  1. And dont forget about playing baseball and sliding into what you thought was 3rd ! Learned what a cow muffin was .... The water in the pool had to be the coldest water I ever was in. ... the bug juice that was something else. Dont forget about Blind Paul !
  2. I parents shipped me off to that place in the early 70's. I think I went there wnhen I was 10 or 11. We would be there for two weeks for summer camp. There was about 5 or 6 cabins with kids from all over westchester county. Each cabin was set up by age groups and had 2 or 3 counslers . It was a shock for a lot of us when we went as we had never been away from home before... it was great after the first couple of days. There were sports, swimming, arts and crafts, hiking and tons of fun stuff to do. the most vivid memory was that I cut my foot open swimming in a river, and the counsler had to carry me back to the compound, it must have been 1-2 miles and stiched it up by a nurse on site. A few years ago, I drove past the old site when I realized what it was, I drove back and stopped and thought about the time I spent there a long time ago.

  4. How are the various volunteer co's in NYC dispatched ? Do they fall into the same chain of command ? How do they operate ?
  5. Does any dept use quints as first due ? If so how do you use it ? What size aerial ? Any problems with reach ? If you had to do it all over again, what would you do or not do ? PM me if you have info that you may not want seen posted. Please no negative comments about other depts, trying to for a clear opinion for the future. Thanks
  6. I was astonished att he fact the LT didnt say a thing to the FF's at the car fire and stop an unsafe act. I also think the "hamming up" witht e nozzle was uncalled for. What if the line became charged with they were "wrestling over the pipe" ? Last week we saw the MPO break his arm. I spent some visiting the Boston Fire Dept and really like that dept, but I cant believe the unsafe acts they show on TV. But , one thing should be a wake up call to all of us..... auto alarms go off for a reason. How many times have you been in the same situation. I can count on 2 or 3 hands how many times the auto alarm turned into a job or two !
  7. Good video, last time I was in Conway I saw big blue running to a few calls. Good job. Next time I'm in Conway I'll be looking for a ride - a - long.
  8. We recently had a class given by the Toyota dealer in our area, it was an excellent class. The dealership , along with the regional VP for safety gave a 1/2 hr class and then we went thru the 3 models with a mechanic. Lasted bout 2 hours. Lot of good detail as pointed out in the article. toyota has a Prius emergency response guide. # OTH02U emergency responce guides for selected Toyota alternative fuel vehicles may be reviewd at http://techinfo.toyota.com there 2004 2 generation and a 2006 model year guides.
  9. FEMA lost all it's muscle when it became a part of the Department of Homeland Security. As a stand alone unit of the Federal goverment, it acted swiftly and placed the proper people in the positions that needed to be filled during crisis. Placing firefighters/emt's and highly trained emergency response personal in community outreach positions is a slap in the face. We train day in and day out to perform the task that are needed as "boots on the ground" not to perform "civil affairs jobs". Granted, this is a disaster unseen by many of us let alone the entire country in thier lifetimes, was the goverment prepared...NO. Were we ? I'd say that most of us were looking at the TV and saying ..OK what do I need to do if this thing comes my way? Even if we think about it, we are planning for it. This goverment can take care of millions of people in far away lands, but cannot take care of it's own at home. It takes days, if not weeks to move an army brigade , but it takes hours to move well intentioned, highly trained and competant rescue teams. For the last 4 years all we have heard is how we need to train the first responders in WMD, terror attacks, bombings. In some cases we have been provided with useless equipment by the fed gov. We got the training, always had it. Now , here was the countries test.... I'm totally against self -dispatch and believe in a organized response to these types of incidents. FEMA should be taken out of DHS, set up a regional co-ordinator from this countries emergency services and activate those assets when needed. FEMA should not need a prod from the President to get moving, it should not take orders from the military, but should work jointly with them as they do bring a strong leadership role to these incidents. I believe the NOPD, NOFD are doing one heck of a job under such adverse conditions. My heart and prayers go out to all our brothers/sisters police officers and ems people on the gulf coast. Remember, not only did and continue to respond, but they themselves have been affected by loosing thier homes, loved ones . How many perished during the storm ? When that comes out, I feel the emergency services in this county will be in mournig. Just my opinion.

  14. Thanks, more worried about stabilityof the rig then making holes. I few years ago one of my guys set up the 85' with one jack on the lawn. Fully extended trying to get to the roof, the jack sunk into the lawn, even with the pad. Made the rig unstable. Again, I'm an expierenced tower user, mainly street set up, not priivate driveways.
  15. Thanks all for the info, now I poise another question. Most responses dealt with quints in the urban response, city streets etc. How does the quint concept - 75' in suburban where setbacks might be 50' - 60' from the road ? Does the quint go up drive ways for the typical p/d ?Are typical residental driveways strong enough for a quint ?I operated a 85' mid mount tower and that has trouble reaching from the road do to setback and outrigger spread. Again, thank you for your info and probably will visit.
  16. Those white mask are to block out particles, not gases. Use your SCBA. Taking short cuts only endangers you.

  21. I spoke with my contact at DFD today, he told me that the $ 75 fee includes taking the CPAT. After the written test they will send you to the test. That is the info I got this morning. Although, he did tell me it would be a good idea to have a current cpat card... he did not have a time frame as to how long they would honor, or even if they would honor existing cards.
  22. Thats the place. I remember my old man taking me there when I was a kid. You cant find food like that here in Ct. When ever I'm down the PC way visiting relatives I stop in there or at Franks .
