You cannot bill for F.D. services. It's just that simple. That cost of fire operations is expensive, too expensive to bill on an occurrence by occurrence basis. People pay taxes to have this essential service available to them should they need it, even though most never will.
It's like insurance. The public safety sector is the best and cheapest insurance you can buy. In NYC, Fire/EMS is valued at about $300.00 per person. Not bad. What do you pay in car insurance?

Bad News all the way around. People are reluctant to call the FD as it is. Can you amagine if they were going to get billed for money they don't have. Residents would end up paying with their lives.
Even billing for activated alarms is poor when life safety is involved. Case in point - A Store manager reset the alarm bells with customers inside. He told them "It goes off all the time , just keep shopping " Then he meets the FD at the door still claiming it was a malfuction. It was not - fire in the restroom. Criminal simply criminal.

Sounds kind of retro, billing for fire services. Maybe they should study their history a bit and learn about the fiascos that occured regularly when "Fire Insurance Wall Plaques" determined who might or might stop at your working fire to extinguish it!

Unlike many of the new fire engine photos that grace the pages of emtbravo, this series shows an engine actually pumping at a working fire. We can read a lot into these photos, it's amazing what a rig can reflect about a department if you have some knowledge of that dept.
Good luck brothers of the FDMV!

Its Engine 5, it old but works. You hit the brakes and it stops, it pumps water and that's what we need. The brothers at FDMV would love to have a nice new engine, its not in our future. This just happens to be the third working fire in MV in the past 3 days.

I just said im not a big fan of the small front bumper, never said I didnt like the truck itself, just like the old bumpers better so just chill out. And my bad on the whole Outrigger thing, wasnt exaclty sure what they were specifically called.

Got to the fire after it was knocked down and all victims removed. It was an all hands fire with fire on the 4th floor with people in the windows on the fire floor and floor above. All victims removed via TL-14 and L-26 stick. 4 10-45's 3 code 4 and 1 code 2.

No SOP. We train to clear the whole window and the sash if entering through the window. Some of those windows are not completely taken which I would venture to guess that on the fire floor members were conducting their primary as fast as possible knowing there were confirmed victims.

Question for you, what are the differences in population size over these areas listed? Is that also a factor? Also waht is the population density per squar mile?

In another post this link was mentioned:
    http://www.forbes.com/2010/01/15/property-taxes-high-lifestyle-real-estate-counties-assessment-taxes-chart.html?partner=msnre
Its "Where Americans Pay Most In Property Tax"
They list 20 counties in 4 different sections of the country: North East, South , Midwest and West.
Lets see what can be determined from this little snap shot:
Westchester has more Fire Depts, more water & sewer districts, more school dists, more city town, village and county government more PD,EMS agencies....more, more, more
Does this make us better? or just the most taxed county in the United States!
The 5 West coast counties have 1 FD (SF county/City also) the Median Home Value is almost 50% more, but their tax is almost Half what we pay.
In the South the 3 VA county (with county FD's) Pay half for the same value homes. The 2 Tx counties pay half for a 60-70% less value, but they also have 25-35 FD's and multiple other gov's.
The midwest pays the most after the northeast and they all have 25-35 depts.
The northeast all 5 counties set records for the most government and we pay for it.

"Is disregarding the PUBLIC'S SAFETY the way to save money?" is the real question here.
Emergencies arent consistent, nor predictable, but isn't that the point of having the boxes, "just in case of an emergency"? Hello, McFly- IT'S PUBLIC SAFETY, FOR GAWSH SAKES!
Granted, there are abusers, and maybe the city should discuss how to identify the abuser(s), like take a snapshot and a fingerprint scan when the button's hit, or something, and fine them a hefty sum. Ever heard of "people with disabilities" before? And how about POOR people, who can't afford a cellphone? Even if you have a cell, the signal isn't always there.
Is it really worth the risk of endangering the mass public by removing those boxes to save money? That's scary when people are concerned more with money than the public's safety. I'm sure they can budget or cut things in other areas that doesn't compromise the public's safety!

Nahh I want a fight with City Hall. We've proven they work. The Blackout, Flight 587(first reported alarm was a pull box) and Sept. 11th(ERS Box 8087 came in before the first phone call)
My job is being whittled away by this jerk at City Hall, I feel like lacing up the gloves.

The first unit is on seagrave website as a demo for sale. The unit that we have seen in pictures has been accepted by FDNY with the changes mentioned. With this unit accepted the order will now move with the 2 per month coming in. until contract is done. The cable control issue was with the catails on demo, the new unit has 2 reels one on each side of boom that are used for wiring needed to operate controls and other features of basket. Older towers have 1 reel but with the improvements to design i assume they needed more wires and power to bucket. Hope this helps, also remember the firefighter on the pedestal can always take control of boom/bucket operation via foot pedal at base of unit.

From what I have been told L-138 and L-46 will receive the first 2 TL's when they start coming in, about 2 a month as per shop guys. L-46 has ST9703 as their regular rig now and it is in need of replacement, L-138 is 9702 i think.

Very Nice! I like how the older TL trucks had the bigger front bumper with the outriggers on it, not a big fan of the small bumper on the new ones.

PD Answers the boxes as well as FD. There will be times where you won't get an answer, or you'll get the recording from 911 if the phones are overburdened. I don't know how many they get.

Teachers are taking a big hit too and they were the first to back him. Luckily Bloomy isn't your typical poll.
As bleak as it looks it will not be this severe. All these cuts are based on Patterson's proposed budget. The state legislature and city council still have to weigh in.

And why are you not a fan? 'Cause you don't like the way it looks? I think you need to have a better reason than that. From a practical standpoint, that rig is HUGE for NYC streets and the shorter it is, the better it is to operate. With a long bumper having no operational value, they order a short one and hope to hit less stuff.
General FYI: TL's have "Jacks" on the front bumper and rear quarters. "Outriggers" are the mid-mounted stabilizers.

Well then, I'll be the bucket boy in your corner then! Let's go!
I just can't believe in this day and age politicians want to spend more money on stuff that is not proven to work and not spend half as much to keep a current, up-to-date and proven system that works on line.
Maybe I should run for senate........................

We already do that. We could always start sending you out 24/7. That might also keep some firehouses open.
Even though it ends up being an MFA, it still counts as a run. More runs=keeping companies open.
Here we go again...I'm itching for a fight with City Hall.

Then you run into the risk of someone who is suffering a medical emergency and is unable to talk.
