; is there a hydrant system or are tankers required; do I need to relocate apparatus; etc. Get the point ? Use your head and always be prepared ! Don't wait until the roof falls in BEFORE you do something about it. Ciao.
  9. AMEN !
  10. Can you say "PROPANE ?"
  11. Guns don't put out fires....water does. PD's have a mentality to protect the home turf....at all costs. If they could put out fires, they would. Hence delayed calls...on a regular basis. Perhaps there needs to be a consolidation of PD's in Westchester. Maybe that will provide superior emergency services to the good citizens of Westchester.
  12. Let me get this straight.......You're 19 years old and: 1. You don't want to do transports ? 2. You want to drive ? Here's an appropriate response: 1. You need to look for another line of work, Johnny ! 2. Have you taken classes in "Defensive Driving" and "Emergency Vehicle Operations ?"
  13. Is everybody ready to go to low sulfur fuel next year ?
  14. In paid departments, it's all about the the money. In the late '80's, some city administrators determined that they could save labor costs by combining some/all engine and truck companies into one apparatus....the apparatus that does it all. Manpower could be reduced and $$$ saved. In volunteer departments, who generally don't have nearly the same needs for an aerial device, a quint can be worked in very nicely with a standard structure response. It can easily function as an engine or a ladder but not carry as much incidental tools as a standard engine or ladder. Note, however, that for ISO purposes, the apparatus is either an engine or a ladder....but not both ! BTW - My head hurts after reading how LA City operates. Where is Johnny Gage and Roy Desoto when you need them ?
  15. Get over it. The show was pretty good. It's TV drama for God's sake !!!
  16. OK...where are all of you Mt. Vernon folk....I there any pizza in the world better than Johnny's ???
  17. FDMV's new ladder is at Excelsior.
  18. FDMV's Snorkel 1 was not as versatile as you might think. It was big and bulky and often times a 2nd ladder had to be called to jobs to raise it's stick. Snorkel 1 was purchased in the mid 70's after Mayor Tom Sharpe was "upset" when the Pelham Manor Tower was set up at a 5 bagger on the corner of N. 3rd Ave and E. Prospect Ave. He wanted to know why FDMV did not have one.....the rest is history. BTW - FDMV Snorkel 1 (which was really County Snorkel #3) was actually a QUINT: aerial device, ground ladders, pumped (1250 GPM) carried hose and water.
  19. Oh good. Add another PD with what 40, 50 60 sworn officers ?Do you have any idea how much that will cost ? Then build a station, buy cars, guns, radios, etc.......Is Cortlandt as big as Yorktown ?...have the same type of incidents and therefore, needs ? Got any lakes in Cortlandt ? How about a dive team ? Need detectives ? How about a Chief, a Captain or two a few Lieutenants....get the point ? PD's in Westchester need to be consolidated.....better coverage, more specialized units, better chance for advancement. BTW - Buchanan PD backs up someone ?
