  1. Is he in Danbury now? I've driven by his shop in Walden a thousand times and the website says he's in Walden.
  2. I've flown both and I think Jet Blue has the edge. Yeah, the the DTV of Jet Blue beats out the XM radio of Airtran but Jet Blue has other pluses also. Airtran has 31 inch for coach compared to Jet Blue's 32" behind the emergency wing seats and 34" in rows 1-9 (in front of the wing seats). Sure, the 1 to 3 inch difference doesn't seem like much but you'll appreciate that extra leg room an hour in flight.
  3. Here's both singing Lamb Lies Down. IMHO Gabriel blows Collins out of the water. Gabriel You decide....
  4. From Firefighter Close Calls & The Secret List
  5. Yes, NFPA 1583, Standard on Health-Related Fitness Programs for Fire Department Members. Here's a link where you can view the standard online: NFPA Code list Once on the page, you can view all NFPA documents by selecting the appropriate link.
  6. Oops, my bad. Didn't see that you already mentioned it in a previous post.
  7. Maybe someone should petition Vinnie's and Cody's new shop for producing an EMS bike: V-Force Customs I think OCC needs the competition.
  8. Just because EMTBravo and Granville Enterprises are two different names doesn't mean they couldn't have been run by the same person or persons. There is a lot of name changing in the business world as far as DBA's and such. The faces are all the same, they just reorganize under a different name.
  9. Roger that, my mistake.
  10. Please tell me you're kidding! The only time the pump operator should be away from the engine is if the engine is parked down the street not being utilized. What would happen if one of the hundred things that can go wrong, does and the MPO isn't at the panel to address the problem? Additionally, with a structure fire, it's gonna take a lot more than to just "look out the window" to see the lights. The best idea if you're stuck in a jam with limited man power is wait for the calvary to show up. If you don't, your are going to loose a lot more than a house.
  11. The solution is easy.... Satellite Radio! I've had it for two years now and haven't looked back. Where else can you have a choice of some 20 rock stations, 5 country stations plus some 100 other stations to listen to when ever you want?
  12. Web design looks better but they should really work on getting the news accurate.
  13. The new rescue as posted in a previous thread. Rescue 134 Truck Information: Body Model: Saulsbury Body Material: Stainless Steel Cab Make/Model: E-ONE CII Cab Seats: 8 Engine: Detroit Series 60 515 HP Transmission: Allison EVS4000P Wheelbase: 206” Waterpump: Hale AP500
  14. It's a lot easier to do on paper then to enact. Both districts would need to be in favor of the change. Then joint hearings would need to take place then goto the respective town boards for approval. Then of course new assessments would need to be imposed to the land owners. So right off the bat, you would need four political bodies approval for what could be nothing more than move a line a mile.
  15. Apparently the writer of the article, or, more importantly the group crying foul doesn't know the law involving chief elections as the chief is not an elected department member. The department nominates a person for chief and it's up the the commissioners to accept or reject the nomination. What the commissioners are supposed to do is send the rejected nomination to back to the department instead of appointing someone else.
  16. In response to the original post, whether or not Westchester should re-evaluate its response / fire tax lines to incorporate a closest unit response, this would require a tremendous amount of political pandering and red tape. Being the county is made up of fire districts, fire protection districts, and other forms of municipal fire fighting forces, each area would be required by state law to follow different procedures. The easier approach that will have quicker results is something that has already been stated. Automatic aid. In a fire district case, I think, all that is required is a formal document be drawn up as to who is providing the aid, who is receiving it and the two governing bodies sign off on it. Oh yeah, there was this statement in a previous post: My answer to this is 1) are any of these "older members" a chief? If they are then they have to get with the times. It's no longer a good ole boys club, it's about protecting the public! If one of these members is not a chief, who cares what he or she thinks, since chances are they aren't going to be responding to these calls anyway. There have been numerous times were I've responded to calls and a neighboring piece of apparatus was there. WHO CARES!!!! One such place is in the area of Route 100 and Croton Falls Rd in the Somers Fire District. The key here is it's walking distance to one of the Croton Falls fire house that houses their rescue truck. Both departments were toned out because of conflicting reports of locations and the bottom line is Croton Falls sent the rescue and extricated the patient when needed, Somers ambulance transported and the operation worked out well. Most importantly was patient care was not compromised because of egos. To go one further there was an accident involving a police pursuit where the trooper collided into a utility pole. Croton Falls was at their house cleaning up from an all day brush fire as we were at one of our firehouses cleaning up from the same call. Members of Croton Falls could hear the crash and see the flashes from the blown transformer on the pole and took it upon them selves to head over (they let us know they were doing so) before we got the call. In fact, it was an "older member" of that department, who is also an ex chief (that a tee shirt was made up when he stepped down the first time, Doc22 knows who I'm talking about), was driving the rescue truck. They got there, did what they had to do until we got there and then we worked together for the remember of the incident. Bottom line: patient care was expedited due to a fore thought as opposed being delayed to egos.
  17. The Pro 97 is very easy to program if you get the Win97 programming software from http://www.starrsoft.com/. There's a 30 day free trial for the software then to register it's $25.00. You will also need to purchase the programming cable from Radio Shack which runs about $30 or so. With out the software, the scanner is rather difficult to program when it comes to the trunking. With the software, it's a breeze. You can import all the frequencies you might need from http://www.radioreference.com/ to the software.
  18. It is common that NYS DOT contracts with the local municipalities for snow removal on many of the state highways.
  19. New York State Town Law Section 175 spells out the rules for fire district elections in NYS. District elections, by law, must take place the second Tuesday of December. There are exceptions to this for about six districts within the state. The secretary of the district is responsible for the ballots and the Board of Commissioners of the said district appoints a "resident fire district elector" to act as chairman on the election. It is also law that the commissioners appoint between 2 and 4 fire district electors to act as inspectors and ballot clerks. The only requirement to be an elector is to be a registered voter of the town and to have been a resident of the town for 30 days prior to the election. The electors can be paid for service as long as the board of fire commissioner adopts a resolution providing such. Remember, that one needs no affiliation with the fire department of the district to be a commissioner, nor are the board of commissioners obligated to use anyone from the firefighting force to conduct business.
  20. I saw that Mythbuster episode too. Based on their data, cell phones will not ignite gasoline. I also remember seeing reports (and talking the firefighters that were there) that there was a gas station fire in New Paltz (Ulster Co.) where a cell phone was the documented cause of the fire. Regardless of whether it can or can't...... I also appears to me that the driver was not answering a cell phone and I would suspect that the ignition was due to static electricity from clothing.
  21. You're thinking of Rural Metro who was contracted to cover The Village of Rye Brook. They had either 2 or 4 (I forget) firefighters covering the station with a group of paid on call firefighters when needed. They didn't last very long there. It took one multi million dollar mansion to burn before things changed. Rural Metro FD has some presence in upstate NY (mostly EMS services) and they are big down south (Arizona area) for fire and ems.
  22. There is no problem driving Santa around as long as the vehicle is going to respond to alarms and not be "unavailable" because of driving Santa. I've responded to calls with Santa many times. The kids love Santa coming around with candy canes. The parents love seeing the kids be with Santa and take pictures. Sure, you get the occasional Scrooge's but that's the breaks. You can't please everyone so don't even bother trying.
  23. Buildings are popping up in KJ like weeds. They are not only building residential housing in droves but numerous commercial structures have recently been built in the village.
  24. It almost sounds to me you miss going there.
  25. I think most of the grade crossings have been closed to traffic have been blocked off so I've found out (the hard way). Some crossings have since had overpasses built over the TSP, Hosner Mountain Rd in Hopewell Jct being one of them. The Arthersburg Road crossing in Lagrangeville remains closed but a northbound exit ramp has since been built at Noxen Road and south bound exit and entrance ramps @ Arthersburg Rd. Rossway road in Pleasant Valley remains open as a grade crossing as previously stated. That's all I can think of for now.
