"Svensson compared Rapid Intervention Teams to seatbelts. He said just as a driver may say 'I have a seatbelt, it's ok to go faster,' a firefighter may engage in dangerous behavior on the fireground because they have the Rapid Intervention Teams to help get them to safety."Quote from article. Yes...but he actually blamed RIT's for making the firefighters do more dangerous things on the fireground by giving them a false sense of security with their presence...I never felt that way, but thats what he said. I wonder how many firefighters do feel that way?

Sorry, I should have told you guys this too, for Feraldan and Monty...we have something going on every wednesday. The first one being the meeting and the rest being drills. We have a full weight room with bike, treadmill, nautilus(?) and free weights. I was just speaking hypotheticaly with the one night a month because I know there will always be the complainers who just b**** about everything...I would not make it mandatory but I would try to do something like what Monty said and thats if you dont pass an annual physical (on top of the OSHA/PESH one) you dont get class "A" privelages. I dont know how feasible this would be but I think the cause would be worth the try. Especially if we raised awareness of health issues and dropped the heart attack rate in the fire service. Anythings worth the try if its to save our bretheren from becoming a LODD statistic. Stay Safe Moose

Excellent article, and he makes some very excellent points. I agree with the last few posts...we should be taking a deep look at these comments and realizing he is saying them AS a brother...to many brothers and sisters....saying we should take a better look at what we do on scene, and with our health. We have become waay to lax when it comes to our physical condition. Paid firefighters must pass physical tests...armed services undergo physical training everyday...arent we a para-military organization? I believe one drill night a month should be Physical Training: weightlifting, cardio on the bike or treadmill, walking/jogging, etc. We as firefighters should be more concerned with our health, eat healthier and work out more around the firehouse...its a scary thing with all of the heart attacks in the fire service, and my father had one at 48!! He had to be shocked twice and revived! Good point about the safety net thing as well....when he brings up the fact that firefighters probably do feel safer and more invincible with the RIT on scene and therefore attempt more dangerous tactics. We should remember our training; our safety is paramount to anything else. What good is it to loose 6 firefighters in an attempt to save one person? We need to study our fire science more in-depth, learn building construction better and the results each has on fire spread, we need to realise its not just "put the wet stuff on the red stuff" any more. I hope to hear more from this firefighter and I hope he writes many reports and articles on his study here in america. If anyone hears of them before us please post them here as will I. We should all learn from this. Great Stuff!! Stay safe Moose

There was, I believe the helmet was called Fire Knight...similar to these helmets, including the faceshield that retracts into the helmet, like a pilots helmet sort of. I agree with another post also, about the protection the traditionals offer in regards to the dripping hot water/ash that will fall down your coat. Otherwise I think its a nice helmet.

I agree!!! My head still hurts!! But seriously, after pondering through a dictionary for 3/4 of an hour and feeling quite perplexed at some of the terminology used....I couldnt agree with you more ckroll!!! I sincerely look forward to reading more from you and learning a lot. Very professionally put and a pleasure to read! I respect the bejeesus out of you. Moose

Cool.......you learn something new every day. Go get em onthewheel!!! Is this enforceable with tickets and such? Or is this just a warning type deal?

THATS what I was looking for....a pro-active way of solving this thread instead of arguing over opinions and no facts. Good idea DOC, make a state law requiring all Speed Limits to drop to 10mph for ALL emergency scenes. Than further break it down to say that an emergency scene is anyplace with an emergency vehicle displaying warning devices with appropriate fire police/Law enforcement staffing to guide traffic through scene. This would protect us at fire scenes too, where we have our handlines and supply lines everywhere and firefighters all over the place trying to do their jobs....GOOD idea!!!!

Yah, up here we have village cops on in our town and schoharie, but for the rest of the COUNTY there is a handfull of Troopers and maybe sherrifs. I see no big deal either, they had more coverage than most of our towns.

Oh boy...I should have waited a minute longer!! When I started my earlier post no one else had posted, when I hit send I saw a bunch of others with info I didnt know about. Whoooops!! I had no idea all of this was going on...I agree with osweegowind about just building a county ems station, probably be easier to manage. Could they contract with an already existing Paid EMS agency? Are there any in the area that could? Dont know much of the area so Im just asking you guys out of curiosity.

Talk about being placed between a rock and a hard place...they want the bus there as long as they provide staff for it and they have been burned before so obviously the chiefs gonna hold out for a written policy for it. It wasnt fair for them to give him 10 minutes and not be able to bring the matter to a dept meeting for discussion. Sounds like a bad situation. Wish them luck on resolving it peacefully.

Look up on the Fire Academy Web site...they offer lists of both academy courses and outreach programs and when and where they will be. I believe the officer classes are offered in weekend classes at the academy for those of us who work too much. You can also take NIMS training online...I forgot the site but will try to get it to you, sorry, Im at Job 1 and the site is on computer at Job2!! Get back to you soon. Moose

Interesting topic....I have seen both sides of the spectrum here too. But I have also seen people who were bused in given a quick once over and sent to the waiting room where they still waited for an hour or more. Some times, our pt is put on a guerney in the HALL and are forced to wait there for an hour or more, right next to the nurses station! Our local hospital ( first aid station ) is an equal opportunity triager...you get screwed either way unless your a critical pt!! But sometimes, as in partyrocks situation, someone slips through the triage system and gets mis-triaged. I brought in a 86 year old FM from a side impact MVA. The impact was on the drivers side and, da DA, she was the driver! She complained of abdominal pain, abdm was tender, she was confused and starting to black out, weak thready pulse, almost no BP, medic started two lines, we tx to the ED, gave the report, and they put her in THE HALLWAY!!! We were there for 45 minutes cleaning rig, restocking after a big MVA, and she was finaly seen by doc after my captain finaly said something to the doc. She was in the exam room for 5 minutes and was suddenly rushed to trauma in full code. She had a AAA. Mis-Triaged...and she was brought in by ambulance, lights and sirens with medic on board. (No chopper available, medic wanted tx to nearest facility) So either way, something needs to be done with our ED triaging system, I agree.

Hi I have been missing quite a bit of this stuff going on on the weekends...I dont get to a computer untill Im at work. I see all of this discussion about bashing, and paid vs. volly, and "bad language" but I dont see the actuall threads in question because they are closed or deleted...What I see, as an active member, is discussion between co-firefighters, EMS, and police officers. Yes, sometimes it gets heated, and sometimes opinions clash and discussion sometimes leads to rude or disruptive behavior...but the discussions still teach something, dont they? How many times have we sat around the station and got involved in a heated discussion with friends...how many times have we agreed to disagree and still voiced each others opinions without bad feelings? Seth, I dont know you personally, wish I did, I wish I knew a lot of you personally, but what I see going on here is a few members who just plain get out of control every once in a while. Should the rest of the membership get punished for their behavior by taking away certain privilages or deleting posts, or continually posting the same warnings to obviously deaf ears? I LOVE this site, it is active, informative, educational, entertaining, and its WELL RUN. I think the moderators do a great job and the administration runs a great web site, but.....this is a forum. A place for people to speak their minds and discuss topics of interest or concern, and yes some people ( like me) respect the responses and learn from them. If other people cant take constructive criticism than this isnt the place for them...I feel you should just give the individuals complaining the most one warning....than if they persist, delete THEM from the site, not the content that some of us learn from. From where I see, you should be complaining to certain members...not the other way around. If there are people out there who want things done differently, or want "change change change" than let them start their own site. I visit 3-4 different sites and this by far is the best, as far as content and activity. Other sites are not as active, you make a post and it could be MONTHS before theres a reply!!! I think everyone needs to act more mature here...get off Seths back...grow up and take your criticism as well as you give it...open your mind to new ideas and LEARN from others. No one person here is the "Master" of all and anyone who claims to be an expert is a joke. We should all learn from each other, share our MISTAKES as well as our accomplishments so we can ALL learn from it...THATS the true measure of what we as EMS/FIRE/LAW ENFORCEMENT providers should be exemplifying....instead of the kindergarten BS that Seth has to continually deal with. We all belong to different organizations, from different parts of the world, and yet we all come together here and talk, and learn, and share our ideas and experiences...lets not ruin that, lets keep it going and keep the BS to a minimum. Seth, if Im wrong please let me know. I apologise, just love this site. Stay safe and watch each others backs. Moose

lol...I'll have to remember that line ALS!! I dont understand what these people are thinking...dont they realise that if there is a call on their block, were going to mess up their pretty flowers anyway??? And if its at their neighbors house, are they going to submit the bill for the flowers to their neighbors? What are people thinking of these days....other than themselves!!! Stay safe Moose
