    I can't believe people are shocked at the Henry family being pissed at this. Lose a child and see how reasonable you become. The family is pissed and will always be pissed. Their kid did something stupid and got himself killed. This wasn't a malicious or pre-meditated attack on Officer Hess. So the family has to come to grips with that. They have no villain or clear reason to hold on to and explain the loss of their child. Any number of things happen differently that night, Officer Hess never has to kill anyone, he never gets his leg broken, and DJ goes home alive.
    Wait, so we're expecting the Henry family to essentially say, "Thanks for shooting my son and saving us the stress and burden of a wrongful death suit in the event that he might have stuck and killed someone that night."
    The DOJ will eventually exonerate Aaron of wrong doing, he should enjoy his award, and we should write off the Henry's claims as irrational and the result of emotional trauma.

    Police Officer Aaron Hess is a hero and saved lives the night that Criminal Danroy Henry attempted to run over Police Officers and may have killed civilians in the process. Its very simple:
    1) PO Hess = good guy.
    2) Criminal Henry = bad guy.
    Any questions?

    There's a difference between "indicted" and "convicted." DoJ under Obama/Holder LOVES to second guess police officers.
    Hats off to the PPD PBA, Officer Hess deserves this award.

    I'm so sick of this nonsense excuse for guys acting unprofessionally. They want the benefits of being considered an "employee" without the responsibilities. Like it or not you are in a position of public trust and you are held to a higher standard than the average citizen. And these are the same guys that say "career or volunteer doesn't matter, we're all the same." Legally, yes, you are the same. But you will only be viewed as equal by the general public when you act like a professional. That means training, that means demeanor, that means respect for your uniform and equipment. If you don't have any respect for yourself and your job then you can't expect anyone else to respect you.

    I don't think anyone with a higher class felony should be allowed in any emergency service under any conditions...period. With action comes consequence...many wouldnt be able to get hired as a professional with their convictions..why should it not be the same standard on the volunteer side?

    Clearly this should have been handled by Law Enforcement and not the FD. A periemeter should have been set up along with ESU and a Hostage/Crisis Negotiator called in to open a dialogue with the E.D.F. (Emotinally Disturbed Feline).

    Where in the definition of "Volunteer" does it say lack responsibility? It seems to me to be the ever growing "attitude" within volunteers. Whether it is a new mandate for training , or a change in operations for better overall function of your home dept. It seems to me that the "excuse" of "I'm a volunteer, why should I have to take OSHA," or "I'm a volunteer why should I have to be at my ambulance when I am rostering that time." The last time I checked when I became a volunteer at the age of 16, I joined because it was something I enjoyed doing and wanted to help. Just because you don't receive any type of monetary payments does not mean you cant uphold yourself to the same standards as everyone else. I for one feel that without changing that outlook, volunteers will be a rapidly dying breed. Now for those that don't me, and may think I am "voly bashing" get your facts straight. I have been in my dept for 10 years, and put as many hours as any other active voly. I have not forgotten where I came from, and continue to provide the service and have the attitude as of a volunteer just as I would at work. The main objective of this topic is to answer the following ques. and agree or disagree with the above statement, (Because I am a volunteer I don't have to uphold responsibility.) Is this attitude moral oriented? Is it something that can be changed? If so how?

    I am going to get on my very young and gung-ho soapbox right now and speak my mind. Feel free to let the flame war ensue since I'll be opening Pandora's Box right now.
    Currently we have numerous, very active threads going on in the main board and that is fantastic. I am happy to be part of a very active discussion board that allows for open discussion on any topic we so choose totalk about. There is always a new post or discussion or someone chiming in on something that provides a new direction, or insight on the topic.
    What does bother's me though, is the priorities that I feel many people have, as to what is actually important to the fire service, and it reflects on the types of threads posted and the activity of each thread. Currently we have threads about types of colors on chiefs cars, blue lights, other secondary/tertiary discussions as to who should have what. I have no problem with these threads as they enlighten others as to certain laws and other regulatory information.
    What does bother me though is when you have a member post a topic about resources in the county and what department has special teams, only one person answers… Why? Do we really care so little about preplanning and foresight before an incident that we would much rather discuss the correct angle of chevrons over running an incident efficiently and smoothly? I know I personally was really looking forward to seeing what departments have around the county, so in case my department ever needs assistance to something we cannot ourselves handle butsomeone else can, they can be called upon.
    We also have the "Tactical considerations" forum, which is a fantastic idea, but it rarely gets used, and when it does, only 2-5 people chime in with an answer. If you're wrong with an answer, who cares? It's only online training and you'll learn from your mistake. It's better done here, then out at an actual incident.
    Sure I like to "buff out" every now and then as much as the next guy and get ideas from apparatus photos, but I think proactively talking and learning from other people about pre planning actual operations, or what an IC would have done differently at a fire is much more important then who won what at who's parade. There is such a vast wealth of knowledge on this board, it puzzles me that no one wants to actually release information for whatever reason they so choose.
    Not a day goes by where I do not learn something new about the fireservice, and this board has definitely supplied me and numerous other people with a plethora of information. I can only hope that more people talk about the operational and tactical side of the fire service, as to me this is what truly matters and where departments stand out. The general population does not care about your roto-ray, or your undercover chief's car. They want their fire put out quickly and efficiently and their family member cut out of their car without any more harm being done. Sure things look cool, but to me, what is far, far more important is providing a homeowner or taxpaying company relief when we show up because operationally, we look like an organized, well oiled army doing everything in our power to help them out.
    I'm not sure if I'm totally off base here and singling myself out, and this is no way a shot at anyone in particular but this is just an observation I have been making over the last few months and felt like it was time to share my opinion.
    edit: transfered from M.Word and the format was screwed up

    I stopped wearing a streamlight years ago after getting hung up on it several times and the more I thought about it and observed others the more I realized I was wearing a flashlight that pointed to the ground while crawling. Now its just a vulcan for me and most of the guys I work with. They are light weight sit nice and the blue LED's on the back stand out very nicely for visual with your partner.
    As far as helmet lights go...no way, no how for me. I want nothing extra on my helmet to become an entanglement magnet and teaching over the years I've seen them cause more problems then they prevent and funny enough..most people I run into with them don't turn them on when it comes time to work as they are focused someplace else. Its bad enough with some of the face shield connectors used on some helmets now protruding from the sides of the helmets, the eagle front piece holder all causing entanglement problems.
    Couple that with the amount of crap they are putting on the back of our SCBA's sticking out, the DRD's that will catch nails like snookie catches cold sores and then we add to the mix with a flashlight on our coats, helmet and all kinds of other crazy crap. I'm wide enough naturally..I don't need extra help.

    I don't really see why its productive to compare a Westchester volunteer department to the FDNY.
    What IS productive is for everyone to go back to their departments this week, dust off your MCI and major incident plans, and take a look at what YOUR department might do in the event of that type of situation. As the old saying goes "No battle plan survives first contact with the enemy," but at the same time its good to have a baseline to work from. Talk to your neighboring department, or for those of you in NY, the county and see who has what and when it can get there.
    Lets stop criticizing or focusing on what NYC is doing, since NONE of our departments have the training, manpower, equipment or capabilities of FDNY. Instead, worry about what WE are going to do. As NJMedic just demonstrated, this can happen to ANY department with a highway. In the last week we've all gotten our lessons in planning watching what these departments have done, now if we don't go back and prepare, shame on us. We as a fire service are REALLY good at telling the citizens to prepare for disaster with smoke detectors, first aid and disaster kits, but we're not always so good at preparing ourselves on a regular basis.

    No reason the site owner can't stir a little sh!t from time to time
    I'll say this much; in my (fairly limited) experience thus far in the fire service, I've observed one thing; cops generally get to a working fire before we do - and they go in and do everything that needs to be done, and sometimes more than they really should be doing - and all kudos for them for doing it. Would anyone in their right minds consider this 'competition'? If we're not all here to serve our communities in the best way we know how, we're in the wrong jobs.
    I'm pretty sure I've read of municipalities which have taken consolidation of services to the logical extreme, and have everyone cross-trained as cops, firefighters, and EMTs. Maybe that's taking it a bit too far, but if you don't have a *real good* insight into the respective jobs (and I for one don't) it's not such a great idea to pontificate about it...

    My mistake ny10570. You're right about L'Enfant. Isn't an entire section of DC named after him? Or am I thinking someone else?
    Also, Izzy, Dick Winters didn't even get considered for this kind of thing. I totally agree that this soldier should be honored, I mean, hell, he lied about his age so that he could get into the war. You've gotta respect that. All I'm saying is there is a procedure in place for who gets to Lie in State, and this is the first time this type of situation has ever been brought up, so its understandable that some might disagree with changing the way things work.

    Here is the list of people who have lied in state in the Rotunda:
    * 1852 – Henry Clay, long-serving Senator and Representative, Secretary of State, Speaker of the House, and presidential candidate
    * 1865 – President Abraham Lincoln, assassinated while in office
    * 1868 – Thaddeus Stevens, Representative from Pennsylvania
    * 1874 – Charles Sumner, Senator from Massachusetts
    * 1875 – Vice President Henry Wilson, served under Grant, died in office
    * 1881 – President James Garfield, assassinated while in office
    * 1886 – John A. Logan, Senator from Illinois
    * 1901 – President William McKinley, assassinated while in office
    * 1909 – Pierre L'Enfant – although he died in 1825, he was disinterred, laid in state upon reinternment at Arlington National Cemetery
    * 1917 – Admiral George Dewey, Admiral of the Navy
    * 1921 – The Unknown Soldier for World War I
    * 1923 – President Warren Harding, died in office
    * 1930 – President William Howard Taft, President 1909–13, also Chief Justice 1921–30
    * 1948 – John J. Pershing, General of the Armies of the United States
    * 1953 – Robert Taft, U.S. Senator and Majority Leader
    * 1958 – The Unknown Soldiers for World War II and the Korean War
    * 1963 – President John F. Kennedy, assassinated while in office
    * 1964 – General Douglas MacArthur, General of the Army
    * 1964 – President Herbert Hoover, President 1929–33
    * 1969 – President Dwight Eisenhower, President 1953–1961, Supreme Allied Commander during World War II
    * 1969 – Everett Dirksen, Illinois Senator, Senate Minority Leader 1959–1969
    * 1972 – J. Edgar Hoover, FBI Director 1929–1972

    * 2004 – President Ronald Reagan, President 1981–1989
    * 2006–07 – President Gerald Ford, President 1974–1977
    As you can see, only 8 servicemen have EVER Lied in State at the Rotunda, 1 of which was a President AND the Supreme Allied Commander of WWII (Ike.) All of them were AT LEAST 5 Star Officers or Unknown Soldiers. While I would never take away from the service of this heroic individual, there are protocols for this type of thing. A burial at Arlington National Cemetery seems, to me anyway, to be a much more fitting honor for this hero. The man fought a war and should be buried where with his fellow warriors.
