When I was in Cape Cod a few years ago, the local fire department was giving out 3”x3” silver scotchlite stickers with the Maltese cross on them in red with a big C in the center. They were handing them out telling people to put them about 8 inches off the floor on the child’s bedroom. They said that it aided them in their search, and unlike the Tot-Spotter stickers Perps weren’t able to see them from the outside. The stickers are very similar to the apartment number stickers, and the exit stickers you see in apartment buildings.

At Brewser Polo Club Fire, the Putnam County Fuel truck came and filled up the tower ladders and a few tankers. Truck belonged to the county highway department.

You can listen for 40-Control all you want, but i don't think you will hear anything, unless its the last Sunday of the month.

There are also departments who’s main priority are parades, where members get yelled at by other members for not going to the parade when they are staying back to cover the calls. I hate to see the day when somebody loses their house or even their lives when a department is at a parade and can't cover the call. I’m sure they will love the excuse “We were at a parade”. The people of the town trust in you to protect them. They don’t really care if you march the straightest 6 towns away. Also valuable drill time is lost for parades and parade prep. Don’t get me wrong there are many departments that take a parade into consideration. They have a crew stand by at their fire house during the parade, set up for a dual dispatch while they are away and don’t take vital apparatus out of district such as rescues.

In Putnam when talking to 40 control (or should I say Putnam 911) we use plain english. No 10-codes with the exception of some people using "going 23, or 23 the area" which is the police code for on location 10-23.

Does any one know how the harnesses are issued in the FDNY , i heard they are no longer given as personal's, but as a set to rotated on the tours.

ALS, Have you ever deployed your bailout rope from a leg pocket? In firefighter survival classes I have seen many problems with the rope in a coat pocket. One being the lower strap from the pack keeps the rope from coming out. Our departments standard practice is to keep it in our bunker pocket. Of all the times i have seen the decend preformed, that seems to be the most efficent. But like you said the way your train is always your best way.

Just found this on morning prides website http://www.morningpride.com/products/cloth...ing.asp?p=4&i=8 Photos above illustrate a rope pocket designed to accomodate an FDNY rope system. Pockets can be (and should be) easily adapted for alternative rope systems (at no additional charge). Consult the Total Fire Group offices for details. Any one know if the fdny is using this?

One of my friends from the FDNY said that they took back all the bail out ropes from the fire fighters. Also that on the newer gear there are no bunker pockers on the pants where alot of them kept their rope. A article on firehouse.com says somthing liek that below. Ropes had been part of the standard gear for firefighters for decades, but they have been a source of contention. In 1980, two firefighters fell to their deaths using a newly developed rope, which, an investigation found, had been put into service despite warnings that it might not support the two firefighters and their gear. In 2000, the city withdrew an improved version of the personal escape rope and limited the distribution of harnesses that had been carried by firefighters for lowering themselves to safety, citing their weight, bulkiness and maintenance issues. The use of the remaining harnesses fell, firefighters said, because they had to be re-adjusted for size when the gear was passed along to other firefighters at the change of shifts. The firefighters' union filed a contract grievance but lost, according to Michael Axelrod, a lawyer who handled the matter for the union.

In Mahopac, All members report to the fire house then respond to the scene in the trucks. With the exception of members "directly" passing the scene, or fire police.

While in Alantic City at the FDIC east conference I came across a cool item called the "Savajake". I brought it just to have the newest toy in my department. Not really caring if it was at all useful. After using it at a few drills and just fooling around at my station, I have found it to be very vesitle and easy to use. Our chief even purchased a few for other members in my department.
