I wouldn't be calling PCFD ENG58 out over anything that is taken out of context on this site.  The guy devoted his whole life to the PCFD both with and without a paycheck.

Yes, A second alarm will bring an off duty members back manning an Engine, a Truck and another Chief plus an additional off duty member to for rehab. If the manpower is not needed at the scene they hire back companies will cover the City.

nfd2004, from someone who has seen Newburgh firefighters operate on countless occasions, I can say they never cease to amaze me. They are truly dedicated to their profession and bust their asses and then some to get the job done. What they do with the numbers they have is truly incredible.

The City of Newburgh Firefighters are to be commended for their dedication to their jobs as firefighters. Those firefighters must deal with the cards that are dealt them. Of course every firefighter of that city would want more manning. I am sure they all fully understand how manning can have a very serious effect on both the civilians lives they are to protect as well as their own safety. Excluding any property damage. It is the first few minutes in any fire that have the most effect on it's outcome.
I Salute the City of Newburgh Firefighters for the job they do.
Thank you for your dedicated service to the citizens of Newburgh.
Just today is an article that was posted in the NY Daily News on how important the addition of the FIFTH Firefighter to several Engine Cos is. It points out that now this will enable them to get that water on the fire TWICE as fast as before. I realize that Newburgh is not about to put a fifth firefighter on their engine companies. But it does point out how manning plays such an important part when fighting a fire. Here is that article.

    1. Where the fire was, appeared to be closer to Vista and Connecticut.
    2. Tankers were needed, which Bedford lacks.
    3. The IC called a Truck from Bedford Hills, Bedford doesn;t have one.
    4. Anyone with a scanner knows Bedford struggles to cover what seems like the majority of their calls. Why take the gamble?
    5. Wouldn't this be more appropriate for the Chief or Bedford to contact the Chief of Pound Ridge?

That happens in Orange County daily, for small calls. Cascading mutual aid. Department one can't get enough people out to handle the emergency (Fire, AFA, MVA, cat in the tree, etc.) so they call for an engine on automatic response from Dept. 2, a ladder from Dept.3, and a FAST team from Dept.4. All of those departments, if they can get out the door, each call the next department for standby, and it goes on and on. Volunteer departments don't want to acknowledge that they have a man power problem, commissioners don't want to recognize there is a problem, and the county doesn't want to enforce the mutual aid agreement preventing cascading mutual aid, because then they would be admitting there is a problem. I'm sure most counties are like this.

Hey guys here for an update-my father was responding to a full assignment on Monday when he suddenly collapsed. My brothers from WPFD used an AED to bring him back almost immediately. He went in for surgery yesterday and all went well. The doctors expect him to make a full recovery. Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers.
  14. billy98988 liked a post in a topic by RES24CUE in How to make room for your Engine at a fire.
I am generally unopposed to Monday Morning Quarterbacking. However, on this one I am hesitant. I do not know the whole story here, the assignment for that piece of apparatus, what the engine driver was trying to accomplish, or most importantly, where that rig went after the video ended. I hate the bullish mentality that many firefighters develop these days..."we are the fire department and we can do whatever we want." It is my belief that there a lot of overzealous idiots in this business who think its "cool" to force a door for an automatic alarm, break every window in the house for an incipient burn in a rubbish can, or push someone's car out of the way because they want their engine 10 feet closer to the fire. That said, I have 2 opinions on the mater:
The first opinion is that the engine doesn't belong in front of that fire to begin with! The only thing that would be achieved in this instance would be that the engine would block needed access for a ladder truck that should occupy the flanking position on the corner of that building. After all, we can always add more lengths of hose, but we can't add another fly to the ladder. That engine should be parked out of the way somewhere down the street and the amount of hose needed should be pulled to the fire building.
The second opinion that I have here is that I do not know the specific assignment of that engine and therefore cannot say that pushing those cop cars out of the way wasn't justified. If there were guys screaming for water and that engine was assigned to hit the plug, then maybe it was urgent that they squeeze by to get water to the attack engine. If there were people hanging out of windows and the ladder truck was behind them, maybe they needed to get out of its way. I don't know??? But I don't think that waiting 30 seconds for the cop to move his car would have made much of a difference in the grand scheme of things.
My strongest opinion on the matter is that there are plenty of young and impressionable firefighters who read this blog who should take the actions demonstrated in this video with a grain of salt. There are many potential negative outcomes of performing a risky maneuver like the one in this video:
    1. The two cars being pushed could have turned sideways and completely blocked the engine's access to the fire.
    2. The car being pushed could have struck the engine's tire, flattening it, and leaving the engine unable to reach its destination.
    3. The cars could have jumped the curb and taken out an unseen hydrant compromising the water source needed for the fire.
    4. The actions of the driver could cause "bad blood" between the fire department and police department resulting in endless headaches during future operations.
As the previous post stated, "sometimes we have to do a little damage to get the job done." BUT DON'T GO LOOKING FOR IT! This should be viewed as an unfortunate event that should be avoided at all costs and not a great opportunity. There are far too many people (morons) in this industry who will think that this video "awesome." So I don't think that we should be cheerleaders here to feed those with an overly aggressive mentality.

LOL at Res24cue. You keep proving me wrong that people can't be any dumber.
Law Enforcement Officers are the only thing that keeps order and prevents chaos in our country, regardless of what politicians, media and other groups try to feed us. The most important thing for all of us to do is to avoid sipping the Kool Aid that is fed to us making us think that LEOs are the enemy.
The enemy is ourselves and our thought process that we can be and are above the law. If we eliminate the laws that govern us and protect us, I will gladly pick up my family and move somewhere that has them, enforces them and protects my family.
I hate how our country is going down the toilet, and how so many people try to justify their illegal actions.

Well, I relistened and all I hear is the recorder say "I can record" and the Trooper appears to say "You can" or possibly "Yes, you can." The Trooper doesn't appear to say anything directing him not to record, nor does he even engage him in any conversation, so.... There is no indication the Trooper said or took any action precluding recording. The Trooper is even walking away from the guy recording as he passes him.
I'm not sure why some people go out of their way to assume the cops are wrong, when there is no evidence to substantiate that, and even in this case evidence to the contrary.
    Unreal.

    What EMTBravo Fan Club?
Do you think if the cops asked this guy politely this whole incident would have been avoided?
This incident started with a felon hitting people with a 2x4. That info comes from witnesses, not the cops. Something tells me the perp was not interested in being civil about his encounters that afternoon.
Sorry to inform you, but his actions set the tone.
Your statement "I guess we need extremes like the protests that occurred in Furguson, MO to combat the other extreme, the one being vocalized on this very thread", is probably one of the more asinine statements I have read on this forum. But, your comment describing the Trooper as a degenerate with a High School diploma and a badge on his chest speaks volumes about where you are coming from.
...and FYI, Troopers do not wear badges on their chest.

I approved your comments because I didn't think they needed censoring......ignorance isn't against the rules. But....boy are you wrong.
I can only hope that someday you need LE assistance and they have to take an overly cautious approach, thanks to needless criticism from people, like yourself, who are in no position to question the actions of those who's shoes they've never had to fill.
In this video, I saw a constructive, calculated and restrained response that led to the apprehension of some moron who didn't listen to lawful order. He's lucky he didn't get roughed up worse and that level heads prevailed.

Interesting Article, Guess its been long enough since the last time we went down the stupid trail. They say the fire service is a 100 years of history unspoiled by progress.... Here we are failing to learn from history.
Back in the early 1990's we started with the every rig should have water....The Quint Concept. or even the Total Quint Concept. We even had the mini/maxi concept. We put everything we need on one truck and it 1) does nothing well and 2) add $100,000's to the cost of the rig.
St. Louis is now backing away since it doesn't really work as advertised. A couple of large VA depts. are now at the 1st replacement round and are asking why have the fleet costs skyrocked, and maybe we should not do this. Rochester went back to traditional units, because it too found it didn't really save money or work well.
Now if we cant get rigs on the road, adding another piece of equipment that somebody has to carry into a building is not going to help.
This week I heard 1 dept in the county paging out for any available interior firefighters to respond to an automatic alarm. Well if you can not handle a response to an A/A then equipment is not your problem. Every department in the county has taken millions in taxpayer money with the understanding of those taxpayers that when they call the FD, they will actually show up. If you can not do that, it is time to merge with someone else, hire someone else or hire your own staff.
Neat tool? do you put it on over or under your SCBA?
So this backpack weights about 45 lbs. So you use them on your initial knockdown but you have to leave your SCBA on the truck. Sounds like another toy that some depts. will buy with tax payer funds and it will sit on the rig till it no longer functions and its then thrown away.

Sure. Strap this 70 lb. thing to yourself, plus your airpack and the rest of your stuff. That'll help with the manpower shortage everyone has.
  23. billy98988 liked a post in a topic by wraftery in Residential Natural Gas Related Incidents
In older areas, natural gas distribution was low pressure. Gas suppliers have been changing the mains to high pressure which involves sliding plastic pipe through older galvanized pipe for building service. A gas leak in the street has the possibility of seeping through the space between the old pipe and the new pipe and entering the building.
This is not to say it's the cause of gas explosions or the possible increase in odor-of-gas runs. I just wrote this so you are aware of this possibility.
