  1. The organization that will lead the response is USAID. The US Office for Disater Assistance is the "coordinating" part. The contact for Haiti is former President Bill Clinton. This Office works closely with the US State Department, with Secretary of State Hilary Clinton as the lead I would assume that the communication between these two governmental organizations. Caviats are these, one is that Haiti has a great relationship with the US but not with the UN. The lead organization on the ground in Haiti is US Ambassodor to Haiti Kenneth Merten. The UN has 7,000 peace keepers on the ground there and maybe utilized for security if things deteriorate. If there are not enough monkey wrenches in using the NIMS modeling and ICS to try to organize this is the fact that all of the Haiti government facilities and potential leaders are lost. This would be a great case study for emergency management. As a side note we have been in Haiti since 1915 when Former President Wilson sent in the Marines. Almost a century later and the Marines are once again on the way with the US Navy, US Coast Guard and alot of other federal assets. Is there another Country greater than ours that can provide this? God Bless the men and women that are on their way to save lives.

  6. Ignorant in my view, yes. Governments role is public safety. If "uninformed" masses is a better word and it is easier to swallow than use that one. History shows that economic recovery happens as a matter of fact with tax cuts. Let me spend my money where I want and need. Let me choose the Doctor that I want and what it is that I want to eat. I do not need the government to wrap their arms around me and have them whisper in my ear that they will make the decisions for me and make the choices for me. God granted us the rights of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness and that the Constitution of these United States protects the people who live here from the government from infringing on those. It may sound corney to some, but the door has been opened by those that we have elected to support and defend that document to allow for nationalized heath care, nationalized banks, nationalized industry. As a matter of fact nationalized is not the word that I would chose, it is, socialism. This is not a personal attack on anyone, just that sometimes when you pull the pin on a hand grenade it is hard to tell when it will go off. Populism and the media picked what we have today and the polls are showing that what they are creating is loosing popularity because they were not aware (did not what to take the time to find out) what these people are really about. Remember the chants of Cops and Firefighters after 9/11? The governments role of public safety? And today the threats of cut backs and lay offs from those same professions. Charity is not the governments role. Who knows, I may be wrong and the magic wand will be waved and it will all be better. If history proves, and it usually does, I am afraid that the magic wand will not work.
  7. 10-4. I just wish that there were more people who thought like that in November. As for now, it is the era of big government that we are all going to have to pay for many years to come. On the upside, think of all the people we will meet in line for the doctor that Uncle Sam says when and where we can go. Maybe it will be in New Jersey when I am getting Gas , soda and something that tastes like food with sodium, trans fat and sugar.
  8. It is a shame that for people (some not all) who are involved in this type buisness (police, fire and ems) that are so easily fooled by smoke and mirrors. It is what some who wanted hope and change and the stopping of politics of fear to vote for who we have in charge now. Well, wether intentional or not, they and we have to live with consequences of what we were being told through out the campaign season that the people who they asociated with and the people who inspired them and the people who molded their ideologies should not be suprised that socialism is now out our door step. We can now only pray that the ignorant masses wake up and realize that this is the greatest Country that God has created and that Government run programs that make choices for you are not what the founding fathers framed for you and your decendents. "Government is not the answer, in most cases government is the problem" Ronald Reagan.

  12. First, a couple of things immediately come to mind. How much cool aid were you drinking at this movie? And secondly, do you allow yourself to follow mindlessly a proven liar. If you were to see a movie that was produced by someone one is proven to support Countries such as Cuba who have the people under their thumb. I am not following the premise that the United States of America, the greatest Country in the entire free world has a substandard health care system. Where is the waiting list for entry into these Countries that you listed? Are you to suggest that they have better care in these Countries? England, who has socialized heath care, and takes 60 % of your wages to pay for it is on the brink of bankruptcy. If you need surgery you need to take a number and be placed on a list. If you want the best and the brightest to perform any surgery on any part of your anatomy you seek it here in the United States. How can you or anyone who has lived here take what you have for granted? There is no one who if you do not have the ability to pay that will be turned away. Realize the coverage that is provided here in New York to the people who are here (citizens or not). The Doctor may not be authorized to remove warts from your buttocks, but the hospitals are funded, again in New York, much less the rest of the Country to provide indigents with health care. It is beyond my comprehension, especially to those who have received the best health care, to criticize the very people whom have taken care of you. Socialism does not work. How ignorant can one be that does not at the very least investigate both sides than to subject themselves to propaganda? This really disturbs me. If Cuba, France, Canada or any other feel good Country is so great than move. Subject yourself to garnished wages that give you no medical services that are free market driven and wait in line. This Country offers the best and the brightest and nothing less. Criticize the system that provides cutting edge technology and medicines that are available to you and that other Countries try to mimic and have another glass of the red stuff and sleep well.

  16. The Flashover Simulator (Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, NYC) is an invaluable learning experience. It is important to remember what your role as a student is. The way in which the fire is fought and controlled in the simulator is the way they fight fire in Europe and not the way we do it here in the US. The nozzle is designed to deliver litters per minute as opposed to gallons per minute. There is a big difference in the amount of water or more importantly the amount of water to steam conversion that is produced. The important lessons learned in the simulator are to use all of your senses. Remember that Flashover is total room involvement. What actually occurs is an exaggerated rollover. Observe the fire development from incipient to rollover. Observe the thermal balance and what happens when air is introduced as the ventilation process takes place. It is easy to get caught up waiting for the flame development above your helmet, but the most important part is how the fire conditions develop to that point. Watch the smoke begin to layer, watch the color and buoyancy begin to change and when rollover (the red snakes of flame) begin to appear in the smoke and these are the lessons that are to be learned so you will know when to get out of that environment. You will learn the big picture of risk versus benefit and when the fire conditions provide for untenable atmospheres for victims. I encourage you to take a class and see what occurs in a controlled fire with limited combustibles. I hope that this helps. Be safe.
  17. The Flashover Course is designed to have the Firefighter gain skills in the process of fire development. The ffs can see fire development from the begining stages through what is really an exagerated roll over. You can see thermal balance in action and how the smoke layers inside a compartment. Remeber that the lessons learned in this training are for you to learn and watch fire development. The way that the fire is controlled is the way that it is done in Europe not here in the USA. The nozzle is designed for smaller amounts of water. If you use the techniques that are shown in the course to control the fire in an actual fire here, you will steam and burn your crew. I encourage you to take the course. Remember why you are there. Learn about fire development, learn about smoke, learn about the warning signs of flashover, learn about what happens when you vent the fire. This is a great class. Be safe. The two locations that I know of are at the Putnam County Fire Training Center and at the Rockland Coutny Fire Training Center.

  22. It’s definitely a calling. Why do some people come to be School Teachers, Priests, and Police Officers? They don’t do it for money, they don’t do it for fame, they do it because it will make a difference, they do it because deep down in the part of your soul it makes you, you. The same for a Fire Fighter, it describes the person, whether it be as a Volunteer or as a Career FF. If you train well at the beginning of your journey to become a Fire Fighter then someday along the way you will make a difference. It could be saving a life or, protecting property or as simple as brining the home owner a photograph that could never be replaced out of that burning building. Imagine the feeling that you would have when you give that child whose house is in ruins the stuffed animal they sleep with every night. To the making of a Fire Fighter goes many years…..to the desire to be a Fire Fighter, it is born with you. A simple Public Servant
  23. When you weep for me Brother when you weep for me Remember it was meant to be Lay me down and when you leave Remember I'll be at your sleeve In every dark and choking hall I'll be there as you slowly crawl On every roof in driving snow I'll hold your coat and you will know In cellars hot with searing heat At windows where a gate you'll meet In closets where young children hide You know I'll be there at your side The house from which I now respond Is overstaffed with heroes gone Men who answered one last bell Did the job and did it well As firefighters we understand That death's a card dealt in our hand A card we hope we never play But one we hold there anyway That card is something that we ignore As we crawl across a weakened floor For we know that we are the only prayer For any one who might be there So remember as you wipe your tears The joy I knew throughout the years As I did the job I loved to do I pray this thought will see you through. -Unknown
