We took the squad bench out of our ambulance spec six years ago. If you have two patients, you use two ambulances.
We now have that workstation design Seth mentioned. All needed items in arms reach. Radio, all controls, 95 % of your equipment.
Way better, and way safer. The patient on the bench was never well restrained and moving them from bench to stretcher was a back injury waiting to happen.

Agree to the minimalist approach. Gloves. Map of town. Pen. Phone. Sometimes my knife. Nothing on my belt.
We have bags for our stuff.
All you folks with the loaded belts...how long you been doing this? Heard once that the amount of stuff on ones's belt was inversely proportional to the amount of experience one has.

I'm not a fan of the flush lights. I agree that you lose light to the sides. Is there science to this? Doubt it. Don't think anyone has done a study on emergency vehicle crashes and location, types and amount of lighting when it relates to the crash.
As for cost being an issue, you pay per light. So if you get a whole row of flush lights AND a lightbar, yes you pay more. A lightbar in and of itself won't cost more. Getting five flush LEDs on the box and no bar. Yup, cheaper. Two box lights and a six or eight LED bar. About the same. I know this because I just sat with the salesman and talked prices and options of lights as we speced a new ambulance.
And maintenance? Where did you come up with that? LED light bars are no more intensive on maintenance than lights.

    Holy he#%! What an ass.
Yes, the Captain. Not the guy filming. He was polite and respectful. There was NO good reason for him to ask the guy to stop filming, or to tell him to leave. It only got worse from there.
Smile and wave, you're a public servant on camera. Act professionally and carry on with your work. If you want, ask for guidance from higher ups about people filming. Pretty sure they'll tell ya to ignore the cameras and go about your work.
Instead, you're now on the news making the fire service look fantastic!

I take a few things away from this article :
    1) New Yorkers have let their lawmakers trample their rights.
    2) Don't drive when your license is suspended.
    3) Don't drive your suspended licensed self around in a car with broken stuff on it.
    4) When breaking two laws, try to avoid interacting with the police.
    5) When breaking laws, don't be carrying a handgun and be shocked when the police ask to hold on to it for a minute.
    6) Here in NY, don't be a test case for the SAFE Act, especially when numbers 2 thru 5 apply to you.
