It doesn't bring their father back but it must provide some comfort to know that their educations and more are all taken care of.
The Peter Figoski Scholarship Fund is now over 1.3 MILLION dollars and donations are still coming in.
Add to this the fact that over 20,000 people, mostly police, attended his funeral. It's nice to know that people still care even if it is after the fact.

Just another example of what's wrong with the system. You're right. A lot of training can be accomplished on these calls but most people just want to get their name on the check-list of who showed up for other reasons than training or firefighting and then disappear back into the woodwork.
Wrong answer. If you have the time for the alarm, you have time for 20-30 minutes of useful training. That's all that this would take and we used to run drills like this all the time. It can be a very valuable experience for those who show up and can actually increase participation because its no longer just a wasted trip it's training too. To position apparatus, receive assignments, deploy with appropriate equipment, TIC the building, and even throw up the stick/bucket doesn't require a lot of time or preparation. Just do what you'd do if the place was on fire. If you don't have time for that you shouldn't have responded in the first place.
The problem with doing this exclusively on drill nights is there are far more people (usually) and the same people will push to do all the work while the wall-flowers sit by and don't get the experience. On the AFA call you probably have 1/2 or 1/3 the number of people and some of the wall-flowers will have to be your go-getters. That's also a realistic issue for the officers giving out assignments. Giving out assignments is easy on drill night because you've got so many people but at the actual alarm when you've got 6 instead of 16 it can be a real challenge.
You don't have to put people on the roof, just throw the ladder or bucket up and have guys go up and see what kind of roof it actually is? Is it covered with wires that will be hazards to you during a real fire? Is it covered with heavy equipment like AC units and the like? Or is it a truss roof that may be susceptible to collapse? Do all your people know that already? I doubt it. TIC the roof and identify what equipment is operating.
If the occupant/owner doesn't like you doing a pre-plan they need an education and that can be the Chief's job while you're there.
What do they say about an ounce of prevention?
3 million dollars of apparatus on the road or in the firehouse. What's the difference?
The fuel cost is budgeted already so the only thing you're expending is a little time.
One of the biggest complaints I used to hear is not enough training, not enough training or stupid training that doesn't do us any good. If apparatus placement, equipment orientation and deployment, and small unit tactics isn't valuable I don't know what is.
To all those who say they don't have time, I say: "train the way you fight, fight the way you train". If you're conditioning everyone to believe that responses are a waste of time they're not going to be prepared when they roll up and have fire rolling out the windows.
There are very few excuses NOT to train when the opportunity presents itself. You're responding anyway, might as well make it worth the trip.
All these people with all these excuses not to train. It's sad and its scary. With that attitude I doubt you're getting enough training to begin with.

While I think the "get the job done first, safety second" statement is absolutely ludicrous, I think what's even more ludicrous is how individuals on here have to nitpick this officers actions as if he did something so egregiously dangerous, instead of applauding him for his actions on a job well done.

1848hrs-Vails Gate dispatched to the above location for a wash-down from an MVA.
1850hrs-Vails Gate re-sounded; PD on scene now advising of entrapment.
Units arrived to find a late model sedan that had left the roadway and went into a ditch. The rear-end of the car was off the ground, with the front-end against the rock culvert.
Members of R480 focused on stabilizing the vehicle using rescue struts, while other members secured the battery and staged the extrication equipment.
A Medevac was requested by the Chief of New Windsor EMS. However, it was cancelled due to an extended ETA.
Once the vehicle was stabilized, members used the hydraulic tools to remove the front and rear driver side doors, as well as the "B" post. The driver was then removed to a backboard, placed on a stretcher and prepped for transport.
All units went back in service shortly thereafter.

On 12/4, the members of Hughsonville FD in the Town of Wappingers helped make a little boys 11th birthday unforgettable. Christopher, the son of a close friend to my wife and I, has been diagnosed with "Leg-Calf Perthies", a bone disorder that has caused the complete deterioration of his right femur. Christopher has been confined to a wheel chair and has recently found out that he will be undergoing the first of several surgeries at Boston Childrens Hospital the week of Christmas. To celebrate his Birthday his family chose to rent the hall at HFD, seeing as Christopher has always loved the fire service. When the members of HFD found out what a fan of the fire department Christopher is they decided to give him a few gifts of their own. Sporting an HFD helmet and a huge grinn, Christopher was pushed through the engine room by the Captian of HFD and given his own personal VIP tour of the station. He almost jumped out of his wheel chair when the Lieutenant pulled "THE BEAST" (45-55 and Christophers favorite truck) into the back lot and sat him in the drivers seat. His eyes lit up as he was lifted into the bucket of the Tower Ladder and his smile could be seen for miles as the HFD members all accepted his challange to a "wheel chair race". Christophers perfect day came to a close with the members of HFD singing "Happy Birthday", having some cake, watching him unwrap his gifts and presenting him with his own HFD patch and T-Shirt (With a picture of "THE BEAST" on it of course).
From Christophers family: "To Chief Glenn Kramer, Assistant Chief Tim Laffin, Captian Ed D'Anna, Lieutenant Trevor Dhalla, Fire FIghter Ryan White and Fire Fighter Chris Baker:
Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts, you have no idea how much this ment to Christopher and how much you have just helped him. It was so wonderful to see him smile like that today. He was still talking about all of you when we got home. Thank You and God Bless!"
Here are a few shots from the party. I wanted to post this to remind all of us why we do what we do. As the members of HFD showed today, It's not all about getting on the big red truck and running into the devils play ground. It's about the smile on a little boys face when you hand him a helmet and say "blow the horn". Thank you again HFD for making Christophers birthday so special for him. Stay Safe!
If anyone would like to be kept up to date on Christophers journey PM me.

    I have two:
I used to live on a tiny street that led out to a main state road. We had a call (volly) for a baby seizing in the house on the corner of the tiny street and the main rd. The address of the house was on the tiny street. As I came down that small road looking for the address, the elderly homeowner (pt's grandma) was on the tiny street, in the dark, waving me over. It was a febrile seizure. No big deal, but the family was well panicked. They needed more care then the baby did. After the EMS crew left, and I was leaving to go back home I saw the elderly lady who had waved me and asked her why she was not in the main road waiting for a first responder. I never met her before in my life. She said, "I have seen you come by with your blue light, so I knew you would be here."
#2. I was going to the hardware store in Sept of 2010, in my own car. Call came in for a bee sting reaction less than a minute away. I was about 10 minutes from the EMS station. I went to the call, with a BVM and a radio. I was led through the house to the back deck, where a lady was dying. Blue as blue, no detectable pulse, foam coming out of the mouth. Some movement in hands. + bee sting in last 3 minutes. I advised on the radio of the arrest, got her supine and began to bag her. Other members arrived and we began CPR. I updated the crew to bring the Epi-pen, AED and suction, which they did.
My day job is a medic. I don't know which end of the pen the epi even comes out of! (ball breaking comments gratefully accepted; and deserved) This kid from WEMS (who we use to staff our ambulances)came charging around the back yard, epi pen in outstretched hand and slammed that thing into this lady like Ahab harpooning Moby-Dick. The CPR was flawless and the scene time short. NO MEDIC available. Closest ED was Putnam. On loading the pt, she had a weak carotid pulse, a nearly useless respiratory effort and was still blue. On the was to the ED, the WEMS kid called med control and got orders for the SECOND epi-pen! (again, I am a medic. Who knew you you could do that?)
Someone introduced me to the patient this year at the towns 2011 September 11 ceremony. I was speechless. I said "I haven't seen you since..." She finished the sentence, "Since I died. My new birthday is coming up this month." The luck of me being close, but mostly the aggressive no-delay treatment by the WEMS crew and the good CPR by the other extra folks who arrived on scene without a doubt yanked that lady straight out of the grave. NO MEDIC involved. Putnam could not do an intercept. One of the top 5 hottest job in my 30 years, but credit goes to the other guys. I hope they see this.

I'll add mine.. I will have to give alittle backround thou..
2011 has sucked for me.. Losing both my parents in a 6 month span, losing a dog, the day I buried my father, to losing a very great girl from the stress of it all, to even now figuring out how a 25 year old can save his parents house from foreclosure. Alot huh...lol
With all this that has been going on, I've thought about quiting EMS, maybe even serving the public all together. Then I realized that, I have been helping people people since I was 16. Countless hours of giving, spending time away from those I loved especially the one's who just recently passed. Did I really want to give up all that time now they the two people who felt most safe around me when they got sick were gone.. I thought long and hard about it. Then two calls came by me that made me think wow.. This was my parents telling me to keep going..
Everyone who know me outside this forum know I have guity over my fathers stroke.. I still to this day say to myself, what if I didnt work that overnight before, and wasnt so tried.. maybe I could of seen signs before it was to late, and it was irreversible, but anyways it was a call I was on where the person had the big one in terms of strokes.. Me, and my ALS partner just worked so insync. That we got him back, and I could help but think to myself. I could save my own father, but I made a difference in someone else's life so that they can have theirs.. Thinking like that made me happy, that even thou I didnt get to save my own fayhers life. I got a chance to save someones elses to make them smile..
The second call, reminded me of my mother.. The call came in as CPR in progress. We get there to find a vent, in PEA.. ( strangely enough the same rhythm my mother was in the first time she went into arrest) We worked on the person, got them back to a NSR. Even I was shocked.. Then I said to myself.. This is my mother telling me, your good at what you do. Dont give up on your dream job, just because you missed me.. So even thou I have had a real shity year. There is some good that comes out of it.. Making a difference in someones life is sometimes better then a paycheck, when your faith needs alittle restoring.
I will close by repeating a saying Bill Rosthchild ( sympatheticmedic) told me while when my fathers death was recently new. He said " EMS is a thankless job, Its even hard when the world expect you to bring clam, and understand to a scene when you, yourself's world had no meaning, and is spiraling out of control, but if you are a true professional, You can adapt and overcome"
Thank you bill, truer words have never been spoken my friend..

i was dispatching this fire. if my memory serves me correctly, it was a 3 story multi-floor group home. i believe a total of 13 people lived there. as for 36 car 13, he act's as command's liaison to orange county fire control in most situations. as far as i remember, the fire was placed under control by 36-13 per commands recommendation. also, newburgh's own dispatcher by have been told later that it was under control again due to the fact that on a third alarm assignment, all firefighters are required to return to work, and may have been to stop having more man power return to the scene and rather stand by in quarters. also, all equipment in orange county has low band radio's capable of contacting orange 911 on 46.16 regardless of primary use of vhf, uhf, or 800. at multiple points during this fire, newburgh car 4 contacted us directly to provide instructions for middle hope's in coming engine. middle hope is the only primary agency on 800 but they do have low bands. other 800 use are the coordinators, haz mat, fort montgomery and highland falls but seldom do they use it.

Luckily Mahopac probably doesn't have a different procedure for Line of Duty vs Active Duty. They haven't had enough members pass where that distinction has to be made. How about who gives a rats a** how they did it so long as his friends and even more importantly his family were given some infinitesimal level of comfort. If the family wanted clowns and jugglers and the dept could provide it, then what more could anyone ask? This kind of s*** stirring goes right along with the people who question weather all LODD deaths are equal. It serves no benefit and only distracts from a department's attempt to honor the service of a member.

Joey was a "plank holder" in Squad Co. 61 (Bronx), when we were "transformed" by DC Ray Downey (RIP 9-11-01) from an engine co. to a squad co. in SOC. As a newly formed co. we were constantly drilling and preparing to "go-online" as a squad, and many members of the hand-picked company were the original engine members. Joey loved going to the "Rock" every day tour for the months of training- he was always "up" for any type of hands-on activity. Especially when it came to "ropes". He was one of my "rope fairies"- guys who loved to take out the high-angle and confined space gear and rig up scenarios to drill on. I remember one "24" tour where we had spent the whole day training at the "Rock";came back to quarters for the night tour and had chow;drilled again for an hour on "firefighter removal" from the cellar, and then the brothers sat in the kitchem while I did paperwork in the co. office. Around midnight I heard footsteps (not Santa's reindeer) on the roof, so I climbed the scuttle ladder to check it out. There on the roof was Joey and the rest of the crew, setting up to do a "pickoff" from the top floor bunkroom. I was beat, and looking forward to lying down on the couch- but what could I say? I became the "victim" in the window for them to "rescue". You had to admire Joe's burning desire to excel at all phases of firefighting and rescue.
When I got promoted up a rank, he made me a "cutdown" halligan as an officers tool, w/ my nickname welded on it- that was the type of guy Joe was! His Dad (Joe,Sr) is a retired and well-loved Deputy Chief from the South Bronx (Div 6) and my heart gors out to him and the family, and the brothers who knew Joey on FDNY and LI where Joey was also a volly in his hometown. Sorry for this rambling message, but I'm surely going to miss Joey and his quiet but infectious smile and personality. Joey, R.I.P.,brother!

Reporting the operators of vehicles involved in serious accidents is not uncommon.
Noting the associations and/or relationships of those involved is also a common media tactic so we shouldn't be surprised that it was reported. Right, wrong, or indifferent that's how the media operates. Some would call it irony.
Finally, the accident was two days ago and is under investigation. Charges and/or fault has yet to be determined; summonses are rarely issued at the scene of such an accident and it is currently unknown if such action is appropriate.
After staff discussion, in light of the unusual nature of this incident and involved parties, this thread is being closed. It may be reopened at a future time if conditions warrant. Thank you for your understanding.
