Newly acquired, (I didn't see a post regarding this unit, my apologies if it's been posted elsewhere) Deputy Chief's car for Greenwich, CT Fire Department, aka "Car 5".
This was on scene at the Mason Street fire this evening.

I've had the honor and privelege of working under Chief "Fitz" for the last 15 years. His dedication, passion and sheer love of the job is unparrelled. Chief, you will be sorely missed and remembered as one of the "Great" ones. Thanks for making our job the best in the world! Enjoy your retirement.

Another year, another crappy Hess truck. Man i remember when these things were cool. They were real collectors items. now it just something you would pick up at the dollar store. Plus anyone remember when they were actually gas trucks?

You're totally right Willy. It's a product of the fact that morally the fire service has it's act together. Always has. That's at least one good thing left to say about it, be it a big urban job, or a small volunteer outfit way upstate. But I've heard many guys from my dad's generation of firemen say exactly the same thing you just said.
I don't think firefighters could really understand, say 40 years ago, the changes that would be coming in fire prevention, from construction type to alarm systems. We all sneered at gusset plates and truss construction. But also along the way, the construction industry got smarter about many things, particularly for the commercial space. Or hotels. Commonplace sprinkler systems were a game changer.
It's probably never been safer (from a fire perspective) to walk into a huge office skyscraper, or say a large hotel casino in Vegas; than today.
Peoples' memories are short. Even those who are old enough to remember when fires were more common find it easy to put out of their minds. They want to forget the DuPont Plaza Hotel arson fire that killed 97 people, or the MGM Grand fire in Las Vegas that killed 85, or the public assembly catastrophes like The Station fire in West Warwick, RI where they lost 100 kids in a heartbeat. Nobody, save firemen, remembers HappyLand.
9/11 jarred peoples' brains when they saw what could happen. The fire service was the beneficiary of our Brothers' sacrifices. We actually got some respect. That lasted about five years? And now the war is back on against the job. Who could have foreseen they would even go after the F D N Y...are you kidding me?
The guys on the job today have got the fight of their lives to fight; then they have to go put out the fires, do the haz-mat, the wrecks, the ems, the "value enhanced" services. Those of us retired, we've got to stay involved, offer encouragement, and most of all, pass down the traditional stuff...

Want to wish Chief Fitzpatrick the greatest health and happiness in his retirement after 32 stellar years on the job. God Bless you Chief.
He is also being honored in 2012:

Depends on where you work in all actuality. For example...I actually work for the city manager. But in the spirit of the way your question is posed...both. Different sort of relationship..but firefighters work for the Chief and the Chief works for the firefighter, or at least they should by ensuring good policies are there, that they are enforced, and everything possible is done for their safety and well being. Good thread bro.

In my specific situation - Neither.
It wouldn't be appropriate to air the details of our "dirty laundry" on here, but I'll just say that we'd be better off adding a secretary to handle administrative stuff (like payroll and record keeping) and having no Fire Chief at all than where we're at currently.
I work for the community we serve.

So what is this guy trying to do; save wear and tear on a piece of fire apparatus? Is this the crucial cost savings measure? Okay, let's send the ambulance guys/gals in a jeep Wrangler, heck they only needed jeeps in MASH.
Let's send the patrolman out on a Vespa. They come in beautiful shades of blue and you can get ten of them for the price of a patrol car.
"I'm in pursuit of a Mustang...Vespa 1 is in pursuit"...
Let's send the garbage pick-up guys out in....a pick-up. They can just pile it on top.
For recycling, just have the DPW guys dump out the contents of the recycle box on the sidewalk in front of the home, presto you've recycled it.
Carry a PWE in the suburban though. Besides all this other lunacy I've listed, remember if you can't get the fire knocked down with a PWE, you might as well just let the building burn....no chance in saving it. We have to SAVE that rig, you never know how serious a fire we could get in 2014.

While I appreciate firedude posting this up, I say Con Ed has some set to be making charitable donations, while their trucks are out there operating unsafely with one person per rig.
Save the "goodwill gesture" Con Ed...hire some damn workers!

Couple of good things to look at in these photos.
Car fires become pretty routine and this one presented itself with some unusual concerns. The most obvious, of course, is the exposure issue. It's inevitable that you push the fire a bit as you put the hose line on it. Another is that you'd like to attack a care fire at an angle and that wasn't really possible here. Lastly, looks like the truck did a nice job clearing some shingles and what not from the side of the house. Good overhaul.
    Nice job by NRFD.

What sad news this morning. Worcester, Mass. IAFF Local 1009. We all bear witness once again to them getting hit hard. And news of our Brother lost this morning from Mount Vernon. December 8, 2011. Suddenly another infamous date. While we all commiserate here on the site, waiting for news.....a name....mornings like this one always bring you back full circle to other similar mornings.....
Today feels like....The Father's Day Fire.
    Black Sunday.
    Manlius, New York.
It's hard to make sense out of these days. Why?
It reminds me that the career fire service in America is actually not all that huge; and how we are all entwined together with a culture created and passed down through generations of firemen.
I cannot help but to think of the outpouring of respect that will be shown for these Brothers. I cannot help but to think of the absolute devastation that has occurred to two separate families this December morning. The trying days...months...years now put before families who only last evening had holiday plans in the works. Christmas forever changed for a lot of people in an instant.
In 2002 I traveled to Colorado Springs to pay respects at the IAFF National Memorial, hosted by IAFF Local 5, Colorado Springs Firefighters. The day before the Remembrance, I had a rented Toyota Four Runner, and decided to drive to the top of Pikes Peak. The Service the next day would be right in front of this mountain, where the Memorial is located.
When I reached the top after a couple of hours drive, standing there in the parking lot of the lodge I recognized the President of Local 1009. "Hey Worcester" I called out.
"Hey, how's it going?" the President of 1009 replied. "You want a beer?"
And so we shared a brew at 14,000 feet and spoke quietly amoungst ourselves.
The irony was not lost on me that there were six Brothers from 1009 standing there.
And now two more names will be chiseled into the face of that black wall out in Colorado Springs. In the shadow of Pikes Peak, surrounded by beauty, yet carved from tragedy.
Once again, Worcester Brothers will make the solemn journey, and this time our Brothers from Mount Vernon will accompany them.
So Rest now...jobs well done, the Lord has called you home.

The new Engine 58 2010 Pierce Puc has now been in service just over one year. We [truck comm] took a big gamble with this type of pump and body but the rig has performed great with only one half day out of service with a leaking front wheel bearing. It has been very busy with 5 jobs just this last few weeks and the guys like working off of it
