  1. It's not "returning to quarters" it's a request to return to quarters. As in, the dispatcher asking the or the Co. to 10-2.
  2. Alright, because, when relocated, I've seen that some houses follow the original bell system and some have simplified it.
  3. Are you referring to the bells rung by the house watchmen?
  4. A third day along with a great deal of time spent on BI at The Rock during the academy. As for EMS hating the term "bus", someone from EMS will have to answer, but I hear them refer to, "our bus" almost every time.
  5. I've heard of this being used in New England and down south, but not really in FDNY. You'll hear take a hydrant or hit a hydrant, but you won't hear "plug". There is on longer AFID, it morphed into BI and now, BISP (building inspection safety program). You might hear any one of them on the radio, but the dispatcher will use BISP when announcing the A.M. or P.M. roll call. I've got that right JBE, no?
  6. The city needs no reason to move a company's location. If the job wanted to move 55 Engine in with 20 truck and the division, they would have. I'm sure they'll repair the house and get them back in. How long, well, that's a different story!
  7. Don't worry, slogan's and patches are out. They've moved on from resposne times to EMS runs and even AFID (BISP, as it's been renamed) is not the hot topic it was. Metrotech will have to come up with a new "hot item" for review.
  8. Good in theory. Don't you think this could be pretty difficult logistically? It'd be easier to just hold back on someone with a considerable number of hollow posts than try to nominate everyone.
  9. 4,900 bucks, what a steal!
  10. Definitly not.....A million for two rigs? A decent engine can easily climb to 500k and a heavy rescue is gonna be even more expensive.
  11. Nope, the 5th floor and down is alway hard working, church going individuals.......slender too......
  12. You would be correct.
  13. She is a very nice engine! However..................THE CHEVRONS ARE AWFUL!
  14. I don't think it's a very long wait at all. I think it might be as simple as applying, especially if you're already an EMT. As for moving from EMS to FDNY, that's not always the easiest thing to do. It's doable, but I don't know if your odds are any better than the open competative. Everything is worth at try.
  15. Roof, the 9 bucks is for some city administration desk. They call it a swearing in fee or something like that.
  16. Good luck on Monday guys! Shave clean, wear a suit, bring and extra 9 dollar money order for the dope who forgets. BE EARLY! Shoot for 7am at the latest. You don't want to be one of the guys who gets paraded in front of the rest of the recruits for being late. STAY OFF THE SIDEWALK. They'll tell ya, Concrete and Carpet is off limits. Other than that, stay sharp and listen to what everyone has to say, you'll be just fine. Best of luck and enjoy every minute you can. GOOD LUCK!
  17. I don't believe there is an alternate or overseas test date. That's the reasoning behind extra years for eligibility. They give you more years because you could have been active during a test. As for doing what it takes to get on FDNY, I understand. Good luck!
  18. 6 months is a LOOOOOOOONG time. Get ready to live it day and night. Good luck!
  19. It says a lot that 75% of LODD's are not a result of the emergency itself. Certainly no one who perished this way died in vain, but it seems like these two areas could be worked on fairly easily. One is on driving, the other is completely on the individual. YOU NEED TO STAY IN SHAPE! You're going to go from resting to an adrenaline rush in seconds and that's hard on the heart if you're too sedentary or out of shape. It's just too sad to hear about such high numbers that could be curbed.
  20. The difference between NY Corp and FDNY is less than 100th of an inch. The big curve ball with standpipes is Federal buildings and federally subsidized housing. They do not need to comply with local code and install standpipe with National Standard Thread. Hello adp.....
  21. It is! Take away the positive. A member performed an emergency bail out with a new device that had never yet served it's purpose. Itseems to have worked well and certainly saved him from serious injury and possibly worse. Huge kudos to the members of the P.S.S. team. They work hard training everyone with device.
  22. Penetration, volume, sound pattern.......this is getting way way past the issue. An electronic siren costs 3 or 4 hundred bucks. A "Q" costs 2,000 and that doesn't included the cost of a larger alt. to power it. If you consider that the FDNY has about 380 regular field units (Eng. Truck. Sq. and Res.) the price difference is about $600,000 across the board evey 10 years. When it comes down to it, there isn't a $600,000 difference from one to the other. Some newer rigs have the Elec. Q. It sounds like a yowling cat in heat. It sucks.
  23. As in computer console? They use Panasonic Tough Books.
  24. I think they are sharing property, not the building itself. Either way, it doesn't make too much of a difference as EMS is on the road all day. Also, there are many similar firehouses throughout the city, but they are not obsolete. Many could use a little TLC, but they are great buildings with a lot of history. The trouble with R3, so I hear, is that they have special needs as a SOC Company. They have several rigs and need to store a lot of extra equiptment.
