You're not kidding Ang! C'mon fellas let's calm it down up there a little huh? How am I supposed to work on my suntan with all of these fires, and rescues taking place; requiring me to be here manning the EMTBravo Command Post/EOC?

Hats off to Westchester County Dept's both Career and Volunteer who had a busy week with saving lives and property in all parts of the County. Kept up the good work that the people of this County reley on getting it done!

  4. E106MKFD liked a post in a topic by JBE in How much leeway do your dispatchers have?
Meaning leeway with assignments to incidents, or making relocations, or asking incident commanders what they want?? I'll give you some examples because we are presently getting nickled and dimed for showing initiative.
Last weekend, a city bus comes off the Clearview Expressway and collides with a tractor trailer, a building and a few other vehicles. Rescues 4 and 3 are assigned. As the situation winds down, Rescue 3 takes up and begins to head home. They are special called to a fire due to numerous calls coming into the Queens dispatchers. The supervising dispatcher(not me) is then contacted by one of the brass at HQ wanting to know why this was done.
The regulations state that if the normally assigned Rescue(Or Squad) is not available, the IC must be notified and advise the IC if they want a Rescue(Or Squad). If the request is not made, the nearest available Rescue is assigned upon transmission of the All Hands. When it comes to the Squads, the only exception is if that Squad is operating as an Engine company on the first alarm assignment, then the next up Squad goes on the 10-75. Example: Squad 61 is first or second due to Jacobi and a 10-75 gets dumped, Squad 41 goes.
I understand the need for rules and regulations, but this, IMO was a heads up move, taking initiative. Needless to say, that supervisor will probably be spanked. Never mind the fact that R-3 was about 5 minutes away, and it would have been an easy 20-30 minutes before R-2 got there from Brooklyn.
Next incident, 2nd Alarm out in Staten Island last week. Fire is in a commercial building, 10-75 transmitted, relocators on the road as per SOP. 2nd floor gives way and dumps a number of firefighters down onto the 1st floor. Maydays transmitted, 2nd Alarm transmitted, no 10-66 transmitted, and I'm unsure if the dispatcher prompted the IC to see if they wanted it dumped. Staten Island Dispatchers re-direct two truck companies off of other runs to the fire, and then special call TL-77 to pick up Rescue Collapse Unit 5 and Special Call Rescue 2. I've been told that the supervisor(again, NOT me) is probably going to get spanked for this one as well. Never mind the fact that the additional help can always be turned around if not needed. Never mind the fact that not only me, but a number of my colleagues thought this was a heads up move.
What sorts of latitude, as dispatchers, do you have when it comes to situations when you're gonna have to use your head, and not rely on a piece of paper, or what a Chief from a specific department wants?? I ask this question because over the past few years, some of the things that are normally an FDNY Chiefs responsibility have been placed in the hands of the dispatchers. Setting up staging areas at multiple alarm fires, when unless we are around the corner and can see it, we have no idea what the road conditions might be, Transmitting the 10-76 or 10-77 in a building that meets that criteria as soon as a multiple is transmitted for that building.
I'm looking forward to hearing what you guys have to say. Thank you.

The Aerialscope has served the F.D.N.Y. well for many years. It's only a shame that they have a Seagrave rig rather than a Mack CF to attach it to. There is nothing out there that compares to the Mack CF's we used to have ... they were work horses that couldn't be killed.

CAREFUL! You might say it was easy....but is it fair to everyone based purely on racial background?!?! Only the results will tell! You're excellent score, a result of studying for a love of the job no doubt, might not mean a THING! If the job wasn't simply handed to enough of the right people, you might be put into the "second class category" of people who tried hard. You silly bunch!
I hope everyone finds my anger and frustration to be but, thinly veiled...
  7. E106MKFD liked a post in a topic by bad box in Boehner Blocks Capitol Ceremony for Last WWI Vet
This is shameful, but it's what I have come to expect from today's GOP. Politicians like the wimpy, cry baby Rep. John Boehner who have no respect for Cops, Firefighters or the military. He's never placed himself in harm's way to protect his country or another human being. He stood with the GOP when they held The Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Bill hostage while demanding that Democrats join the GOP in extending tax breaks for the wealthiest 2% of Americans. After getting the tax breaks for their wealthy corporate campaign supporters, they subsequently cut the funding for Zadroga in half before passing it. BTW, Rep. John Boehner didn't even stay in Washington to vote on the final bill which occurred on December 22nd, 2010. He along with many other GOP rich kids had already gone home to celebrate Christmas with their families. I wonder what it feels like to walk away from your responsibilities as an elected public servant whenever you feel like it, leaving your work undone. As a Firefighter, I wouldn't know that feeling, nor did I ever have the desire to abandon my responsibilities for my personal enjoyment ... Rep. John Boehner is a disgrace.
Thank you for your service to our country Mr. Buckles ... May you rest in peace ...

If Buchanan was only called for their cascade unit, there is no reason those responding on it have to be strucutal firefighters, since that is not what they were called for. Other cascade units in Westchester respond staffed by non-firefighters (Greenburgh CD comes to mind).
If manpower is needed (this isn't specific to this call or to Montrose so don't jump down my throat) then an IC can and usually does call for it. Sounded like enough personnel were there to handle this fire, so stop the hating.
16fire5 - you're right, people have to right to ask about an incident to learn from it, but if people are on here just to "stir the pot," nobody benefits from that. And you are a smart enough guy to realize when that pot is being stirred. There are far fewer incident discussions, photos shared or even discussions of any kind on here anymore because everyone is a critic and a lot of these "critics" have personal agendas.
As far as I'm concerned, "all the chips fell into place" for this fire. I've been to a few fires caused in the same manner as this one, and they've resulted in the destruction of rooms and total homes. The homeowner was fortunate that someone drove by and saw the fire, got her out of the house, the FD had a quick response and the fire was mostly contained to the exterior of the home.
She's lucky and Montrose deserve's a pat on the back. Ignore the haters.

FF Nechis (now Capt. Nechis) shows off the new bedding for the men of Sta. #2. It is believed that his fluff and fold technique was what got FF Nechis noticed on his way up the promotion ladder. He also has an eye for proper dust ruffle pleating.

Here FF Russ Ciotti (now Lt. Ciotti) shows off his work after intense classroom demonstrations of the proper throw pillow placement by FF Nechis.

The first of the five new Ferrara rescues being constructed for FDNY is finished and will be assigned to Rescue 5. Here are a few photos of it on display at the Long Island Fire, Rescue & EMS Mega Show, which is going on this weekend at Nassau Coliseum. My apologies for the "cluttered" and blurry shots. Was very difficult to get a good shot with all the people around, and a "point and shoot" job doesn't always get along with sub-par lighting situations. But, until the rig is delivered and the "experts" get access to it, these will have to do.

I highly disagree with you posting the department's name for starters. Second what agency are you in let's see how good you guys are. Everyone has issues there is atleast one dept in that same area that's worse than the one you listed, but everyone has issues no one can be as perfect as your agency.

Today, while sitting at the VAC I kept hearing a certain Westchester FD tone out and tone out and tone out for manpower. After 15-20 minutes, they called a neighboring department Mutual Aid. We all know how bad some VACs are, but it is B-A-D when an FD is unable to cover a call.
And, around the same time as this, I couldn't help but notice a 60 Control dispatcher trying to communicate with a unit, and telling that unit he can't hear them because another self dispatched FD was all over 46.26. Don't they have / use a fire ground channel???
I call this two steps forward, one step back as there are plenty of departments that make that extra effort to be as professional as they can be, and then you have departments like the ones mentioned that set us all back in time.
It's 2011 guys. Either get with the times or give up.

All though the truck does the job and looks great... it still has its problems and normal wear and tear it has recieved over the past 20 years. It has responded to a lot of calls over that time period and it is definitely time to replace this truck especially that it is the only truck responding to all of these call when the engines can alternate. I think it is the right choice to replace this and move on to a newer tower ladder. Especially when it struggles to get up all of the big hills in the town.
