Let me add my 2 cents to this:
Tradition is electing your Fire Officers and Chiefs by popular vote and electing them because "it's their time"
Progress is electing your Fire Officers and Chiefs by their training and qualifications.

I guess we have to go over this one more time---risk a lot ---to save a lot. Incident commanders must have the knowledge/skills and ability to make split second decisions, wether your in Texas--New York or Alasks, its the same. Read the NIOSH report from this event and you will get an eyeopening.
Be safe brothers lets make sure our fire service leaders have the necessary tools to preform. This is a serious job, firefighters die.
How many departments have a bigger parade/convention budget then training budget?? more money invested in uniforms then turn out gear. All the bells and whistles and gagdets on 900k apparatus but not enough air packs.
sorry for sounding off but this death like many every year was preventable.

Better question is when does the clock start?? when 911 is called? when FD is notified? when page goes out? When apparatus respond?? Asking the Dispatchers on here---how long can it take from reciept of call till department is notified? then how long befor an apparatus logs on as responding ,not chiefs car,but a supression vehicle?. Lets not kid our selves it take a litle while from reciept of alarm at any fire station before the apparatus get on the road. Getting everyone to the map, Checking the address, making sure you know where the hydrants are, best route, getting dressed, all take a little time.

Barry your right on the options in Greenburgh. Edgemont area ie Greenville Fire district bothe "meets and bounds" are the same, would much rather make their own and not be part of the Town of Greenburgh for a few reasons.
1- it is generally felt in the Edgemiont area(scarsdale mailing) same physical area, that they cannot get anyone elected to the Town Board because of population--lowest in the Town
2- the Whole Town of Greenburgh votes for the supervisior and Board including all the incorporated towns and villiages
    ie elmsford,tarrytown irvington ect.
3- heres the kicker the Edgemont/Scarsdale does not repete does not want to consolidate with the School district in the Town of Greenburgh.! if they were a town and were forced to consolidate school dictrict THEN they could incorporate in to Scarsdale Schools.
And i do not see a big out cry from Eastchester to consolidate the three police departments ??
if consolidation comes it wont be pretty westchester is not prepared.

You can save your thanks...but lets get a few things straight here. First...I don't bleed the taxpayers...in fact most firefighters today are underpaid for the amount of services we provide and the majority of us are short staffed. So sorry you feel that that emergency services providers are the ones causing all the woes on the backs of the taxpayers. Oh wait..that's right I forgot...I pay taxes as well...the same taxes as everyone else and I'm willing to bet where I live..I'm paying a little more. What ever happened to you get what you pay for? And since you and I are similar in some ways as I totally appreciate your candor and pointed response (far too little of that on here anymore) I will kindly ablige you with the same and here it is: Get off our backs. I don't know what you do...but most in private corporations had the same options to be on this side. And I don't know too many of you who miss holidays with your families, nor wear 55 lbs of equipment or a ballistic vest while at work. High percentage disability payments? What exactly are you smoking? I don't worry about getting struck by a car while crossing the street sucking down a latte and crossant when at work. Every time the buzzer hits it could be something that I might not go home or be able to provide for my family at the same level I was if I didn't get hurt. And oh, that's right I do it because I serve to do a job that most would wet their pants, vomit or end up on medication if they tried. I'm sure you do have a decent package and I'm happy for you...but don't forget you work to make your corporation money...and more gets filtered to the top then you...look deeper into where your tax money goes on the local level and then you tell me about disability, overtime "padding" etc. I don't get off of work at 1 or 2 to get paid till 4. I don't get double or triple overtime pay and I certainly haven't sat at home with my family on several thanksgivings and christmas.
For all you others that whine and talk about corporations in the same breath as public sector employees...here's a little story for you.
There are 3 cookies on a table in the front of a room. There is a CEO, a mayor and the crowd is taxpayers on one side, municipal employee unions on the other. The taxpayers are screaming they want all 3 cookies...each union is saying they want a larger piece of a cookie. The CEO stands up...calms the crowd and says "guys relax I got it...picks up 2 cookies...walks down the aisle and turns towards the taxpayers and yells..."those guys on my right are trying to take your cookie." Go figure.
And whoever said that federal employees do well...look at the salaries again...I was one and I couldn't maintain my style of life for me or my kids based on that salary as an officer. And many of those salaries were increased because of the loss of talented and critically needed employees to the private sector.
Keep sipping the kool aid...and getting your info from Fox news and the papers. Fox news is officially off my list with their anti labor rhetoric and particularly the attack on emergency services providers by wakco's like Glenn Beck (never watched him when I was a Fox News fan) and O'Reilly (who was a teacher no less). Oh by the way their millionaires from their shows and books...but I bet if their a** caught on fire or clutched their chest they wouldn't give a s*** about what local taxes their paying on their large houses.

Let's see judging by your age (21-24) you just paid your taxes and feel you're being screwed. It's not by us, my friend. We pay taxes too. Whatever you do for a living, the Taylor Law is pretty good reading for your lunch hour.
  15. firecapt32 liked a post in a topic by ny10570 in America is not broke
Seriously?? OSHA, PESH, 40hr/5 day work week, holidays, health benefits, retirement plans of all types, and just about every other perk enjoyed by both public and private sector employees is the result of a union victory ultimately at the expense of the consumer and taxpayer. Nothing is free, but at time the cost is worth it. You're young so I'm guessing you haven't been involved in a municipal contract negotiation. A few highlights from the emergency service side. We cannot strike, slow down, or perform any other organized job action without massive penalties thanks to the Taylor Law. The TWA got off fairly lightly for their Taylor Law violation and it nearly crippled their local. As a result we have very little leverage with which to force the city to negotiate with us. Our ace (more like a 9 or 10 card) in the hole is binding arbitration. We explain why we need and deserve a raise while the city argues why we don't deserve the raise or that they cannot afford it. Then a mutually agreed upon panel decides and awards the contract. However to get there the city can delay and stall and generally screw with the employees to its hearts content. For example the 5th man staffing on FDNY's engine Cos. The city claims its not negotiated the union claims it is. While the courts decide wether it falls under binding arbitration the city drops the agreement and along with it the 5th man. If at some point the union wins, they get the 5th man back, but not all of the lost wages. During our last contract negotiation the city dragged its feet for over 2 years after our contract expired. Once the economy went south they came running to the bargaining table knowing that no arbitrator would award us more money with the nations economy heading into the toilet.
The Wisconsin legislation doesn't just end collective bargaining, it effectively cripples the union by ending automatic checkoff, requiring regular union re-certification by the members, and turning the state into a "right to work" state. Kill the unions and small things like a secondary emergency egress that the city is paying $7,000 a week in fines to not provide to an EMS station disappear too. After the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire killed nearly 150 workers it wasn't the city or the businesses that got safety standards implemented and changes made. It was the unions, other industries and professionals stepping up and rallying in support of garment workers to force changes.

This is shameful, but it's what I have come to expect from today's GOP. Politicians like the wimpy, cry baby Rep. John Boehner who have no respect for Cops, Firefighters or the military. He's never placed himself in harm's way to protect his country or another human being. He stood with the GOP when they held The Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Bill hostage while demanding that Democrats join the GOP in extending tax breaks for the wealthiest 2% of Americans. After getting the tax breaks for their wealthy corporate campaign supporters, they subsequently cut the funding for Zadroga in half before passing it. BTW, Rep. John Boehner didn't even stay in Washington to vote on the final bill which occurred on December 22nd, 2010. He along with many other GOP rich kids had already gone home to celebrate Christmas with their families. I wonder what it feels like to walk away from your responsibilities as an elected public servant whenever you feel like it, leaving your work undone. As a Firefighter, I wouldn't know that feeling, nor did I ever have the desire to abandon my responsibilities for my personal enjoyment ... Rep. John Boehner is a disgrace.
Thank you for your service to our country Mr. Buckles ... May you rest in peace ...

I had in my lecture just last night--Intro to Fire officer- a segment about being held to a higher standard. Guys thats just the way people see us, they see the shirt-the hats- the uniform- the fire car--the apparatus. We are in position of trust. We go into peoples homes when they might not be there. Our EMS handles children and the elderly. We have to be carefull. Every day someone is watching us and some of them dont like us. I know its hard to believe but it is true.

JM15-- some departments are way ahead of the curve--some are a little behind the 8 ball--some departments try and are inhibited by elected personel, some departments are inhibited by their own officers and chiefs. The fire world is not like it used to be--you need intelligent capable fire officers with an eye to the future not an eye looking over their shoulder to view the past. Just because you did it one way for 50 years dosent make it right. "Times they are a changing", Laws are there to protect us, elected officials in all towns and villages should be taking note as to what happened in Tarrytown and what is going to happen in Tarrytown.
Bad decisions just might end up in tragic events.
