  1. Respectfully disagree. Don't see it especially in these times. Not to mention i guarantee many who may agree with you would be the same people who'd stab you in the back for a Promotion but that's another topic for another time. I've said it before and Ill say it again the "Brotherhood" of the Job is a lost tradition but I dont see how lookin out after my own and denying those who have been laid off a job in my Dept. makes me that much less of a Brother FF. IMO it makes me more so one.
  2. And that's just what City Officials are lookin for Capt. ways to save money like not having to pay for a new recruits training. Let me ask you something, if you had a son, brother or cousin who had a great shot at getting on the Job and they refused him cause the Officials wanted to save money by taking a transfer would you be ok with that even after seeing your kin break their a** and do everything they were suppose to do to get on the Job? I know I'd be pretty pissed off .
  3. Yeah i said it and what's wrong with it? Maybe I'm lookin out for myself and my family cause i'm retiring and would like a little extra in my pension. What's wrong with that eveybody's doing it. It sucks guys get laid off but i'll worry about my fellow Union Brothers I work and eat with and their careers and families before an outsider. Sorry that's just the way life is. Maybe also some of these guys in other Depts. have real flesh and blood brothers or cousins who have a chance of gettin on the Job but won't because of trasnsfers, ever think about that? How would you feel about FDNY taking transfers and not hiring you after you broke your a** taking and meeting all the steps to get on a Job you've always wanted to do. Don't critisize me for lookin after my own well being and that of my friends i work with!
  4. Firebirds? Oh yeah those imbosols. Weren't they shot down by the New haven 20? Those guys won their case I thought.
  5. Maybe the Union members of these other Depts. dont want any new guys to be hired after all it may cut into filling vacancies with OT for these other Union brothers. Just a thought.
  6. Thanks Bud, I knew I forgot a line. LOL!
  7. After these misguided individuals finish with OWS maybe they should go and protest outside all of the Universities and Colleges who charge astronomical tuitions to attend putting individuals in debt up to their a** before they even graduate and find a job. There's something nobody has any control over and won't say s*** about.
  8. I don't think it's so much the cause, it's the caliber of people and their methods of protesting. Their actions are hurting many small businesses and many of them want to end Capitalism and want entitlements aka Socialism. These are the hypocrites who are walkin around with all new ipods and asking for a moment of silence for Steve Jobs. It's just away for some of them to gain notoriety and 10 seconds of fame. Have you seen some of the interviews? Do you feel it's right for the Government to pay for ones College Education. This is the message many of these morons are trying to get out. No I don't feel it's right for CEOS and other Corporation Executives to get bonuses why their stockolders are struggling but is it any different then many Union Executive Board memebers using your Union dues to live the life of luxury and embezzling millions of dollars in union dues. Greed is a problem for many not just in Big Business. IMO I feel most of these protesters are ignorant and hypocritical and have just too much time on their hands. There's work out there you just have to be patient and look for it.
  9. LOL! Exactly my thoughts. It's nothing but another Woodstock without the music. Most of these imbosols don't even know why they're there!
  10. Like I said if you deserve it then you should get it. Never said there weren't guys out there with legitimate injuries but for everyone that's justified, there's one that's not and we all know that's a fact. These scam artists make us all look bad and should be dealt with accordingly. This is the reason why many outsiders look at us the way they do and those in the Private Sector really don't feel sorry for those of us gettin laid off cause many of them are in the same boat to. In fact I've heard many in the general public say stop your complainig you'll have plenty of time now to work your "B Job". And ya know what, for the most part they're right. The Job has gone in the shitter and seems to be now more of an inconvenience for members then a Profession. They put the Fire Service on the back burner and everything else comes first.
  11. I hate to say it but let's be real fellows we are many times our own worst enemy. All you ever hear during these times and when negotiating a contract with these City officials is the number of guys who are out on 207a. It's not so much the members fault I guess because it was the Conference of Mayors who agreed on this disability package and has made it so easy to obtain, so why not try and get out for a hangnail. Maybe the City should start hiring Private Investigators to follow up on these cases like other States do and if 207a members are found of cheating the system incarcerate the bums and there you'll have the $$$$$ to prevent such layoffs. Maybe it's also time for all members of all the Locals to bring back the ole "peer pressure" and embarass some of the phonies out there from even filing. If your legitamately hurt then fine you deserve it but if your caught scamming you deserve what you get. I thought our Job was a "Brotherhood". BTW how many guys does NRFD have out on 207a?
  12. I know but lets not forget the type of Profession we're talking about. Many times quick rational decisions have to be made to protect or save one's life or property and why not have those who are most competent regardless of their residency, After all we're not talking about hiring people to work at a new Department Store opening up in our Community. We're in a very hazardous Job where seconds count. I've seen guys who lived and those who still live in the municipality they work in and can't tell you the street name behind the Station they've been workin in for the past 20 yrs so does it really matter in the long run?
  13. What I don't understand is most the surrounding Municipalities will only hire off a residency list but as soon as a person is off Probation or even while still on in some cases, they are allowed to move elsewhere. Maybe it's time for NY Depts. to adopt the same policies as many Connecticut Depts. and have one list. Who gives a rats a** where somebody lives, i want the best person for the job! Would you rather have an individual who was number one on an "out of town" list backing you up or some guy that got a final grade of a 70% and was 100 on the "in town" list? Like I said not too many individuals even reside anymore in the Towns, Villages or Cities where they work. It's not like years ago and some places have a very scarce legitamate picking pool to even choose from. There's many people who just don't want the Job, no matter how much you beg them to apply form it.
  14. Will YFD offer rides to the testing site and reminder and wake up calls for the test? After all it's only fair for those less fortunate.
  15. Now that's a perfect example of being Cool, Calm, and Collective. No doubt that BC has seen his fare share of Jobs.
  16. Seth does the BC have an Aide and if so what is his function? Many problems the BC encounters can be mitigated or completely resolved if he has a reliable and responsible Aide. Again the big word is "if". Many good aides can actually make their BC look good. Then there are those who are nothing but personal chauffers.
  17. I wonder if they provide wake up calls and rides to the testing center like they do up here? I think NOT!!!! I love how they say it's your responsibility to pick up the "prep" manual it won't b mailed to you. Good for them, it's nice to see there are still some Depts. out there that won't lower their Standards! You want the Job that much then go get it!
  18. Unfortunately Capt they only seem to take forever when they're screwin around with them for whatever reason! There should b no reason why it takes so long the tests are graded with a computer. I have a friend who took an Atlanta PD test and all applicants had their grades before they left the classroom!
  19. Good Job Somers FD! Looks like you handled the whole Incident without having half of Westchester there!
  20. Not necessarily true. Many rigs in Career Depts. don't have guys with yrs experience. Some depts. may even have a whole truck co. with everyone on it having 5yrs and less. This has happened and I believe still happens in FDNY. Then you've got the rig with some guys who have 20yrs but still no experience and are incapable of doing the basics correctly. Speaking of Basics, I strongly feel we get too wrapped up in the FAST team concept and policies instead of worrying about our members being competent in the Basic Firefighting Skills. Get a proper sized and supplied handline in the right location, with adequate and properly timed ventilation and good chances we won't even need a Fast Team. I guarantee if you look at many of the NIOSH reports you'll see many LODs were caused by members not following proper procedures, incompetence and complacency.Don't get me wrong I think the FAST team concept is great but there's a time and place for it. Do we really need a Fast team standing by for a mattress Job or contents in a bedroom, not to mention many FDs including Career are shorthanded and I may need those 2-3 guys standing outside, inside performing critical tasks that need to get done immediately and aren't. Don't get these tasks completed and that mattress job in the hallway has now entered the dumbwaiter shaft and is about to take the cockloft of the 5 story H shaped occupied MD. I'd rather utilize everyone at the scene to get that fire u/c instead of worrying about how many guys do I have outside in case the "What if" happens, especially if I'm workin with a skeleton crew. JMO. PS Now lower a Depts Standards and you really have a problem on your hand!
  21. What's the big deal there's Career Depts. in Westchester that already have this. Many Depts. have been dumbing down the Job for yrs. Doesn't make it right but that's what has happened to the Fire Service. FDNY is seeing it now more then ever.
  22. Unfortunately there Capt. that's not necessarily true. Doesn't matter what the size of the Dept. there's still plenty of BS to deal with that's just the way it is these days.
  23. Anybody know what's the story with that Crash Truck they've had for a few yrs. now?
