Wow, useless? That system was developed for FDNY by Scott and adds ZERO weight to the SCBA because its integrated in to the PASS electronics. My bet is that formal training on how to use the system effectively was never implemented correctly. I believe there is a Captain assigned to Tactical Training doing PT training. Maybe a refresher is in order.

From a person who has been in and around the fire service for the 28 Years, I can not think of any reason to do this.
Even if you used webbing to tie off the the end on the ladder, this is NUTS!!!
Come on, This is a NIOSH report waiting to happen.

1/23/05: Black Sunday Fires - Six FDNY firefighters are forced to jump 50 feet from the windows of an illegally partitioned Bronx tenement after being trapped by fire and without working hand lines. Two firefighters succumb to their injuries from the fall and the others suffer career-ending injures. Later the same day, a firefighter becomes trapped on a staircase during search operations in the basement of a Brooklyn private dwelling and dies of smoke inhalation and third-degree burns.
This tragic day is remembered as "Black Sunday."

I will almost guaranty these were purchased with grant money due to the amount of FIRE apparatus destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.
And the feds are not giving the city any warranty on surplus military equipment.

Here is the page from the Scott Manual; these warnings have been around for a long time in regards to the integrated PASS device. The Pak Tracker is incorporated in the main console of the PASS device so obviously the same warnings hold true.
The recommended minimum distance is 6 inches from the main PASS console.
I have not heard of any complaints in regards to PT malfunctions due to RFI but does not mean it cant happen.
My suggestion is to trying training with the radio and see if you have any problems or interference.
The Pak Tracker is a great tool that does not add any additional weight the SCBA but requires a good deal of familiarization and training on the Hand Held Reciever.

They commonly referred to as CCBA (Closed Cirecut Breathing Apparatus) or re-breathers and FDNY uses Draeger BG-4's that can last up to 4 Hours.
Can be used for Haz-Mat, Tunnels, Hi-Rises and incidents that do not involve fire.
